I thought it wasn't a bad list... some interesting choices (Britney??!!) but I guess we're talking singles and sometimes a poor quality artist throws up a catchy single...
Still... Britney?!! Both #1 and #2 being awarded to the same artist? I dunno, those aspects make it seem like the list was just kinda thrown together quickly.

I can't say that the #1 and 2 choices there are that awful ... or undeserved, frankly. And you know what? Toxic isn't a bad single at all ... disassociate it from Britney, and it's not a bad millenial radio track.
Though the two things that most jumped out at me from this list were (1) how few of the songs I knew, and (2) how little I thought of most of the songs that I do know. Apparently this producer driven decade just isn't doing it for me. No wonder my most played records of the week have been between 20 and 50 years old!

The problem with Pitchfork is they don't really have an identity. They're too busy trying to latch onto the latest trend. The best albums list is even worse sadly.

I can't stand Britney, and even I kind of like "Toxic." I still think Pitchfork is pathetic though.

It took that long to be totally horrified. I cannot imagine a bigger injustice going further...let's see. I'm beginning to think I should be glad these songs are even on this list. see previous I hyped this song to death.....and then radio found it and overplayed it to death. Still, could you go anywhere the last year and not hear this song? This is the one song on the list everybody has heard (maybe "Seven Nation Army" too). Wow, a single I really like recognized at a decent slot. Whoa, the surprise is a pleasant one for once. I guess I really don't know a lot of that list. I think I mentioned almost every song I own on disc.

Pitchfork IS pathetic. The reviewers are the worse type. Too busy trying to play cute with words and posing, and not enough real reviewing. You can read an entire review and in the end, not really know why they didn't like something, but be well aware the reviewer was giggling the entire time they were typing.
And Ken, your comment about Toxic, "disassociate it from Britney", is part of the problem. Way too much is spent on if its "cool" to like/listen to someone. So she hit one out of the park this year, good for her and any listener that can admit to it. That song truly is an ass shaker.

And "Clocks" is one of those goosebumps songs, for sure. I just love it, every time I hear it. It can make me happy or sad, depending.

I heard the song on the radio w/o knowing who it was, and liked it right away. Still do. I've also liked songs by Pink, though I find absolutely no redeeming qualities in Justin Timberlake's work. None. Simply wretched, IMO. So I really don't see how I'm part of the problem here ... I only mentioned "disassociating it" from Britney's image/persona b/c other posters have simply dismissed the idea that there's a Britney Spears single that might deserve a spot in the 100 "best" of the last five years. Though the anti-rock bias of the folks who compiled this list was a bit much, IMO. I would have expected to see "Slither" and something from All That You Can't Leave Behind in this list myself, but maybe that's just how out of touch I am at this point.

I want necessarily saying YOU were part of the problem, just the fact that it had to be said. I haven't quite grasped how to explain myself in full yet. I just really get irked about the whole "whats cool now" attitude".

That's cool Amp. I just wanted to be sure that you knew that I wasn't concerned about such things ... I think I've managed to expend all my "cool" points at this stage in my life ... at least as far as such things as pop singles go.
I am getting a plasma TV later today, though ... does that make me a little bit cool?

I don't really follow Pitchfork a great deal... alot of it is posing and the singles list.... well it was a bit all over the place. I didn't have any grave objections to their choices for numbers 1 and 2, I only thought it reeked a little of lack of thought, especially giving both to one band.
I dunno, I often think I am too closed in to my small world of Australian Indie bands and favourite artists to make a comment of such lists, but to me it wasn't a particularly well reading list to me... it almost seems like they make concessions to the Britney's and whatnots of this world so that we will suddenly think they are not much indie snobs after all?? But what the fuck is up with that?
Maybe the tracks themselves are actually ok too, I don't really know. I think I often suffer from my point of view being narrowed by the kinds of music i tend to focus on in my listening life...
and to be honest for all of the 100 songs they listed, I could come up with my own 100 best songs of the 00's that would look entirely different.

I mean like, how many people had to give up their blood just so you can have a sharper picture while watching "Dateline" and stuff?

Well, I plan on getting some Buffy DVD's and doing a Slayer festival ... so maybe the whole "blood" thing is appropriate!
