Amp - I'm surprised at you! It's got Clive Owen and Jude Law - what's not to like?! Man, I'm on the other ball team and Natalie Portman and . . .was the other one Julia Roberts-? -- well they're certainly an eyefull; I actually want to see this one, eventually: all 4 actors are cool

In an effort to get out of the house and curb a nasty sinus attack, my mom and I saw Robots Saturday at the local $2 theater. The film looked and sounded fantastic (with a little too much attention to detail) and had some decent voice work (especially from Robin Williams) and a lot of in-jokes and gags. I noticed film references to Star Wars, The Wizard of Oz, Minority Report, The Matrix Reloaded, Braveheart.
But, like previous Dreamworks Animation efforts (Shrek 2, Antz and Shark Tale) it has nothing on anything produced by Pixar in the realm of creative storytelling, memorable characters or inventive dialogue.
One problem is that the voice work by other actors is very generic or too straightforward compared to efforts by Williams, Greg Kinnear and Jim Broadbent. Another mishap is applying the film's theme (follow your dreams) ad nauseum. Add to this list that the entire town -including its transit system - act as Rube Goldberg-inspired contraptions.
But the biggest fuck-up may be the old safeguard in lame family films these days: farting (robots can do it, apparently). I'm serious. Its as tired a plot device as car chases, Mexican standoffs or Talking Villians, to name a few. Grow the hell up, Dreamworks.

I've been wonderin' about ROBOTS. A preview I caught at the multiplex the other day kinda sparked my interest in it a tad more than I previously had: which was "zero", for some reason. (I'm a huge science fiction fanatic if that much isn't already obvious) so I might just catch it at the dollar theater, eventually.
Instead, I will merely indicate you to the "Latest DVD Purchases" board for a robot movie far deeper up my alley . . .

"Ghost In The Shell: Innocence" is one of the most thoughtfully made films on artificial intelligence I've seen. There was quite a lot of foresight put into this futurist vision. Highly recommended for serious fans of AI and robotics.

Well I think I'm the last person to finally see Sin City. What a great movie. I don't want to keep beating a dead horse but GO SEE THIS MOVIE.
Thorn, you were saying how you were surprised there was no profanity. Did you ever pick up on any seeing it again? I was actually thinking about it when I got home from seeing it last night. It just popped in my head, all the violence and all, then I thought Hey they didn't really curse in it did they? Unless I'm desensitized to it as well, I don't know. If they did, it couldn't have been that much, and that's a pretty cool thing. Elijah Wood was creepy as hell man.

He’s always creepy as hell IMO. It’s those bulging eyes.

yeah, but in this he had shades on.
Possible spoiler to some: Also thought it was interesting how he just sits there, unalarmed when Hartigan goes after the Yellow Bastard. He could have easily jumped out the window and clawed Hartigan up for even thinking about stepping on his property. But it's like he didn't care one bit, and actually wanted the Bastard to get his ass kicked. Or in this case, his nuts ripped.

SPOILER!!! I think the shot of Wood's character in the Yellow Bastard segment was just another sight gag (Kevin doesn't show up in the book). Did you notice that other characters pop up in different segments? The graphic novels are like that as well.
Besides, Kevin was reading his Bible while Hartigan was sneaking around. Some concentration...
Sorry, Pissin, but I think Kevin would've been blown away by Hartigan's hand-cannon. He'd have to be a better shot than Marv.
And another thing: did anyone see the Die-Hard reference in that sequence? After he's shot by one of the guards and they close in on him. One of them says "Preforate (sic) the fool!" And Willis turns over and shoots them both and says "Good advice."
Think back to the scene in the first Die Hard where one terrorist is shooting Willis through a conference table while top of it. - "You are done! No more table! Where are you going, pal? [reloads gun] Next time you have a chance to kill someone, don't hesitate!" Willis almost unloads an entire clip on him and says "Thanks for the advice!"
Uh-oh, I'm geeking out again...

I noticed Marv at the bar towards the end. didn't notice too much else though.
Sorry but I think Hartigan would have got his ass handed to him by Kevin. He barely got away from the guards, and he barely took out Yellow Bastard. He only got him because he was so stupid and arrogant. Kevin was much smarter and quicker. And he had claws.
I didn't catch the die hard referrence. I probably wouldn't unless it was "Yippy Ki Yi Yay Motherfucker". I thought all the dialouge was taken straight from the book though.

Bout time you saw it Pissin. Told you'd dig that shit -- yeah I wanna see it a 3rd time, now.
Didn't catch the DIE HARD reference, either. That's pretty cool. (I remember loving DIE HARD)
I wonder how that HOSTAGE movie is -?
