I don't think Aruba can handle the loss of Birmingham's steady tourism influx. That's like 30% of their economy right there.

Oh, but they're going for a national thing. But I think the Aruban authorities are doing what they can. Their legal system is different from ours, but not that different. What should they do, torture a confession out of the suspects?

It blows my mind that people would "boycott Aruba" over this. What a bunch of morons. That's worse than the people around here with the "Boycott France" stickers. It's like, "Dude...this is fucking SOUTH LOUISIANA. The street signs are all written in French. The cities are all named after Frenchmen. Get that redneck trash off your car, you ignorant coonass." I use words like "whore" almost figuratively, I guess. I don't know the girl, but I do think that the obvious assumption is that she was going to get fucked or do some drugs. Howcan you assume that? That's like me looking at your wedding photo you posted and assuming you will end up in divorce because the wife looks like she has been rode hard and put away wet. You are the most vile idiot since Pissin, what is wrong with you assholes?

Wow thats some kind of Judgement you make there Luke.... Damn I am glad that nothing horrible happened to Mary on her trip to Europe.

How can you NOT assume that!? I was just 18, I was just on senior trip, I know how that shit works. It's plainly fucking obvious, and it's not THAT big of an assumption. It's the way the world works, and that's usually why shit like this happens.

Yes living dangerously is not good Luke, but you can't be sure that this was the case. You can't pass the judgement that she was "out to do" anything. And if she was out to party and have a good time, she surely should not take the blame for what happened to her.

No she shouldn't take all the blame but she should shoulder more of then Aruba as a whole. She's the one that got in a car in a foreign country with a bunch guys she didn't know...I'm not sure how you could NOT assume that drugs or sex was or would somehow be invovled. It's tragic that she got killed but it doesn't make her any less of a dumbshit.

I never said that she's entirely to blame. Just that she was completely lacking the most basic common sense regarding her situation. Saying she's to blame is like blaming someone walking down a dark alley in a strange city at 3:00am for getting mugged. Responsible? No she's not. Did she deserve it? No, she didn't. She was just really fucking stupid about it.
As for "being sure," of course I'm not entirely sure, but it's a very strong assumption. My post was part tongue-in-cheek, and I can understand if you didn't catch that, having not been reading my posts for the past seven years. But really, I've not much respect for the girl, and think it's a case of stupid things happening to stupid people. My post was mainly an attack on putting that drivel and stories like it on our television over real or even mildly significant news. This thread could just as easily be titled, "Who the fuck is Robert Blake?" or "I really don't care that those little kids got kidnapped".

I think placing some of the blame on her is a great way of using an honest-to-God real life situation to prove to kids that when their parents tell them not to get into a car with strangers, they fucking mean it. If you don't place some of the blame on her for her stupid behavior, and excuse it all together, then that message is lost.
"Hey kids, if you're stupid, and do things that you know are stupid, then bad things can happen to you. See, look what happened to her." That's much more affective than making into the Aruban government's fault.
Unfortunately the reason that this story has been all over the news is not to teach anyone any lessons. The reason she's in the news is...well, I have no idea why she's in the news.

I don't even know who Natalee Holloway is. The benefits of never watching TV I guess....
However if she climbed into a car in the middle of spring beak in Aruba with a bunch of strangers, she probably was looking for something beyond a cup of tea and a pleasant conversation about the local weather. Why is that such an appalling assumption?
"stupid whore" - no, just typical college (high school?) kid on spring break. But, I don't take too much offense to luke's post, cause I know for him "stupid whore" and "typical college kid on spring break" are basically interchangeble descriptive terms. Ordinarily I'd also object to the misogynistic overtones of the slight, except once again, I think ekul would just as readily refer to a dude as a stupid whore.
And amp, maybe you should consider that the proper way to call someone out for being tasteless and obnoxious is not to make every effort to be even more tasteless and obnoxious than they are. I thought what you wrote about luke's wife was probably the most jaw-droppingly inappropriate and disgusting thing I've ever seen on these boards, so it makes it a bit hard to take seriously your offense at luke's own post.
And I think that mrs. ekul is beautiful.

Well I just looked up Miss Natalee Holloway to see what the deal is, and now I get it:
She's white, blonde, and looks all-American.
That's why she's all over the news. This ain't rocket science.
and btw.... whether or not she's an idiot, a "whore", a pretty blonde chick from alabama - whatever - it's still obviously tragic and I still feel for her parents and her family and her friends. I don't mean to be dismissive of that. But I do take luke's point that terrible tragedies which are analagous to this one happen all the time, right here in america, and receive no coverage whatsoever. That's all.

...one more thing....
must every story about her refer to her as the "honors" student from alabama?
what, would the story be less tragic if she was a high school dropout? a C student?
what difference does it make that she was an honors student?
and when are people gong to stop being shocked that kids who get good grades in school can ALSO be reckless teenagers, just like the rest of their classmates?
jeesh.

Mary, you forgot one componet of the story ... it happened at the start of the Summer, right after the runaway bride adventure. The media started out looking at it as the runaway bride 2, and then it carried over it to that vaccum time where they have no big news going on - or think they don't (God forbid we talk about a Supreme Court nominee, a war, or Israel's pull out from the Gaza Strip during the Summer time!!!!!). And the fact that a bunch of producers and reporters could spend the entire Summer on the beaches of Aruba doesn't hurt either.
Regarding Amp's comments ... my jaw dropped too. Left a dent in my floor I think. But I think ... or at least I hope ... that he was not saying that HE thought that of Mrs Ekul, but that if someone did, it would be the equivilent of calling Natalee Holloway a whore based on this story. Point being, this shows us one tidbit of her life, not the whole thing.
I don't disagree that what she did was stupid, and put her in danger. I agree with Rocky that this can and should be used to tell kids that parents aren't just exaggerating when they tell them to be careful. No question about it - she could have done a lot more to keep herself safe. Hell, any friends she was with who said "Okay, Natalee met some boys, so we can leave her with them" were quite stupid too. But isn't there a HUGE gap between stupid and whore on the word spectrum?
I guess I've just grown a bit tired of the way that words are so often thrown around carelessly on this forum. People say something, they're called on it, and say "Well that's not what I really meant". We don't have anything other than the words we choose around here. No voice inflection, no facial expressions. Luke, I realize that you mentioned your posting style overall. But remember, we don't all frequent every board. I can think of quite a few posters around here who'd really only be known by a few select boards probably not frequented by the masses. When you've got nothing but a written format, the words chosen do matter.
