I did buy Postal Service and Plans this year and thought it was very nice, genteel, easy-listening music.......nothing groundbreaking but nothing offensive either!!..........kinda like Al Stewart.......
Maarts, I loved the Church CD's you passed on..just love em...

I'm not too keen on (B)Ryan Adams but I do love Stangers Almanac, and I like Heartbreaker. The rest has not connected with me.

skvor..yeah a lot of your coments echo my sentiments...really, I struggle to see how some of the bands mentioned around here get rated...honestly I'd rather listen to Kaiser Chiefs than some and I fucking hate them....
OK...I don't agree with your White Stripes post...sorry I think yhey are shite...but hey there is a heap of other common ground...
I also struggle to comprehend any list that puts Bloc Party at the top..sorry but you've had a c*#t of a year if that's your highlight...

I don't mind Bloc Party myself, a step up from Franz Ferdinand in my opinion... but not album of the year worthy stuff, I'd have to agree...
Bowiglou, I enjoy Plans by Death Cab and the Give Up by The Postal service for all their mellow drama... I like how for the most part the songs cook along without being too abrasive (I have other bands for that sort of listening) and how good both albums sound late at night, especially the latter half of Plans... it seems like that was made for a late night playing, that album. I think its quite an understated disc!

I think the first Death Cab for Cutie song I ever heard was "Soul Meets Body" the other day and I loved it. Is their most recent album the one to get or an earlier one?

Well, I started at "The Photo Album" which for all intents and purposes was a nice middle ground to fan out from! It had a bit of their earlier sound and the more filled out sound they have moved into lately.
For me though, their strongest to date has been Transatlanticism, which may draw mocking form more hardcore fans, but their earlier albums before The Photo album seem a little amatuerish and not as well developed and interesting.
Plans is a very, very good album and that's where you'll find the single "Where Soul Meets Body". My personal fave is still the album before Plans (Transatlanticism) but Plans really is a slightly more laid back, mellow extension of the sound on the previous album...
You can't go really wrong with Death Cab, in my opinion Weeping!

My favorite album is We Have The Facts And We're Voting Yes. No, it's not as polished as the last couple but it's certainly not "amatuerish".

The way it goes is that some people know what the best music is while the others do not ... !! Never mind that different people have different tastes ... ! !

You can't go really wrong with Death Cab, in my opinion Weeping! A co-worker just in the past month turned me on to all of DCfC's discs, setting me up with "Plans" and "We Have The Facts..." first. Was totally won over by "Plans" (which is good to chill on) but have to agree that when I later got "Transatlanticism" it stuck some equal high points. Your final statement there Scottsy rings VERY well -- I will also vouch for the debut as I liked for its slightly rawer edge as much as I liked "Plans" for its sheen...

Yeah Mantis, my choice of the word "amatuerish" was a bad one, I re - read that post and saw how it could be interpreted as a put down to those early albums... I meant more raw, less polished... and I love those albums probably as much as you do. :-) :-)
I didn't mean to put 'em down in any way shape or form, but I guess when you write posts at 1am in the morning, your phrasing goes to pot...hahahahahaha.

exactly: "raw" is a distance from being nailed as "amatuerish"!
