So at least our little group has proven to be more passionate about our sport. So to all of you critics: Pffft!
Seconded. Emphatically.

I heard that we will find out just what Materazzi said to Zidane on Thursday. I feel it's all being built up a tad now. It's been discussed and theorised about so much by the media that when we finally are told it's going to be like "oh is that all?". It's like building up a joke too much only for the punchline to not deliver. I fear that Zidane is going to wind up looking silly through no fault of his own. After speaking to my uncles this morning, and thinking about this virtually every minute since the incident, I am convinced that there was nothing short of a credible vicious threat against his family to merit Zidane's attack on Materazzi. Racial slur be damned. This is the final, and Zidane should have known better. Pele played under threat for years. Fans jeered at him, players took cheap shots. He scored over 1000 goals in his career, and won three World Cup Championships. That's how you shut those fuckers up.

Apparently though his mother is seriously ill, and I guess that if someone makes a slur against your sick mum at a moment when you're under intense pressure, then you can see how a player might see red (excuse the pun). I dunno, I still just feel really sorry for him - in spite of him being French - and it did look like he was trying to let it go but Materazzi was just needling and needling til he struck gold. I think that kind of thing needs stamping out too. Dem boys should learn how to play with each other nicely

So much for 'Fair Play' FIFA and stamping out racism. Seems to be just lip service for many of them.

Materazzi's a sack of shit and got what was coming to him. This isn't the 60s, Ken. Obviously Zidane "should" have controlled himself, but he didn't. It was stupid and he's a hothead but given the same situation I don't necessarily know if I would have acted any differently.
And yeah, Materazzi now has a cup or whatever but he's also gonna be widely known as a scumbag who got his shit handed to him in front of 1 billion viewers. Many will disagree with what Zidane did, but a lot of people won't.
By the way, there are some fascinating montages of Materazzi's brand of soccer on YouTube.

Just to clarify, I don't think Zidane should have done what he did, but I can see where he was coming from. That's all.

Hard to disagree with your post either, Ndy.
I just wish he'd nutted him a bit harder - in the face - and drawn blood. Sod professionalism.

Just so we're all on the same page... And obviously we don't know anything "for sure", but www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=395046&in_page_id=1770"First defender Marco Materazzi spoke in Italian - a language understood by Zidane who once played for Italian side Juventus - grabbed his opponent and told him 'hold on, wait, that one's not for a n***** like you.' As the players walked forward Materazzi said: 'We all know you are the son of a terrorist whore. According to reports in France, Zidane's mother is seriously ill at the moment and had to go to hospital on Sunday morning. Other French players have told journalists that their colleague was particularly sensitive because of this mother's condition. The player is fiercely proud of his family’s Arab background - and his mother who struggled with almost no money to bring up five children. The family were originally from the village of Taguemoune, in the remote hills of Algeria. Soon after France’s 1998 World Cup win - when Zidane scored two goals - Jean-Marie Le Pen, leader of the Front National, was complaining about the racial origins of the France team, singling out Zidane as 'a son of French Algeria'. His comment was carefully loaded. The implication was Zidane was either a colonial lackey or a traitor to the country of his father's birth." Obviously it's one man's word vs. another's here, but still.

Just to clarify, I don't think Zidane should have done what he did, but I can see where he was coming from. That's all. Likewise. I'd also like to see comeback on Materzzi though - otherwise FIFA's declarations of standing up for fair play and against racism mean squat. The usual empty gestures.

I like the bit where Materazzi claims he doesn't even know what an Islamic terrorist is - "I am not a cultured man". Hilarious.

I'm even prepared to declare soccer players are quite possibly the most talented and well conditioned team sport athletes in major sport... Bah. Everyone knows America's Super Black Athletes could physically dominate any sport we pay them $30 mil a year to dominate.

Bah. Everyone knows America's Super Black Athletes could physically dominate any sport we pay them $30 mil a year to dominate. This is true and not true. It'd be nice if our inner city kids wanted to hold the WC trophy instead of sign a 30 million dollar Nike basketball endorsement. Surely the one advantage that the Brasils of the world have is that all of their kids, specifically many of the athletically inclined inner city kids, play soccer from the day they're born. I don't think it's wrong to imply that many of the more gifted physical specimens in the US come from the inner city projects or less financially affluent areas. That the US could trump most any country in funds and training facilities is a point that's pretty readily apparent too. But to imply that any one step would assure any country's dominance -- even the mighty US -- in the sport of soccer is a bit off the mark, as it's a bit more complicated than that, and the ball doesn't always bounce where it's expected etc etc. But if the Allen Iversons and Shawn Marions and Chris Pauls of world played soccer I imagine we'd be getting out of our groups more times than not.

All professional athletes are doped up. I've got a really hard time arguing with this. A few years ago I would've disagreed, but now this is getting close to being a self-evident fact.
