they're a fantastic band, Jay (sp.) Their fourth album from 2003 is, imo, their best yet.. the most focused and melodic of all. They're a bit like Godspeed, but i wouldn't push that comparison too much. The Do Makes are more aware of the possibilities of groove and percussion, but by no means are they dance or anything like that. They're definitely post-rock, along with that genre's habit of feeling self-important and brooding fairly often.
anyway, if you were to pick up any of their albums, pick any up as long as you stay 100 yards away from the debut album (which was undercooked and, quite frankly, terrible.)

imo, the single best song that the Do Makes ever wrote was "Frederica", so use that one to d/l and decide whether you like them or not. It's pretty indicative of what they're about.
they're from Toronto, by the by. which makes them hometown heroes to me.

Sgt. Pepper is probably my second least favorite Beatles album out of the ones I've heard (after Magical Mystery Tour).
How did you like Master of Puppets, Phil?

I'm the one who bought that album for Eldest Son ...
He's more into obscure nordic Death Metal and Power Metal music ...
(sound all the same to me !!)
The heaviest music I ever bought way back then was the first Black Sabbath and Uriah Heep albums and of course Led Zeppelin's first four albums ...
Then I discovered JAZZ !!

4. Good News... 3. This Is A Long Road... 2. Moon and Antartica 1. Lonesome Crowded West
Not gonna bother with SSS, et. al.

i'd rank them like this:
(1) Lonesome Crowded West [just perfection]
(2) This Is A Long Drive [forever associated with a girl i knew in first year uni]
(3) Moon & Antartica [okay, but a dissapointment after Lonesome]
(4) Good News [honestly! not as good news!]

I'm probably more in line with Rit''s list, but really all four are pretty solid one way or the other.
Building Nothing Out Of Something to me though, for an odds and sods type compilation, is as well put together as just about any of theri regular releases. The flow even resembles one single studio session with appropriate track suequencing.
Plus, "All Nite Diner" is one of my 5 favorite tunes by MM.

yeah, there's lots of gems on that comp. looks like they were one of those bands who rarely wrote a bad b-side or ep track.
until recently.

"Worms vs. Birds" is signature gold Modest Mouse as well, although I recently had "Dukes Up" stuck in my head for like a week.
