mary, I know Drum has priority but you made me a wonderful Nick Cave casette a couple years ago which prompted me to buy Let Love In, so do you have an extra you can burn of your Birthday Party mix?..I would be most grateful
Tunes, that is very cool about SD..they just played the SD street scene and heard they were great..I'm looking forward to their upcoming LP
........Patten, how is Postal Service?...I listened to a couple songs the other day and was sort of intrigued.....
So, started teaching today at SDSU, and you all know me well enough that I never make mysoginstic comments, but geez louise...this first day of school with still-summer weather brought out a plethora of well endowed women......there, I said it!!!

Bow, I think Mary said she didn't have access to a burner in California so I'd be happy to make a copy of that mix and send it to you if that helps.

Drum, very kind of you to offer to forward that mix along to bowiglou - your memory is excellent, I don't have a cd burner here in California. So bowiglou, alas, I can't burn you a mix as well - which is really regretful also becaues this is such a sloppy, nonsensical mix - the one I just sent to punkchick is really the perfect birthday party mix. I might be able to borrow my roommate's cd burner and make a better mix, but I can't promise anything... So I was watching the Republican convention last night with my boyfriend, and there is a good chance that he has to go back to Vancouver ( ) in March, and he said, half-jokingly, "so if Bush gets re-elected, will you come to Vancouver with me?" but on second thought... maybe I would. I don't actually have to physically be in berkeley to write my dissertation, and I really truly loathe the ideology of this administration so much that I feel completely alienated from this country as long as bush is in office. It's weird, i've never felt this way about an election before - utter dread. I definitely didn't feel this way in 2000. But now I just genuinely feel like I don't belong in a country that re-elects George W. Bush - I'm not saying this as an attack on the people here who are voting for him, nor am I suggesting he's a fascist or he's going to destroy America or anything melodramatic like that - I just feel radically estranged from his administration's vision, and I don't really like being here while he's in office. NP: Diamanda Galas - Plague Mass (song: This is the Law of the Plague) Cheers, M

It's okay, Mary. I don't hate Bush THAT much (though I don't like him either), but I can see why the whole administration would make you uneasy. I can't wait to hear the Birthday Party mix, I really hope I like it! I'm going to Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom tomorrow (which is technically today, but you know what I mean) with my friend Vanessa. Should be awesome. And RocDoc, I will definitely go on at least one rollercoaster.

Interesting, Mary. How about going to Vancouver with the boyfriend because you want to be with him?

maarts - Hey, glad you liked the discs! Re: Supercar Yeah, good call on the industrial-like guitar work in Futurama. It's especially evident in the middle of the opening track (I suck at remembering song titles) when the mad guitar riffs just come at you with full force Ð I remember going "wtf? Have these guys gone industrial all of a sudden?" upon hearing it for the first time. Of course, Koji Nakamura's vocals are way too detached to ever pass off as anything even remotely similar to Trent Reznor's angst-ridden narcissism, and I hope this doesn't turn anyone who doesn't like NIN, or industrial music in general, off from checking out Supercar if they ever have the chance, because the end product you have is nothing like NIN or Ministry. But some of the guitar-playing does indeed recall that type of music at times. I'm pretty convinced that Futurama is Supercar's masterpiece, although the new one, Answer, comes damn close (but not quite) to equaling it. Of course, there will always be a contingent of Supercar fans who'll insist that the guitar pop fest that is their debut album, Three Out Change, is their best, but don't listen to them! My favorite track off of Futurama is the final one, "IÕm Nothing" (and I know that luke likes this song too). You know, I really don't know how they came up with a title like "Bats On FireÓ for that song (one of my faves from that disc, although my absolute favorite Great 3 tune is the 11th track, "Caravan"). I think the lyrics actually do mention bats somewhere (something about hearing the sound of bats in flight), and I guess Akito Katayose - who I assume wrote it - thought it would be cool to put them on fire! Their lyrics actually aren't ironic at all Ð many of them are love songs, and usually aren't happy. Their most ironic aspect is probably their band name, which you have to admit, is pretty dumb Drat, I should've sent you her earlier albums instead of Ai No Poltergeist! Considering that you liked "Koi Wa Psychedelic" (track 7) and "Hikari To Kage" (final track) Ð two songs that have that weird, kitschy/cutesy factor to her singing Ð which played a more dominant role in her previous works (typified by a song like "Sensei No Okiniiri" in which she extolled the joys of being the teacher's pet). I always liked that in her music, but she kind of shed it as she moved on, and given how much I love her present form, I'm not complaining. Nice to hear it creep up to the surface from time to time though. I honestly have a hard time coming up with a favorite song from that record, since I love it in its absolute entirety Ð from the opening drum beat to the closing banjo note Ð but at gunpoint, I would probably say that it would be "Hard Bop" (track 5), with its wicked, wicked bass lines and Mayumi Kojima singing with metric amounts of Ð and this is a word that never would've been used to describe her music when she debuted - soul. Now now, let's not forget about the other half of the songwriting team, Eiichi Otaki . But yeah, you were complaining about how you couldn't find any solo works by Hosono, so I thought this would be a good one to burn for you. The first track ("Haru Yo Koi") is my favorite from that albums as well. Have you heard that song that was used in the Lost In Translation movie (or was it just in the soundtrack and not featured in the movie itself?)? I still cannot believe that a Happy End song was used in a Hollywood movie... Lookin' forward to receiving them!

The only plus, which is not really a plus, of seeing them get re-elected would be watching them wear the consequences of all the shit they've been doing.

All great tracks, but strangely, of that lot, I think "The Bends" is my favorite. That song has always just rocked my arse.

Come on up, Mary! I've never been to Vancouver, but I've heard extraordinary things about it and get the feeling you'd love it there. OK, I feel really strange. I was all excited about the Social D show yesterday, went home to tell S - and he DOESN'T KNOW IF HE WANTS TO GO. What is wrong with him? He's the one who turned me on to this damn band in the first place!!! So we actually had a bit of a tiff about it, especially since I told him I'd pay for the tickets... and then I called him this morning and he was like "fine, just buy them" in that way that says he's really not happy about it. Apparently I still don't understand boys, even ones I'm gonna marry someday. And it wouldn't be a big deal except that my concert-going companions are thinning out, and I don't have a single concert-going companion who is a Social D fan. And it'd be different if the tickets were $15 or something, but what non-fan is going to spend nearly $50 on a ticket? So it looks like I might just be going by myself, and that makes me very sad this morning. The end.

I was thinking more in domestic political terms, Phil. Look what happened here with Mulrooney - massive majority in 84, lots of dissention during his first term but uses fear (vote for free trade or lose your job) to win another big majority in 88. Backlash hits in the 93 election and he watches his party be destroyed and ends up the most reviled politician in living memory.
Could happen there, too. A hard rain's gonna fall.
"The Bends" rocks!
