Orel Hershiser is borderline to get into the Hall of Fame ever. Personally, I think he falls on the not-getting-in side of that line. He was a very good pitcher to be sure, but the baseball hall of fame is the most prestigious of all the sports halls and has the highest standards. Hershiser might be a Hall of Famer, but he's certainly not a first ballot guy--only the greatest of the great get in on their first year of eligibility.

First edition of Baseball Tonight for 2006 is on right now. Unfortunately, they seem to have brought back Steve Phillips. Man, that guy is dumb. Although I do love watching Karl Ravetch, who, along with Peter Gammons, is one of the good baseball guys that ESPN has, doing his best to not go off on him. You can tell that Ravech is fully aware of all the idiotic things that Phillips says, but is doing his best to remain professional. Same thing with when he has to deal with Harold Reynolds or John Kruk.
I'm getting pretty pumped about the WBC. Will anyone else be watching?

That's why they're playing the WBC in Puerto Rico, Florida, California, Arizona, and Japan instead of Quebec.

He's not hurt right now, but he did take himself off the roster because of injury concerns. He was supposed to be on the team though.

Anyone my age who grew up in the upper midwest saw baseball and Kirby as one and the same. In this area he was as big as any kind of celebrity and he personified the heroic, little outsider that has become a trademark of the Twins as an organization and especially those World Series teams Kirby lead. I think most people in this part of the country tried to tell themselves that he could get himself back together, but his post-playing days were quite saddening. It's tragic that this man who seriously inspired so many could never inspire himself enough to really get himself together. It was obvious when one would see him at commemorative events at games, etc. that he had let himself go and that he seemed to need the game even more that it needed him, which is saying something.

Right on, man. Kirby Puckett was one of the icons of the game during a time in which the game of baseball meant more to me than just about anything else in the world. He was such an idiosyncratic player who was endlessly fun to watch, and you could always tell he was having as much fun playing as you were having watching, which isn't as common in the game as it should be.

Yeah, that was an awful shame he went like that. I heard about his stroke early in the day, then later that he had actually died.
Here's something to help cheer you up.
