'High' sort of has become my favourite late evening-disc, the one I play before going to bed. I just love songs like Because Of Toledo, High and I Would Never for the syrupy, yet wonderful stringarrangements- it leaves you with this little sense of beautiful melancholy... Wish they didn't have to take more than 5 years each to produce an album though!

I'm breaking out of my world-hispano folklorEEEsta jag....first with a something mellow, with undeniably polished finely crafted little gems...with the just slightly off David Lindley sounds buried here and there among this 2 disc's songs... Then I needed to RAWK! Hence: Probably the BEST 5-song opening salvo of pure insane rawk that I've heard outside of a coupla Zeppelin discs...and maybe Soundgarden...

I of course adore the Stone Roses debut, but the Happy Mondays are one band whose appeal I will never, ever, ever get.

Been in a strange musical mood lately, hence the LAST 5 DISCS I'VE LISTENED TO: Journey JourneyJourney Look Into The FutureJourney NextSupertramp Even In The Quietest MomentsVangelis El GrecoI've also been listening to the debut CD from OKC's FELLOWSHIP STUDENTS, The Youth Want Distortion (the above image is NOT the album cover, since I don't have a way to link it here)...it's really a great album. Here's a press release about the Students from the Oklahoma City University website: OCU composition alumni Nathan Siler and Steven Stark form the backbone of “The Fellowship Students,” named Best New Artists in the state by The Oklahoma Gazette. Music critic George Lange writes: “I first saw this band on what I believe was their third gig, performing in front of about 15 people, and as a good friend of mine recently said about that performance, “You never see Lang’s jaw drop while watching a band, but it happened that night.” In the 10 months since that performance, the Fellowships have tripled their repertoire of frighteningly intelligent progressive pop, performed in a production of ‘Hedwig and the Angry Inch,’ in which they sold out the Stage Center for a midnight performance, and are set to release a debut EP. If there is any justice in this world, they will be massive.”
The group performed early this summer in the rock musical "Hair," a Chocolate Factory Theatre production at Stage Center. On June 22, the Fellowships hosted a CD release party for the band's debut EP, "The Youth Want Distortion."Please visit my blog, JACkory's Listening Room, at www.jackoryslisteningroom.blogspot.com. Wasn;t sure where to post this one, so here it goes. So I am flipping through Vanity Fair last night and they always have a fun “coming soon” page with this and that. Well, it mentions the forthcoming EP from Juliette Lewis and The Licks, which I have been anticipating for months (they are suppose to be fantastic) and then I read that Minnie Driver is releasing an album. WTF? I guess she was a singer before becoming an actress, but still, WTF?
Anybody else hear anything about The Licks? They have an old Hole member (hehe, I said hole and member). They have songs you can listen to at their site, but my computer at work has no speakers and my computer at home took a dump. Anybody hear anything yet?

Well, I was listening to YES perform LIVE AND IN MY FACE, last Friday, and it was greater and more amazing than I had anticipated (and I anticipated a knockout show, of course). I hadn't seen these ol' geezers since shortly after their 90125 tour . . . actually, scratch that: I saw that one, and then I saw em perform a couple years after that. It musta been 1989 or so when I saw them last.
The Red Rocks YES show was nothing short of phenomenal: what a match made in heaven, that venue and YES! With their Roger Dean designed backdrop, and the masterful lighting accompanying the music's mood phases and syncopations, along with the natural splendour of the Red Rock cliffs as an additional backdrop, the entire audience was transported to another dimension as these prog veterans utilized the stage as the cockpit of their space ship, flying back through time to deliver classics starting out with Going For The One (not my favorite song of theirs, but an inspired version nonetheless), And You And I, they even delivered an astonishing rendition of Closer To The Edge which was right on the money, and my particular high point of the show was when they actually played South Side Of The Sky, from Fragile (a song that was not on any of the preceding setlists, from what I've heard). So South Side Of The Sky was a real treat for us die-hards.
Steve Howe came out and stunned everyone with a super shredded version of "The Clap". I was sad he didn't play Mood For A Day, but the frivolous strumming and picking of The Clap made up for it. I was telling my friends I thought he looked kinda like Elrond, the head elf.
So if Howe is Elrond . . . then none other than Rick Wakeman must be Gandalf: I mean, take a look at that cape of his! Yeah, to watch and listen as Rick Wakeman tickled the ivories . . . yeah, it was well worth the 8 hour drive out there for that. They all gave it their best, and there was no doubt as to their superiority in every way over Dream Theater's quite feeble opening set. Don't get me wrong, I love Dream Theater as much as the next progressive-music lover . . . but man, did they ever disappoint, with a too-short set (45 min) and badly chosen songs (I think they were playing to the "Yes set", and miscalculated by a long shot). YES went on stage and started rocking to heretofore uncharted heights! The only decent, really strong song from DT was "Stream Of Consciousness", off of their new album Train Of Thought. That was the only Train Of Thought song. Disappointing to say the least.
But seeing YES was like being transported back through time, a psychedelic extravaganza.

I'll kick in a vote for the title track of "Look Into The Future" -- Schon does an epic 70's solo through it!
D o n (not feeling so guilty now from burning a Best Of EARLY Kansas for a bud last weekend)

Yeah, you're right there, Don...all those first 3 discs(pre that piece of shit Steve Perry ) had major high points. I saw that band tour that 'Next' disc, and it was one of the heaviest shows I'd ever seen....on drums they had the almighty Aynsley Dunbar! A madman. Today however:

Amp - JLLM mentioned Minnie Driver, but I thought it was a joke. I wish it had been a joke.
I saw JL & The Licks on a mag cover. I think it was a metal mag. Are they supposed to be heavy?
