Damn I am glad that nothing horrible happened to Mary on her trip to Europe. Ummmm, I didn't get into any cars full of strangers.... And i've been to Europe 4 times, and I'm 27. I'm not really sure what the comparison is, then. The comparison was this: As Luke's Judgement went, a girl/woman goes to another country and gets killed by "greasy strangers". It could have just as easily happened in a nightclub full of "greasy strangers", or in the parking lot walking out of a nightclub full of "greasy strangers". Age has really nothing to do with it, nor does it matter if you have been to an area once, 4 times, or everyday! It CAN happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere. And we don't know all of the facts so you can't really judge it. What if these people weren't complete strangers and she had met one of them when she first got there? Thats if they did indeed kill her. As for the Mother, I would guess right now she is pretty damn stressed out and wants to find her daughter. And no matter if Natalie was a "stupid whore" or not she is STILL her daughter. As for the news coverage, the choice is yours whether or not you watch it or not. Thats what the remote is for.

Also, I suspect that a Judge's son would not exactly be a greasy stranger......and might have been the reason she "trusted" the situation.

ChrisFan, I realize that the words I throw around and stuff do offend a lot of posters, which is why I'd never play e-victim around here. It's the way I've been doing things around here for years and years, though, so I'm used to it all.
Tuatha, Rocky had an excellent point in that this should be a lesson about "dealing with strangers." And yeah, so far, everything about the story points toward "they were strangers." And while some girl getting in a local night club full of strange dudes in a club may not be QUITE as dumb, it's still pretty moronic. This whole story just reeks of a lack of common sense on some jackass high school kids' parts.
As for the remote thing, as I explained, it's impossible not to catch this stuff channel surfing. Nine times out of ten, I change the channel, but when you flip through the channels a hundred times a day, you're still going to catch this stuff ten times.
Also, Chrisfan, thank you for reminding me of the runaway bride! I couldn't for the life of me remember what the other jackass useless human sympathy story all over the news was.
I think it's pathetic that news stoops so low for ratings (and to save some money by not having to do any investigative reporting.) The news is SUPPOSED to be boring, people. You're supposed to have to MAKE yourself interested in the goings-on of government and world affairs, not because you really want to, but because it's the responsible thing to do.

Also- Shin's avatar thingy made me think of this- the only thing that every really hit my interest in this case was on my way to Playa Del Carmen from Cancun. We caught a ride with this Cuban lady, who was telling us about what a stupid thing Holloway had done, and how it defied all common sense. That was the first time I really thought about any of this in detail.
Oh, and Shin's avatar made me think of that because she also saw some big billboard with Che on it, and started bitching about how she hated his guts and how it's "his fault that I don't have a country!" Then we got into a conversation on RatM and Che chic, but that's a whole other topic.

Some have said she thought she was getting into a cab - don't know if that's true or not.
I guess for the other side of the coin, there's the kid who was lost in the mountains for days a while back who was hiding from the search/rescuers because his parents warned him about "stranger danger."
We all make judgement calls - some calls are better than others. There's a lot of nastiness out there. I guess you could say, "There but for the grace of God go I." (Or if you're an atheist, "l'm glad the odds are against something like that happening to me."
But the "news" is definitely about sensationalism today.

On the turning the channel thing ... it's easy to do to a degree. But the annoying thing to me is that all these news shows that are SUPPOSED to be covering politics are covering this instead. So the shows I'd WANT to be watching aren't there for me to change the channel to.

Chris, one big problem with television in general is that you have hundreds of channels that are supposed to be covering every spectrum- news, food, comedy, science fiction, music, travel, you name it- yet they are trying to target the exact same target audience. It's ridiculous.

Its no big deal Luke, it just seemed like you jumped the gun a bit. But if that is your "normal" tone then thats fine. I have to wonder though, apparently this kid, whos daddy is a lawyer and judge in training, was really well known in this bar and was known to flaunt his family status and what not....well I am guessing this is why she trusted him. I mean everyone in the bar knew him (from what I have read) and he was a regular gambling customer there. So yeah I would imagine she had no clue what was in store for her and probably figured he was pretty safe. Actually if you go to the website they have set up you will see that Natalie had indeed traveled out of the country on her own before, visiting Europe and Canada and was no "dumb blonde". She had a full scholarship and was about to be a pre med student and was involved in all kinds of things at school and in the church. So I highly doubt this was a case of 'stupid whore out to get drunk and fucked' . Thats just my opinion though.
From the website:
HOLLOWAY, Natalee Ann…. AMERICAN. Missing in ARUBA since 5-30. NATALEE is 18 years old (born October 21, 1986). She is 5’ 5” tall, 105 pounds. Athletic build. Medium complexion. Long blonde hair, below-the-shoulder length. Last seen 5-30-05 wearing a denim thigh-length skirt, brown flip-flops, and a halter top with a white background imprinted with green and teal designs of stripes and hearts. Distinguishing marks: Scar between her shoulder and shoulder blade; Large brown freckle that can be seen from afar on her right arm. NATALEE had 3 roommates in her ground floor room in the ARUBA, Palm Beach, “Holiday Inn Sunspree Aruba Resort and Excelsior Casino.” Last seen within two groups totaling 40 classmates on 5-30 at 1:00 am outside of the Oranjestad bar “Carlos N‘ Charlies" getting into a car owned and being driven by Current Suspect D. KALPOE, Current Suspect S. KALPOE was in the passenger seat, and NATALEE was sitting in the back left seat with Main Suspect J. SLOOT in the right rear seat. Main Suspect J. SLOOT has admitted that he was, supposedly, the very last known person with NATALEE.
NATALEE previously has made a profession of faith and was baptized in her church in Birmingham. She is active in the Bible Club at her school. NATALEE works part-time at the natural foods store, “Harvest Glen Market,” in Crestline Village. NATALEE is active in the “Dorians,” her high school's dance squad. Participates in her classmate government, “Future Business Leaders of America,” the Spanish Club, and the Spanish honor society. She is a Nation Honors Society high school graduate (with a 4.15 grade point average)(she graduated 25th in her class--a VERY competitive class with a 3.875 aggregate GPA). NATALEE has received a fully-paid academic scholarship to the University of Alabama starting Fall, 2005. For her 2005 yearbook NATALEE chose to quote from Lynyrd Skynyrd’s classic song, “Freebird” which reads “If I leave her tomorrow, would you still remember me? For I must be traveling on now, There’s too many places I haven’t seen.” She decided to enter the field of pre-medicine studies offered her by the university‘s 8-year, full-ride “Early Acceptance to the School of Medicine” (EASOM) program. NATALEE and her mother BETH HOLLOWAY-TWITTY are extremely close "buddies." Natalee is sometimes called "Hootie" by friends, and BETH at times took the moniker, "Big Hootie." BETH took the summer of 2005 off of work to help Natalee get ready to go to college. NATALEE works with physically and mentally challenged people. She has never run away, anytime. As far as her parents and friends who have commented know, NATALEE has never ingested any illegal drug. BETH said that NATALEE had been planning for the ARUBA trip since February 2005, and that NATALEE had earned the trust of her parents to take several trips out of the UNITED STATES to the CARIBBEAN OCEAN (what island(s)? Costa Rica cruise?), Canada, Austria, and Germany on her own.

See, the stuff that tries to portray her as a saint really bothers me. Two of the biggest party junkies I know graduated with honors from Tulane and are going into the surgical field. And what are her friends going to say? "Yeah, we did drugs." Nah...
I'll admit that I don't know the nit and gritty of this whole situation, but, in the context of the way the story has been presented by the media, I think it's completely defensible to bash this story on its surface alone.
And yeah, as Mary pointed out, she's a rich blonde girl from Alabama. Great follow-up to the runaway bride.

Oh yea, and who the fuck is so sick of something on the news they start a thread on a board about it to discuss even further? That makes sense, not.

Okay...strat-0 asked me to hang around, and even though I kinda wanted to move along, I just can't ignore stuff like this... Good God, amp...you're not still calling yourself a Christian, are you? If so I really don't see how you can reconcile such hateful commentary with even the most permissable Christian attitude... If not, well I'm sorry you've backslidden. Hope you'll come back to the faith in time. At any rate, your attack on luke is sickening and uncalled for. Are posts still getting deleted for not being topic-related? If so, it's a shame, cuz what I've just said is something that NEEDS to be said. Topic-related or not. I guess we'll find out...

Well I knew Luke did drugs because I saw a post about some hash a couple days ago. But I didn't know about the cucumbers.
Is this the part that bothers you Jac? Or is it the rest of the post that bothers you? Because if it is this part, and it is true, I can't say its not Christian of Ampage to talk about it. I mean I am assuming that its true and has been talked about before.
As for the rest of the post, well.....I am assuming that ampage was pretty put off by the whole "stupid whore" thing and is just being honest. Dunno...

Exactamondo - I am a Christian, doesn't mean I am perfect (you know that yourself Jac). The very thougt of creating a thread titled this is sickening, period. The End I dont know if he just wants the attention or what, but who complains about the TV having nothing but this on it and then he starts a thread about it. Not to even go into how insensitive it is. Obviously he doesnt know anybody who has has been murdered. He is an idiot punk.
