Yeah. There are a lot of cool bands right now borrowing from Brit post punk type stuff and The Stills are as good as any of them IMO.
Not quite as ambitious or varied as Interpol.
A bit more substantial than Longwave.
A bit more gritty than Idlewild.
Not quite as novelty as Hot Hot Heat.
A bit less tight than Franz Ferdinand.
A bit more consistent and focused than The Walkmen.
Basically there as good as anything I hear out there in that vein.

June Carter Cash's final disc, Wildwood Flower....um, I dunno, but as a 'legend' and all, I haaaaate this disc...
Wavery, very unsure-sounding voices just don't do much for me...someone might say 'oooh, but it's so charming', but it's not going to be me.
'Scuse me, I gotta rock....

yeah the turntable is still out so I thought I'd do a '79 vinyl day...listened to bits of
The Ruts...The Crack The Skids...Scared To Dance The Members...At The Chelsea Nightclub Graham Parker And Tghe Rumour...Squeeing Out Sparks Citizen Band...Just Drove Through Town
Citizen Band are one of those bands that really should have made it big. A vehicle for Mike Chunn (fresh out of Split Enz)and his brother Geoff...great songs in the vein of Graham Parker, maybe more power pop. This album has a version of "Protection", which I rate better than Parkers original. Backing vocalists include the entire Split Enz of the day amongst others...Yeah they should have been great....

multiple times I have gone on these boards praising the legacy of Graham Parkers "Squeezing out Sparks"..this album is a perfect confluence of musical talent (the Rumour were a hot band) biting lyrics and keen observations.........I have to give this album a 10.0, and one of my faves from that era.....I put it on a par, in terms of temperament and wit with Costellos' 'Armed Forces", especially given that both albums seem to use metaphors of love and war

been listening to a compilation album from '79 as well. It came about by a English record company advertising for unsigned bands that thought they had the sound of '79. The album does capture the punk, post punk, reggae punk feel of that time...the album title is 499 2139 which was the phone number the bands were rerquired to ring...anyhow theres music from... Les Elite The Classics The Act The Lambrettas The Brick Wall Band Sinister Malcolm Practice ( I suppose thats a take on Mal Practice) Wolfboys!! Escalators Reafer Wardens The Vye
and did I say its fucking good...yeah theres enough of a punk/new wave feel here to keep me smiling...
Yeah great idea The Rocket Record Company!!

Lat night I popped on Type O Negative's release from last year, "Life is Killing Me".... still a darn fine, entertaining and quite humerous listening!
Apart from that its been a good diet of Eskimo Joe (Aussie band from Perth), Big Heavy Stuff, and the new Gomez, which despite differing opinions on it, I am really quite enjoying alot!!! A very diverse and interesting set of songs, a more straight ahead arrangement in alot of tracks, but also some are still downright quirky and interesting. I'm enjoying it alot, I have to say.

That new Beta Band hasn’t quite reached escape velocity with me yet, Riley, although that could be more due to the listener than the disc. Really, it should be right up my alley but listening distractedly while driving around in this pissy Nova Scotia spring putting up lawn signs probably isn’t the ideal way to break a new disc in. BTW, not to put the arm on you or anything but I’ve got one of those with your name on it, if you’re interested.

Yes it is, Doc! Next month there will be some hype about the fourty year-ago visit to blah blah blah and EMI has FI-NAL-LY decided to drop the prices on the Beatles back-cat for a change! Now I can pick up one of those box sets for just about half the price!
Beta Band's Fromk Heroes To Zeroes has grown on me very very much indeed. The sixties-sunnyness meets the dubby electro-style in full force. Made me think of Bill Laswell gone indie-guitar as well.
Let's Roll is one of my fave tracks of this year- put it on Scottsy's CD-R that i made for him too.
