It was a great series, I enjoyed every minute of it. It was great hockey. Of course Calgary has nothing to be ashamed of...they played great, they played their goddamn hearts out. I wanted them to win, they didn't, but they gave all they had. Re: the convo between Doc and Drum earlier. Doc, I'll admit I'm a hockey snob. I always want an Original Six matchup. My hopes when the playoffs started were that Detroit and Toronto would play for the Cup. That didn't happen so I went to stage 2. I want a Canadian team to win it. The point to my snobbery is this...if you can't play the game outdoors in the winter, you don't deserve a hockey team. I worship at the altar of Coaches Corner, and good ol' 'Grapes'. Love satellite hot stove too. Get your point Doc about 'migratory' snowbirds...never thought about it like that. I would imagine that there are a lot of true hockey fans in the South! I imagine I have a more parochial view, hence my snobbery!

Terrible game.
Plus, i hate Anderchyuck or however it's spelt.
I'm not being a sore loser, Tampa played really good, but i think a lot of the higher ups didn't want to see Calgary win. *cough* lop sided refereeing . I counted a few OBVIOUS calls missed that would have given Calgary a power play, one the ref was looking right at it...remember when buddy was rubbing the calgary players face right in the ice?
Money has destroyed sports.

I dunno....watching sports on TV, especially hockey I think doesn't give the most accurate overall view of a game...AND of how difficult the ref's job is.
They get obstructed OR they get a much BETTER view of how and why someone's face might have gotten ground into the ice.....take that Calgary 'goal' in game 6 which I had REALLY thought was past the goal line. And which several of you swore was a shameless ripoff of Calgary...it turns out that achn was right when he said that the vantage point distorted where the puck actually was. Yesterday the ABC/ESPN crew had a computer recreation which geometrically/mathematically moved the vantage point OVER the goal line which showed, yeah, 'close' but it wasn't really a goal, as at least one referee's true real-time vantage point luckily(for Tampa)revealed.
~
...and yeah, imagine how tough it is for someone to really have a real hockey 'jones' in Florida. I mean for a real hockey lover...for us in the north, IF we were born into it and played it, the love comes easily(UNLESS you're in Chicago with Beezleb erm, Wirtz ruining things - grrrr)...and it's easily accessible up here. Minors, juniors, college, the 'NHL'...it's all here...
Down there you're just a weirdo....
...and I can definitely see your "If NOT the 'Original Six', the at least Canada then", Smokie. Makes sense. It does....
...for someone born a Detroit fan....I'm in Chicago. My hockey sensibility is all thrown upside down here...

that abc computer simulation, while neat, did make a few "assumptions" about how high the puck may have been, it's angle, and so forth, based on their best judgement from the available pictures. now if those assumptions turn out to be off by a little, it is conceivable that the puck could have been over the line.
i think the decision was correct though. the determination has to be conclusive, and there just wasn't enough info to say the puck was definitely over the line.
i'm just happy for one of the best players to ever wear the Maine uniform, john tortorella. helluva guy, and a helluva coach. and as his old baseball coach at Maine john winkin once said, one of the best all-time bench jockeys he ever coached. besides hockey, tortorella was also an infielder on the Maine baseball team, teams that went to the college world series. which, speaking of, should begin this weekend(?)

I understand your points Doc, well made. Hey, when you guys in Chicago gonna run Bill Wirtz outta town on a rail?! What he's done to hockey in Chi-Town is shameful.

I will always be convinced from what I've seen that the puck was all the way over the line on that play and it was a goal. That's not to say that Tampa didn't 'really' win the series or anything - the decision was correct in that the rule is that something like this has to be resolved by the end of the next stoppage in play and after that point, there's no going back. No one on the Flames realized what had happened until it was too late. There was no protest from Gelinas or Sutter when play stopped and they needed to raise hell on that next whistle. They didn't do that. In fact, it was some time after play had stopped and resumed before the replay was shown on the CBC telecast. So I don't think anyone realized what had happened until well after the fact.
Did anyone hear about the Tampa Bay Tribune's 'Dewey Defeats Truman' moment yesterday morning; hitting the streets with a morning edition headline "Flames Win Stanley Cup". I tried to find it online line but by the time I got to it they'd have corrected it, if in fact the online edition was ever erroneous. Just priceless.

Oh man, someone musta been asleep at the switch that night...but whaddaya expect for an 'ordinary' Floridian?
"Aaaah, it's that stupid North'nahs game they're playing over at the Arena...fuck, I don't care! Besides, I wanna go home and beat my wife kick my dawg..."
(*hits a random keystroke, turns off the office light, slams door leaves*)
"I'm OUTTA here!"

Been watching the World Cup of Hockey, seeing as it looks like the only hockey I'll be watching this year, unless ESPN (or someone) picks up AHL games here in the States, as they did during the last lock-out. Oh, I forgot, there's always college hockey too. I guess I'll be alright!

I caught a little bit of the Canada-US game the other night but not even all of that and nothing since. Just doesn't feel like it's time for hockey yet.
Probably get a little more interested once they get into the elimination round. Team Canada looks good so far.
Loved those old Winnipeg Falcons jerseys they wore the first night.

I don't think Canadian hockey jersey's should have anything but red white and black.
