Some things aren't worth the trouble of debate. There is such a thing as something being TOO dumb.
But I agree with maarts on principle.

Actually Ken, I think part of the problem is when we decide to take it upon our selves to deicde what is "too dumb". For instance, doc, has mostly decided we're too stupid to be taken seriously which is ok becuase we've pretty much decided the same thing about him. We're shutting down our tolerence levels. Our opinions of what's too dumb to debate is getting smaller and smaller.

See but dude, there comes a point where you have to call a spade a spade. I am fine with raising my tolerance levels and certainly would expect the same from Doc, but I don't know how much more I could have put up with Melon's posts (I mean this in earnest, not as an insult).

I'm not really saying we should be nicer to each other....I thought that would help but it doesn't really, I'm saying we should extend the period before we shut other people off. We shut people off when we stop debating the topic or ignore the person. Now I agree, I have no idea how to debate with Melon, his veiws are based in faith and not logic...I don't think you can really debate someone like that. This board has never been about agreeing, it doesn't matter if you agree. It's about an exchange of ideas...and then the name calling. It just seems lately we've gone straight to the name calling. You're not going to agree with chrisfan, she's not going to agree with you. If after realising that you still see a point in coming here fantastic, let's start there. I come here becuase I like getting other views and I like being shown the holes in my view and I like argueing and making fun of poilitics...actually that would be in the reverse order. Anyway, whatever I don't really expect it to change much around here.

I agree with you. Business as usual. If there is anything we can get out of this, it's basically point 4: everyone contributes to the hostility in this place, and we should stop playing the blame game as far as that goes.

Truth of the matter is, there are not enough people posting here now to sustain any kind of meaningful discussion (if there was ever such a thing) and it now sounds like a broken record where every subject quickly degenerate into lame arguments, personal attacks and one-line jokes...
People have been either jumping out of our little Medusa Raft or pushed over the side for quite some time now...
HÉ ! As long as the music boards stay up and running it's all that really matters to me !!

I'll throw something else in the mix- the lack of subject matter that everyone can discuss.
I don't know much nor do I care terribly about the fine ins and outs of politics in America- granted, the majority of you do and that is cool. I try to read as much as I can (want to). It's just that a lot of posts are so detailed and specific that me as a non-American can't make heads or tales of it without Google.... I had been mulling the idea of setting up an International Events-board but I fear that will not attract many posters.

I think that's why I have opted out of this area in general, I have a vague and broad following of American politics, and i will say that my interest and following of it will probably increase when I move there in a couple of months... but quite often this area of the boards just leaves me scratching my head, trying to join dots and work out what people are talking about... in the same way that if someone walked into a political conversation about Australia in Kats Timezone some people would be pretty confused...
I guess politics, even in this world of internetted computers and better communications technology, is still very firmly rooted in regional interests!!!
I'm looking forward to understanding better what all these discussions are about when I am exposed to the American media though... I'll finally be able to follow most of what gets discussed here.... hahahahahahaha!!!

American politics is bullshit. That's why it seems we rarely discuss politics, and (again, when the board is functioning) spend most of the time debating the philosophical underpinnings of the right or left.
But again, that's when the board is running as it should.

Hey, Phil, why all the gloom and doom? How many does it take to have a "meaningful discussion" for you? Perhaps several people are off doing other things at the moment, or there's just not anything going on that anybody wants to comment about right now... If a few people want to try to hammer out a reasonable protocol for their participation in discussions around here, I think it's a noble idea. It seems like some actual communication taking place again.
Actually just had a new member approved today, btw.
