I expect at least 2 votes overall, so this should be very meaningful. Personally, I think they just get better with every single release. AB had the advantage of being so damn new when first heard. But I vote for Takk, though I love the darkness on the latter half of ().

There's your second vote, Paul. I was ready to claim Takk as their best within a week of having first heard it, but I put it off until I'd listened several more times. But it's undeniable. There is a richness to this album that places it oh-so-slightly above the others. It hits me in a place so deep that I have a hard time coming up with words to desribe it. I still can't listen to "Glossoli" without finding myself on the verge of tears, not of sadness but in awe of the majestic, swirling, climbing, reaching-for sound. Have you seen the video for "Glossoli" yet? WOW. The last 30 seconds of that thing is incredible. I don't doubt that there are many in this hard world who have a low tolerance for Jonsi's child-like (NOT "childish") vocal gymnastics, but as for me it is the sound of an angel and Sigur Ros have worked a sort of alchemy with music, turning sound into palpable beauty. I mean, this is what I want played at my funeral.

I gotta be completely honest...they all sound the same to me. I mean of course not exactly the same but none of them really strike me as being disernably better or worse then any other album.

Well, five votes exceeded expectations eh JAC?. I expected AB to win - shin's "duh" suggests he thinks it's a no-brainer, in fact.
I know I'll never recapture that sense of listening to something new and almost alien that almost overwhelmed me when I first heard AB. But when I revisit that album now I feel that only nostalgia can keep it alongside Takk, though I respect shin's opinion greatly, as ever.
For a long time now people have used phrases like "angels with a record contract" or "God's own in-house band" to describe this group. But surely it's no hyperbole to say that Takk really would be a worthy contender for Heaven's theme music? This is what British churches should be playing during mass to win back a congregation. Takk, after all, is the only compelling bit of evidence for Intelligent Design I ever discovered.
I'm also struck by "Gong" for the first time tonight. This song dallies with the conventional - in length, structure, percussion - and demonstrates that if Sigur Ros had jumped into Radiohead's shoes for the Kid A sessions they'd have likely trumped that masterpiece too. Effortlessly.
In fact, I'm convinced this is the best band I've ever heard, and the best evidence I have for that is the fact that when a Sigur Ros album finishes playing I just can't put anything else in the stereo until I've gone away for literally hours and let the impact fade. That's not a problem I have after playing mortal music.
Yeah JACk, I've seen the video for Glossoli (thanks for posting the link) and it's a wonderful fusion of sound & image, with a haunting climax.
Just as an afterthought: I remember IFTM and Angel had Sigur Ros playing at their wedding - track #3 on (), if I remember. Your funeral comments reminded me, is all.

I respect differing opinions, but I can't even imagine how anyone could rate any of the other 3 albums above Takk...and I love Agaetis Byrjun and ( ) (jury's still out on Von, which just doesn't affect me much). And I have to agree...there's more spirituality in this music than you're liable to find anywhere these days (and that includes my beloved Christian music). I envy you, Paul, that you were able to see that Sigur Ros performance on Jools Holland's show. I checked the website, but no footage (even though there was a nice little interview with the bassist). If you see it anywhere on the web, please send me a link, okay?

I will have Sigur Ros playing at my Viking Funeral. Yes. Viking Funeral. On the Mississippi River, my body burning on a raft in front of Jackson Square with Sigur Ros blaring over the speakers.
