That’s a good thing cause I figured I was gonna have to come in here and kick some ass. That Rileydog – great musical taste but good god can he ever spin the rumours! BTW Jesus, that wasn’t the band U2, it was the single "U2" by the group Negativland. Casey Kasem, 'Snuggles', "These guys are from England and who gives a shit?" I can’t hope do it justice here but seriously, one of the funniest recorded artifacts the human race will ever leave behind.

best song on Saucerful of Secrets is "Jugband Blues"

I can see that . . . Luv "Jugband Blues" . . . but I think "Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun" has it beat, even if it is "classic" or whatnot. And my personal favorite oddity off that one is "Corporal Clegg" - (I believe it was an early Waters piece). "Remember A Day" is very nice, as well.
Their '82 album OBSCURED BY CLOUDS is masterful.

You mean '72 album and yep, Corporal Clegg is woefully underappreciated. I love that song. Set The Controls is masterful too. I just happen to think that the emotional force of Jugband Blues is just a notch better, is all.

Ritalin - glad to hear you came around somewhat on The Boatman's Call, though i actually agree with you that I'd take the Birthday Party over that album. I just don't think it's bad - indeed, i think it's utterly gorgeous. But lately I've just been favoring overtly psychotic music, so the Birthday Party has been far more in line with my recent musical obsessions. There's something unbelievably cathartic (not to mention funny - do people really just totally miss how fucking hilarious the Birthday Party were??) about listening to Nick shriek at the top of his lungs "wherefore art thou babyface?" while he re-imagines Hamlet as a murderous thug with a gun.
Punkchick, it's hard to recommend a starter Birthday Party album cause Junkyard is probably the most complete crystallization of their vision, but it's also such a fucking psychotic album that I can imagine it turning you (or anyone else) off without some preparation first. It certainly turnd me off the first few time I heard it, though obviously I've come around. You could pick up Hits (which is intentionally ironically titled, being as the Birthday Party clearly never had any hits!), which does a nice job picking and choosing songs from their entire career, from the early, not quite psychotic Hee Haw stuff to the artistic pinnacle (imho) of the Mutiny and The Bad Seed eps.
I'd also be more than happy to make you a tape (or possibly even a cd if my roommate will let me borrow his laptop to burn it) of the best that both the Birthday Party and the early Bad Seeds have to offer. Let me know if you're interested...
Cheers, M

I am contemplating something fairly laid back tonight... not sure what I am going to choose, and I am really feeling so darn lazy... If only I could will the CD to get into my changer and play itself... everything seems to require effort tonight!
