Hi all,
Just thought of a fun little thread here...
Being as I've received some wonderful CDs from rs.com folks - tons of NZ indie and punk from strawman, industrial and gothic mixes from ueb5 and jllm, indie collections from achnb and al n.... I was thinking one of the nicest things about rs.com was how much new music we not only learned about, but even received in the mail! So here's a board for specifically that purpose. I invite folks here to offer mix CDs (or tapes, if you're like me, and still without a CD burner!) to each other, or to request music from each other, to see if anyone out there might be willing to burn a certain album they've been unable to find or been intrigued about from reading the boards, whatever....
I'll start by saying that I myself would love to hear some of the cancon bands and artists you canadian folks are always chatting about - the weakerthans, the stills, sloan, sarah harmer, etc etc.... and I'm happy to throw together a post-punk tape (sorry, but just a tape!) for anyone interested (i've got some great obscurities on soul jazz and rough trade compilations)... or whatever else you might want from my collection!
Cheers, M

Mary, I'm in the middle of putting together what's turned into a 4-disc CanCon 'boxset' for Ryosuke. Just 4 mix discs of Canadian artists from 1963 onwards, as it now stands. Wouldn't take a whole lot of effort to burn a second copy when I do finish it.

I bet it will be better than the "Oh What A Feeling" CanCon boxe I bought a few years back. Not that it was bad, and it was a good cause, I just have more faith in Doc Drum as a CanCon compilation editor

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Riley. Since Ryo is a CanCon novice, my thinking has been to do a good, bad and ugly set to the degree that that's possible with what I have access to. Don't know if that's fair warning or not... Absolutely no Celine Dion though. And upon due consideration, I nixed a Bryan Adams tune the other day.

Definitely. That last one of her's where she did different mixes for every marketing segment on Earth was fucking genius.

That would be excellent doc drum! I'd love to check out the Cancon box set. But I'll be highly disappointed if you don't include thorough liner notes, glossy pictures of all the bands, interviews with band members, and a big foldout poster. ;P

Nice thread Mary. I also wanted to say (even though I mentioned previously on other boards, but you never responded) that I really like the post-punk/'60s garage rock mix tapes you sent me! ;D

For some stupid reason, I keep hearing Bowie singing "The Prettiest Star" every time I see a post from the former Punk Chick ... must be something about the new screen name ...

For some stupid reason, I keep hearing Bowie singing "The Prettiest Star" every time I see a post from the former Punk Chick ... must be something about the new screen name ... That's funny Ken, Shane told me he had a dream that he was listening to Ziggy Stardust and he heard Bowie singing something about a "silver star." Then Shane told me he really liked my new username. And everyone can still call me PunkChick, there is a reason why I started a new user name when I first logged onto these new boards, but it's a long story. And no, Silver Star is not named after any Bowie song or anything, I picked it cause I was trying to be creative. ~PunkChick

Well "The Prettiest Star" was a pre-Ziggy track (which Bowie cut w/Marc Bolan on guitar, available on the Sound + Vision set) which finally surfaced on Aladin Sane, so it's not that far off ... and it's actually one of my favorite Bowie songs (the Bolan version, I'm not that wild about the ironic reading that made its way onto Aladin Sane) ... and I remember Shane mentioning that, though I don't remember the rest of that particular convo ...
I know you're still discovering Bowie, Punk Chick, and if you haven't gotten Aladin Sane yet, I highly recommend it. But just be aware that there's an even better version of "The Prettiest Star" out there ...
you will rise up and take us all away all because of what you are the prettiest star ...

I wasn't ignoring you on other boards, I just didn't see these posts! I'm glad you like the tapes... were there any songs or bands in particular that you were really struck by? (That might be hard to answer until you've listened a bunch of times, I know!) Cheers, M

Yeah, Ken, I have Aladdin Sane so I've heard "The Prettiest Star." I pretty much like all the songs on that album, but it's not really one of my favorites.
And Mary, there were a few songs I absolutely loved, including "The Killing Moon" by Echo and the Bunnymen, and the first Gang of Four song ("Damaged Goods"). I still need to listen to it more though.
