From the ED Sun
A question of honour Klein bucks Harper, will lower flags for funerals of fallen Alberta soldiers
Alberta will lower flags on all provincial buildings on the days of funerals for soldiers born or based in Alberta.
Premier Ralph Klein said his caucus will honour Alberta soldiers killed in the line of duty, even if the federal government will not.
"It's our way of honouring the men and women who are killed while serving in Afghanistan or other areas," Klein told reporters yesterday.
Klein said his "gut feeling" tells him that's what Albertans would want and he's not worried about undermining Ottawa.
"From what I understand, we're not the only province to do this," he said. Klein said that when he saw the flags at the Legislature at half-mast Saturday he thought they had been lowered to honour the soldiers killed on the weekend, but later discovered the flags had been dropped to honour two deceased former MLAs.
MLA Thomas Lukaszuk, whose north Edmonton riding is home to the families of many soldiers, raised the issue yesterday. "Sometimes we have to step up for what's right. In my opinion, lowering the flag would be right."
He's not alone. The father of one of the soldiers killed Saturday in Kandahar has asked Prime Minister Stephen Harper to lower flags to honour the bombing victims.
Lincoln Dinning wrote to the PM and Liberal MP Paul Steckle earlier this month, asking that each soldier who dies in Afghanistan be honoured by flags being lowered on federal buildings.
The Liberals plan to use Dinning's letter to hammer the Conservatives over their policy against lowering the flags to mark the deaths of Canadian soldiers abroad.
Opposition leader Bill Graham urged Harper to rethink the policy shift, adding it sends the wrong message to Canadians and to the troops.
"I think there is a concern that it will be perceived by the troops themselves as a lack of respect for the sacrifice they're making," Graham said.
NDP Leader Jack Layton said his party supports lowering flags to honour fallen soldiers as a show of respect.
Cpl. Matthew Dinning, Bombardier Myles Mansell, Lieut. William Turner and Cpl. Randy Payne were killed early Saturday when their Mercedes G-Wagon was hit by an improvised explosive device about 75 km north of Kandahar.
The Royal Canadian Legion issued a statement yesterday supporting the Conservative government's decision not to lower the flag on Canadian buildings, adding the selective application of the policy does more harm than good.
"The Legion considers the lowering of the flags on the Peace Tower and all government buildings ... to be discriminatory," the statement says, pointing out that not all soldiers who died on active duty have received the same honour.
Where they are fucking up with that statement is there is a difference between active duty & a theater of combat operations.

Wow how’s this for ignorant…………….. I received a curt e mail back from the Montreal Gazette telling me I need to learn how to spell before I send letters. Seems I spelt it Steven Harper instead of Stephan. Oh whoop they ever hear of editing? I don’t think it deserved a reply telling me & I quote “For what it’s worth you should learn to spell the prime ministers name” And they wonder why people bad mouth Québec.

If that's a direct and perfect quote, they need to learn singular possessive and add an apostrophe to ministers.

Must be the french translation do ya think I actually think it probably went like this 75% my letter was in English (how dare I) 25% some one very very immature working that paper. I must admit I’m PISSED. Totally unnecessary if you don’t want to print it then don’t but that was uncalled for.

A suggestion, for what it's worth: learn how to spell the prime ministers name before sending letters. Sincerely, Gaz letters

LOL on that response, rockkid. Perhaps you should write them....
From tonklingulf@yahoo.com to letters@thegazette.canwest.com re: spelling
Am I to understand that I have to take a comment in regards to 'spelling of the premier's name' serious coming from a person who cannot write out their own name in full?'

The Montréal Gazette used to be my favorite newspaper until CANWEST bought it a few years ago ... CanWest as in Can West Global Communication corp. which also own the National Post and the Global TV network ... The Montréal Gazette may still report news from Québec but it takes its editorial orders from out West ... If I was you, I'd take this matter higher up in the chain of command BTW ... That was very rude of them ... !!

And they wonder why people bad mouth Québec.
In that case, you could have specified Anglo.Quebec ... Because I'm still perplexed on how a stupid response from an anglophone newspaper in Montréal owned by a Westerner can serve as another excuse to "break sugar on the back of ALL Quebecers" ...

So they've finaly settled the Softwood Lumber dispute between the U.S. and Canada ...
Looks like a political decision to me and we got shafted big time ...
Or as we like to say in Québec, "On s'est fait passer un sapin" !!
Proof once again that the U.S. is all for Free Trade as long as they're the ones cashing in ... !!
