Hey Phil, you ever listen to the Pine Leaf Boys? Some young guys who pretty much run the zydeco scene down here now (and, well, this IS the zydeco scene.) I've never heard their albums, but I see them live all over town, and they're pretty top notch. Here's the Amazon links, assuming you haven't heard them... www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&keywords=Pine)Leaf%20Boys&index=music&page=1

This has been such a good year for music in most of the genres that I think I'm going to not worry about making a list this year. Too much good stuff that I haven't even caught up on yet.

jllm - finally bought the new iliketrains. perfect time of year for it, especially for my return to portland today, land of sog and zombies. thanks for the rec! Cool. It arguably doesn't have as many high spots as the Progress-Reform album - it's certainly not as immediate, anyway, as songs like "Terra Nova", "Stainless Steel" or "A Rook House For Bobby" - but I think it works together really well. They're fairly unique in many ways; I saw them live recently and they're one of the best live acts in the UK, while the visuals add a certain poignancy to the songs, so be sure to see them when they tour near you.

They have this shoegaze almost somewhat modern approach to the Joy Division thing going on that I find awesome. I rebought their new album and I finally get it. It's the sound of new 4AD to me, which I think is awesome. It is definitely a grower and I would kill to see them live.

I know alot of people here seem to love them, but i cn't get into anything by thre Kings of Leon... I have no pluasible reason for this other than it just leaves me feeling "blah", whatever.
Some damn nice picks for best albums of 2007 here, though...

btw skvor and maarts and whoever else mentioned it, i'm sad to say i can't really get into the new angels of light album I like Angels Of Light but not as much as I like Swans and I guess that's where my problem lies with it. I'm so keen to hear Michael Gira's baritone rumble and he now seens to throw his voice around a bit more, it's almost unrecogniseable. I played the new Angels Of Light a few times, then I put Swans' White Light From The Mouth Of Eternity on and the latter blows the first one completely out of the water. Tough to recover from that litmus-test. My three for this year look set to be: 1. Working For a Nuclear Free City- Businessmen & Ghosts 2. Songs Of Green Pheasant- Gyllyng Street 3. Panda Bear- Person Pitch

Definitely, as a fan of both Joy Division and Black Heart Procession, as well as a having a soft spot for post-rock leanings (where has that old punk grrrl gone eh? ) you should just buy both of their CDs. Otherwise you're asking me to choose between my 3rd best album of '06 and probably my number 3 pick in '07 too. Progress-Reform was their first long-player. It's seven tracks - basically 4 of their 5 early singles and 3 B-sides. As you'd expect from that description, the quality is uneven. Those A-sides were killer tracks though. If you can pick up the Canadian version of the album you get 8 tracks instead, with the missing single stuck on the end. Alternatively you could pick up the debut studio album Elegies to Lessons Learnt, which hangs together more cohesively but is less commercial. You have to love an album that starts with a 6 minute dirge about the plague wiping out half of Derbyshire, goes through the great fire of London, covers the assassination of the British Prime Minister Spencer Perceval (their best song bar none, incidentally), takes a quick look at the Salem witch trials, the suicide of a defector from East Berlin who crossed checkpoint charlie but couldn't live with the guilt, the suicide of a religious man who cheated at a round the globe yacht race, and just death in general. You're not going to hear any party classics to be honest.

I think I might like the new Angels of Light more for the Akron/Family jams on that CD than Gira. Still, I'm digging it a lot.
I picked up that new Grizzly Bear "Friend" EP and man is that SOOOOO good.
