You dare to give Mellie shit about her Powderfinger love? Ooooh, not nice... My first exposure to them was the Odyssey album, and as an appreciator of nearly everything that NZ's incredible Finn brothers have done, I was hearing echoes of Crowded House, solo Neil, a bit of the Enz as well....so for me, Odyssey was a total 'hook' grabbing me and not letting go....then I found Double Allergic at the same used store and am convinced that y'all GOTTA find a way to forgive these guys their success and just enjoy 'em. I mean you've GOTTA see that Up And Down And Back Again just totally rawks, don't you??? Even the huge Oz-hit, 'My Happiness'.... NP - Los Lonely Boys self-titled debut....ANYone with an appreciation of Santana/Los Lobos styled rock and roll's gotta get this...great players 100% all the way.

....something tells me Strawman is on a nostalgic kick today!!..........you just gotta love the glam-punk of NY Dolls.......
Rockdoc ...I did buy the Powderfinger CD a couple of years ago, gave it a couple of spins, and thought it was OK, but not overwhelmingly so...maybe I need to give it another try......
As for Aussie and NZ bands, I have enjoyed quite a few (the clean, chillls, finn brothers split enz, paul kelly and the messengrs, hoodoo gurus, straitjacket fits, etc. etc.), but to be completely predictable, for me the apex of Aussie music is Midnight Oil...a group of integrity, spirit, sheer melodicism, and at tims, utter heartfelt ferocity.............true, as an American I didn't always understand their specific frames of reference, but the music and the inflection of Garrett's voice sufficed...I tell you, when I first heard 10, 9, 8, etc circa 1984 (or so) I just fell in love with that group........also, back then, rather liked Hunters and Colllectors, who I saw on a double bill with the Oils....

the last 48 hours I've primarily been listening to Patti SMith's latest 'Trampin'.....................I've generally liked Patti Smith but haven't been a huge fan.....however, this LP has changed that..there is one song called "mother rose" that literally has a visceral impact...her voice is of amazing form, the songwriting is exemplary, and the band of some longtime stalwarts is astounding.......I'm not sure what the critics are thinking of this one, but as for one man's opinion, this is an amazing contribution to 2004........................there are a couple of songs that you feel she is bequeathing some her experiences and wisdom and travails that she as accrued through what I'm sure is a pretty fascinating history........
Even though some may still think of rock and rolll as a kids game, when I hear the words of Lou Reed or Patti Smith or Bob Dylan or Neil Young, etc...all from my era, each approaching or beyond 60 years old, it is fasciniating seeing them as the first generation of rock and rollers in their hexa-years addressing issues directly relevant to them and their cohorts.........of course, I am well aware dylan, reed, smith, and young never pandered to the adolescent sect, even when in their 20s..........but when you hear Patti Smiths latest or Reed pondering 'magic and loss', it completely adds a new dimension to rock and roll...and not just the 'greying' of rock but rather the maturation of rock......

It's pure magic in and of itself that some of these people are still alive....let alone with some sort of a semblance of their vision of what rock and roll was to them when they were younger!!
How in the FUCK do they still do it?
Oh, some for better and some obviously for worse, but MANY 'for better'....
The 'hope I die before I get old'? What happened to that?
They LIED!!! And god bless 'em for it...
~
NP The 3 Tenors - Live in Roma...the 1st and best of the 3 huge collaborative shows these guys did....Nessun D'orma ALWAYS brings a tear...

Speaking of Patti Smith . . . yeah, just as soon as I got my turntable, I pulled out my old copy of Easter and let my friend here some real punk rock'n'roll: " Baby was a black sheep baby was a whore, baby got big and baby gets bigger..." Y'all know the rest of it so I'll leave it at that.....but it sure did bring a smile to my face to let that shit rip for the new generation. " I haven't fucked much with the past, but I've fucked plenty with the future" ~ patti smith

If ONLY I could answer that question, bowiglou!
Alas, I can only dream as to how she might have been . . . and how she still is today.
Seeing "Crow" live would kick ass...

Bow...this is weird- I listened to Trampin' and apart from some really good gems like the title track and Peaceable Kingdom, I was quite bored with some of it (Gandhi, Radio Baghdad)...the repetetiveness in the longer tracks, which is actually a bit of a signature started to grate me. The lyrics though are fine as ever- good grief, the bile in Radio Baghdad! ...and what has happened to her in the picture in the insert? ?? My god, like a witch being dragged backwards through every hedge in England! She looked awful! Now I'm not advocating that every rockstar should look glam on the cover or inside of their album but honestly, she had me worried there as she looked as awful as Keef in the early seventies after a heavy session.

I haven’t been listening to Trampin’ quite as unremittingly as I did some of her other post-retirement albums like Peace and Noise when they were first released but I’m with Bow – an exceptional effort. "My Blakean Year" is the overall standout and an instant addition to the Patti Smith canon, IMO. Christgau’s line on Radio Baghdad seems to nail it, "the amateur-Arabist rant-and-release of "Radio Baghdad" speaks poetry to power. It won't prevail. But it's a comfort".
As for her appearance, hey, she’s 57/58 years old – she looks OK for her age. After an only briefly punctuated 17-year long hiatus from record making, I’m just glad that she’s been back now for five albums that if they don’t have the incendiary shock of her 70s records, display the same kind of verve and commitment to her art. Plus, she shows no sign of letting up.

JLLM would be proud of me. I suddenly find myself living with a goth. So it's all about obscure miserablists in the air now. Wumpscut? Death In June? Rasputina. I'm drowning in wonderful misery.
DENVER!!! A real scene at last.
