WOW Tom Petty and Pearl Jam touring together in 2006?!?!?!? www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1002198603March 17, 2006, 10:25 AM ET Melinda Newman, L.A. and Ray Waddell, Nashville Tom Petty is putting the finishing touches on a new solo album, "Highway Companion," expected to be released in June. Although Petty previously said the disc would be released by Rick Rubin's American Recordings label, confirmation of the deal is still pending at deadline. "I'm reaching there to try and find a theme," Petty tells Billboard of the project, which he previously described as being about the passage of time. "It's just a really nice collection of songs. I think it does have an underlying theme of time and what it does to you." In support of the album, Petty and the Heartbreakers will tour extensively in 2006, with dates concentrated in the June-July and September-October time frames. True to form, they will try something different. "What we're trying to do is a bunch of shows with different artists that either we like or think would be an interesting show," Petty manager Tony Dimitriades tells Billboard. "One of the main things we're doing is a bunch of shows with Pearl Jam. We're also talking to John Mayer about doing some dates, as well as the Strokes." "And maybe in the occasional show there will be a friend [to] come on the road with us for a few days," he continues. As previously reported, director Peter Bogdonavich is also following Petty and company for a film due later this year. Why did the famously private Petty allow for such unfettered access? "I think it's a worthwhile project, and I think it's good that he's going to finally tell this story completely. Sometimes, giving up your privacy is a little like going to the dentist, and we have let him have access that no one's ever had."

I heard Worldwide Suicide the other day and REALLY liked it! Had a good Yield sorta sound to it, which is a good thing because as alot of you here probably know - I am fan of the Yield album... possibly my favourite PJ release! Verdict is still out for me on WWS...Kinda sounds like a left over from Riot Act to me. One of my biggest gripes w/ Riot Act was the way it was produced; I felt many of the songs sounded unfinished, and lack the full complete sound that Brendan O'Brien gave them on Vs., Vitalogy, No Code, and Yield. Adam Kasper produced RA, and produced the new album; I'm a bit nervous about that, as I'm not impressed w/ his work so far.... I do like the middle 'breakdown' part of the song, Vedder's voice sounds cool and if I'm not mistaken there is a shaker of some sorts in the background. I'm a big fan of added percussion....Speaking of, one thing I don't like about it is Matt's drumming. What happened to him? In Soundgarden he was money, w/ PJ he is OK, and only shines on a few songs (God's Dice, Hitchhiker, Insignificance, Save You). He sounds kinda boring w/ Pearl Jam; I miss Jack Irons.

Yeah, I had to listen to WWS acouple times before I really got it...alot of the new stuff's been like that though. The first few times I've listen to pretty much anything from the last three albums the first couple listens are kinda of meh but then it really starts to grow on me.
I've been listening to a boot that came into the store called Alternate Versions...it's a collection of most of the Ten and Vs. era b-sides and a few other odds and ends...but I've been enjoying the hell out of it.

I've listened to WWS about 15 times now, about 10 right when I first downloaded it, then slept on it for a week and listened again....It's not bad, but it just seems like something is missing; at least to me...
Binaural took a solid 3 years for me to warm up to, now I love it. Riot Act has yet to grow on me; I just think it's not that good of an album. I really do like a few songs, but there are also some real stinkers on there.
Yield was an instant hit for me; loved it from first play, and have loved it since.

Paul - Yield is great. I took a lot of heat for that love affair from some friends. And I could never really properly defend it outside of...it's good. I still don't really know why it's good. It offered some of their best singles. Guess it just nabbed sans reason.

What kinda dissapoints me about the new song WWS, is the production...Brendan O' Brien (Vs. Vitalogy, No Code, Yield) really help the band sound loud, edgy and explosive, Adam Kasper (Riot Act, Pearl Jam) makes the band sound flat IMO. Many of the songs have now leaked, but I'm avoiding all spoilers, and waiting for May 2nd...

I just heard WWS this morning. Meh, it's alright. All the way through it, though, I was haunted by the ghost of Pearl Jam past. PJ really got the "anthems w/o being anthems" thing down on Vitalogy and Yield, and then No Code showed that they had the range to pull off pretty much anything they set their mind to. Binaural continued in that vein, with good to great results (is there a more beautiful song in their catalog than "Light Years"?), but Riot Act was just a mess. Vedder seems to want to make big anthemic statements again, but he is resolutely refusing to write anthems. And this song struck me the same way on first listen.
And I really didn't like the glossy power chords -- I've always thought PJ should sound dense and murky rather than crisp and bright. Maybe it'll grow on me, but first blush is that this is a take or leave it tune, and I hope it's not indicative of the rest of the record.

The one part I really enjoy from WWS is the middle bridge; there's some interesting stuff going on, and Vedder's voice fits the music. The way the song starts, and the chorus have yet to grow on me. I'm trying my best to remain spoiler free for this album, and even pretty much stopped going to RedMosquito (a PJ fan forum) to aviod others' opinions of the songs that have leaked. For me, PJ's most beautiful song would be "Off He Goes"; but "Light Years" is very nice as well. Some of my favorite 'slow' songs by PJ: Immortality (especially live) Off He Goes Parting Ways All Those Yesterdays Oceans

For what it's worth, I really have been enjoying WWS after several listens now - I really feel like its mining Yield Territory, which, for me is a very very goo thing, because Yield still is my favourite PJ album to date...
Looking forward to hearing the rest of the disc when it should come out and I` can afford to buy it!

Listened to WWS twice today...still don't like the way Ed comes into the song, but once it gets going it's pretty good. IMO it's a middle of the road PJ song. It's not terrible (like Evacuation), but it's not top tier either (like In My Tree).
That's interesting you're picking a Yield vibe up from WWS. To me it sounds more like a Riot Act song than Yield....
