Yeah, yeah....and oddball mutt Fenway is all about its pristine aesthetics...Wrigley is about the only one you could call conventionally pretty, of the old classic parks.
They also all rely on their historical perspective, what's gone on there...and Yankee Stadium's got that in spades.
Shit, all Wrigley's got is the 'Called Shot' from Ruth...not even a champeenship. Luvable losers indeed.

Wrigley Field has been the site of such historic moments as:
* Babe Ruth's "called shot," when Ruth allegedly pointed to a bleacher location during Game 3 of the 1932 World Series ... Ruth then hit Charlie Root's next pitch for a homer.
* Gabby Hartnett's famous "Homer in the Gloamin' " September 28, 1938, vs. Pittsburgh's Mace Brown.
* the great May 2, 1917, pitching duel between Jim "Hippo" Vaughn and the Reds' Fred Toney ... both Vaughn and Toney threw no-hitters for 9.0 innings before Cincinnati's Jim Thorpe (of Olympic fame) drove in the only run in the 10th inning ... Toney finished with a no-hitter.
* Ernie Banks' 500th career home run May 12, 1970, vs. Atlanta's Pat Jarvis.
* Pete Rose's 4,191st career hit, which tied him with Ty Cobb for the most hits in baseball history ... Rose singled off Reggie Patterson September 8, 1985.
* Kerry Wood's 20-strikeout affair in 1998.
* Sammy Sosa's 60th home runs in 1998, 1999 and 2001.
* the 1947, 1962 and 1990 All-Star Games.

I looked and looked up there...
...and I guess we're still waiting for a Championship.
~
Shit I was at game where Sammy hit a homer that was still rising as it cleared the left field wall...we're sitting in the left field grandstand and we could see it go down the street that's east of Clark for about another quarter block, everybody chasing it.

But honestly, outside of the ivy, I'm not seeing what's so special about Wrigley. I guess it's a cozy little stadium but you can chalk that up to it's age more than any intended architecture.

The novelty of the people on the buildings across the street is pretty cool. Partially fucked up by the new bleachers they're building right now, but only partially.

I just saw Johnny Damon interviewed on ESPN, and he said that the WBC means more than the Yankees/Red Sox rivalry because of national pride, etc.
I'm loving the WBC, but I'm calling bullshit on his claim.

Given Damon's free agency signings, he appears to honestly not find the Sox/Yanks rivalry a big deal. Or perhaps not big enough.
Have I mentioned yet how great it is that that we can finally call it a "rivalry", now that both sides have proven their ability to beat each other? No more of this "hammer vs. nail" nonsense...

I was a little disappointed to see him sign with the Yankess, but oh well. I'm a life long Cubs fan so, hell, man, I'm losing no matter what.

It is.
The USA knocked out of the World Baseball Challenge by Mexico...Oh boy. Did the Mexicans go out on the streets and party for that?

Probably not, as Mexico didn't advance either. Probably some pride in eliminating the U.S., but I think they'd be a lot more excited if they had actually moved on to the next round themselves.

Thanks Rocky. I was asking that because I remember that when Greece won the European Championship Soccer a couple of years ago there were major celebrations all over Sydney and Melbourne by large parts of the Greek community living there. Not sure if there's a sense of competition like you have in Europe, like when Holland and Germany play against each other...

I think that, outside of Latin America, there isn't a really big sense of competition in baseball. The Asian teams seem to care more than the USA team did, but still not nearly as much as all of the Latin countries do. Talent-wise, the best teams in the tournament seem to have been the Dominican Republican, the United States, and Venezuela (probably in that order), but all of the Latin teams are good enough that Puerto Rico and Cuba were able to easily compete. The U.S.'s talent was enough to take them past obviously inferior teams like South Africa, but the talent differential was small enough that those Latin teams that were really playing could definately beat them.
Anyway, of the teams left, I'm still going to say that the Dominican is the favorite, although that Cuban team is really good. Cuba is always a wild card in international competitions, since no one knows a bit about their teams in advance. The Dominican puts out such a large amount of high level major league talent that it shouldn't be surprising that a small island nation like Cuba could be that good, but the fact that Cuba doesn't compete regularly still makes it pretty amazing that they stack up so well.
I'm also very impressed by Korea. It seemed as though Japan should have been very competitive, and that Korea should have been as good as the second tier of Latin teams, but thus far Korea has performed extremely well, and they have to be as likely to win as any of the other countries left. They didn't have to play quite as stiff competition as the American and Latin teams, but they completely dominated the Asian region, and it's tough not to recognize them, as good as they've been.
At the beginning of the tournament, I was predicting U.S. vs. Dominican in the final, with Venezuela and Japan as the other teams in the last round. As it is now, I'll predict the Dominican over Korea in the final. There's no third place game, but if there was, I'd put Cuba over Japan.
