'Don't whine'? Fuck that shit....
Labels of rock and jazz are rendered superfluous with guys like Wooten and Pastorius. And to say they don't count is simply arbitrarily saying 'No. It's my poll and maybe my definition of 'rock' is really fucking narrow, but it's my poll. Sit fucking down'
Of COURSE they played rock. Shit.
And Holzman's comments there ripping on Mitchell and Redding were crap as well. AI!

My point wasn't really so much to stop whining, it was that Wooten's absence from the poll did not prove that no one here knew what they were talking about. He was acknowledged. Just doesn't fit into the laid out rules of this poll.

I was going to vote for Ox, but decided to change it up a bit and go with Watt. Saw him live several years back and he was stupendous. And he looks like a lumberjack.

I voted for Entwistle. Paul would get my second choice.
Ken, read your comments on Jimi....I think you should give the Billy Cox/Mitch Mitchell line up a go. Cox (from the Band of Gypsies) was much more of a groove bassist than Noel Redding (from the Experience), and Mitchell's styly really compliments Hendrix. Hendrix would just go off sometimes, and Mitch would be right there with him, while Cox would hold the fort down. The first three proper Hendrix albums (Are You Experienced, Axis, Electric Ladyland) all feature the Redding/Mitchell line up. Most of the Billy Cox/Mitch Mitchell line up can be found on recordings from 1969 and 1970 (many live recordings, South Saturn Delta, First Rays of the New Rising Sun).
Oh, and while Jimi may not be the best lyricist (that would be Mr. Ray Davies), that's not what is was really about...It's all about the vibe w/ Jimi...kinda like what you said, he speaks through his guitar.

The first three proper Hendrix albums ...
Those would be the ONLY "three proper Hendrix albums" the guy would release before his untimely death ... !!
And Paul's right about the role of Mitchell and Redding in the Jimi Hendrix Experience ...
It was more of a vehicule for Jimi's guitar playing than an actual band like Cream was !
Check out the Live at the BBC set for a great feel on how those three guys fit together ...

Wow, I can't believe Mike Watt is tied for the lead. This is awesome. Good thing I didn't put any muppets in this poll or it would have screwed everything up.

I HATE the man, the legend, and quite frankly, I'm glad I don't have to be subjected that baffoon's ego stroking non-sense. He's no Charles Mingues and he isn't fit to stick my drum-stick up his ass. I do agree with you on Wooten even though we're not suppose to mention these dudes. Sorry, Rocky.

Check out the Live at the BBC set for a great feel on how those three guys fit together ... On the rare occasion I get the urge to listen to Hendrix it's either those BBC discs or The Blues....The BBC discs if I'm in the mood for the over the top trainwreck of the Experience or The Blues if I'm in the mood Jimi's groovier fake special brand of blues.

Pastorius is the Yngwie of Jazz bass...but since it's jazz it's excusable for some reason, and though I have no doubt he could play rock as he could play anything, he is not a rock bassist.

Joe Lally (sp?) from Fugazi is a pretty damn good bassist as well -- thought he deserved an honorable mention....
Oh, and I mentioned Billy Cox in my early post -- he's pretty bad ass too.
