I think everyone would agree that it's tragic - I think Luke has even said as much. It seems like there's something about the case that you really relate to, Amp, perhaps even personally in some way, and that's fine. People always rip on strangers in the news! I mean, even things as mild as you might get from Leno can be pretty cruel and cause a lot of grief to people who are personally affected. I don't know, man.

You are the one who doesn't get it. Riff on luke all you want - he's fair game.

Personally, I was appalled by the fact that you thought luke's WIFE was fair game, and that's why I posted.

I'd love to know how referring to a woman you've never met as looking like she was "rode hard and put away wet" really served the purpose of showing luke how inappropriate it is to speak tastelessly and insensitively about a woman he's never met.

Now, regarding the actual content of the discussion - I'm the one who brought up the fact that natalee holloway was white (i never said she was rich, i have no idea if she's rich or not!) - and pretty and all-american-looking and blonde- i believe that was the whole phrase.

But if you really thought I mentioned all that to show that she "deserved" her fate, then you misread me completely and made me out to be a pretty horrible human being. I was speculating as to why there has been such a media hurricane around this story, and why it has attracted so much attention and concern from so many people who AREN'T natalee's parents (who, obviously and of course, have every reason to be grief-stricken and 100% devoted to their daughter's case).

And I think natalee's appearance has a lot to do with it. I'm not saying it's something conscious, like people see her picture and think "oh my goodness, it's so horrible that someone so WHITE and PRETTY got kidnapped, it's so wrong to kidnap WHITE and PRETTY girls" - I'm sure it's much more subconscious than this. The question remains - why soooooooo much attention for this case, as compared to the numerous other tragedies which befall young and innocent victims all the time? It's a fair question to ask, not because I want to attack natalee holloway or diminish the tragedy of her disappearance and probable death, but because it bears on media coverage in general, a perfectly fair topic to ponder in terms of race, class, beauty, etc etc.

Incidentlly, I appreciated strat-o's "there but for the grace of god" post - and I agree. Getting into that car was probably pretty fucking stupid, but the vast majority of us have done pretty fucking stupid shit in our lives, with no consequences. Usually, when you do someting stupid, you don't end up dead - otherwise a lot fewer of us would still be posting here. I am not judging natalee holloway - I do think it's likely she got into that car for drugs or sex (I have no way of knowing for sure, I'm only speculating, based on what I know of 18 year olds on vacation in places like aruba) but even if so, i still wouldn't judge her for it. Doesn't mean I can't point out the naivete of those who are utterly shocked by the suggestion that miss holloway might have been something less than pure, or those who list her GPA and scholarships as evidence that she didn't get high or have sex. Of course - maybe she didn't - she's a stranger so who knows for sure? But the circumstances make it likely enough that it's silly to act horrified by the mere suggestion.
