Okay, it's almost 4 AM over here, so there is the chance that I'll look at this thread tomorrow and go "geez, why did I make such a lame thread?", but at my present dreadfully sleepy state, this seems like it might be a fun game to play. Or not.
The idea is that all of us are stuck on the same desert island, and were able bring only THREE albums with us. Yes, just three. But of course, we will all be able to listen to what everyone else brings, so we would actually be working together to create one record collection (albeit a very small one).
So which three albums would you bring? Of course, you'd want the library to include as many albums that you like as possible, so the trick is to try to make other people pick the ones you want. For instance, no respectable music collection would be complete without, say, London Calling or OK Computer, but why use your allocated album on something that any number of other people might pick?
So in light of that, here are my three selections (if this was an actual scenario, I would of course be inclined to bring Japanese albums, but I'll refrain from doing that for the sake of fun):
Hate - The Delgados (This is a no-brainer. Drum is the only other person here I know who is a Delgados fan, but I'm sure that there are plenty of other stuff he'd want to bring.)
Nowhere - Ride (Does anyone else here even like this band?)
The Queen Is Dead - The Smiths (Yeah, I thought it would be kind of selfish of me if I didn't include at least one Widely Recognized Masterpiece in my list. The reason I chose this one is that our biggest Smiths fan doesn't seem to rate this album very highly, according to the Smiths board.)

3 albums I'm sure no one would bring with him/her ...
- Shut Up 'N Play Yer Guitar A 3 CDs collection of Zappa's best guitar solos ...
- Sun Bear Concerts - Piano Solo A 6 Cds box of Keith Jarret's piano improvisations Six hours worth ... !!
- Beethoven Nine Symphonies With the Berlin Philarmonic / Von Karajan ...

Devin Townsend - Terria - My favourite 60+ minutes of progressive metal...
David Bridie - Act of Free Choice - My favourite album EVER... the good thing is I can choose this one and I know there are at least two others that would give me kudos for bringing it.... I'm looking at you, Maarts and Mellie... ;-)
Hologram of Baal - The Church Overlooked masterpiece... I can't fault this album!

Phil - It's obviously cheating to include a box set in your lsit...
Scottsy - I actually have heard one song by The Church, off of a compilation tape of Australian music that Ben Peach (God I miss him) sent me years ago. I think it was called "Ungaurded Moment". Neat song, in the vein of Ultravox/Pulp.

Oh yes! The Unguarded Moment... not a bad track at all! Very much an early chart / radio success for the band, but one they sorta distance themselves from these days...
Its really hard to pin down a definite sound for how the Church really are in general, but lets say they draw on a bit of prog rock, a bit of that sort of jangle pop popularised by REM in the eighties and, especially in their later stuff, atmospheric and sprawling sounds.
Without a doubt they're amongst my favourite bands... within the the top three bands I enjoy, in fact!!!

Oh hell yeah! I'm even so sad as to admit that I will get the remastered and expanded versions of Carnival Of Light and OX4 as well in the next few weeks. The first EPs though, Vapour Trail, Nowhere, Drive Blind etcetera are classic shoegazing!

Three albums I'd pick:
* Dead Can Dance- A Passage In Time Skilful compilation of one of the most intrigiung bands ever to grace this planet. From stately pomp to gothlike guitars, moving from ethno-ambient graces to sociological airs...this band has it all and after so many listens still fascinates me.
* Kraftwerk- The Man Machine Wins it on points over Trans Europe Express and Autobahn as my fave Kraftwerk-album- a combo would be nice, but I cannot cheat now, can I?
* Pixies- Surfer Rosa Sure, keep on saying that Doolittle is the essential gem here, but no other album is such hyped up, overdriven, smart, hungry, sexy, no, downright HORNY as this one!

Surfer Rosa is awesome.
My picks:
The Jam - In The City Not as diverse as their later releases, but still a blistering rock record.
Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes Always fun.
Sleater-Kinney - One Beat Some consider Dig Me Out to be their masterpiece, but this one is my favorite. Probably their most consistent album IMO.

I'm starting to like our communal island jukebox very much!
In The City is indeed a blistering album. I must say I find the Sleater-Kinney-albums a bit interchangeable but they are pretty damn good.

You wouldn’t want be stuck on a desert island without a little CanCon, so here’s my three:
Rush – Moving Pictures
The greatest Canuck album of all time. Say it again – The Greatest Canuck Album of All Time. You’ll all come to hear it my way after I crank it up and blast it from one end of the desert island to the other a couple thousand times, I’m sure.
The Rheostatics – Whale Music
The greatest Canuck album of the last quarter century (almost), which makes it the greatest Canuck album since Moving Pictures, which makes it the Second Greatest Canuck Album of All Time. You will all come to understand this after I’ve cranked it up and blasted it from one end of the desert island to the other a few thousand times.
Change of Heart – Soapbox
Hard to choose between this and their brilliant Smile album but Soapbox has "Pat’s Decline" and "Winter’s Over". The former is absolutely sublime and the latter, for its title alone, will I’m sure have all the Canucks on the island alternately thanking our lucky stars to have been banished to a warm tropical island/pining for the Big Chill of home.
Oh, and Ryo, glad to see that you brought Hate.

What a great thread. How did I miss this?
Right then, I'd better make sure there's some Radiohead at the party, and as no-one else chose it my first pick would be OK Computer.
Then, having brought everyone else down (there's no happy pills on this desert island, I take it?) , I'd keep 'em down with Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures.
Third pick (keeping the British theme) would be the Stone Roses' self-titled debut, just to bring a bit of melody and bounce back to proceedings.

Yeah I missed this one too. Nice thread Ryo.
Since I can always count on JLLM and Doc Drum to bring along so many of my favorites, the decision making process gets just a tad easier.
Ænima by Tool. Clearly more for play during thunder showers or stormy days than crisp sunny mornings on the island.
Urban Hymns by The Verve. Good for any time of day, and anyone who objects gets kicked off the fucking island. You hear that Luke. Perfect album. Not one weak note.
Songs From Northern Britain by Teenage Fanclub. I just can't think of a sunnier or more pleasant album, by a sunnier or more pleasant band.
Luke and I like just about all the same bands, but right there are two that might test the strength of our musical like mindedness. Sorry mate. If I had four I would bring Twice Removed by Sloan, but no pressure of course for anyone else to bring that one.

Have you noticed how autistic children, ADD sufferers, and the sexually impotent are always the ones who complain that the songs on Urban Hymns are too long?

I have, but what's more surprising is how yours truly fits all three categories and still I have no issue with song lengths on that disc.
