Achn, buddy I feel for you. It's been over a decade since I put my beloved tabby cat to sleep ... and I still get teery-eyed talking about him. His replacement is still "the new kitten" even though he's now going on his eleventh b-day this Halloween. You've just got to do the right thing by the animals, and know that you've given him a great life, no matter what happens now.

I'll just join the chorus, achn, but I've been there a couple times, too. It's hard when you get down to having to put a pet down but you just have to think about what's best for him. Hang in there, man.

achn2b.........I also will join the chorus and wish you well.......a couple weeks ago our dog started acting a bit peculiar, shaking, limping etc....and much lassitude...anyway, last week a vet said she is getting quite arthritic and though antibiotics have helped, she defininitely is not the same........so I know we'll have to make the same tough decision down the road...hang in there Achn2b....

Bow, I used to use a product called Equiflex for my old black Lab's arthritis. Basically just a glucosamine/chondrotin based food additive originally meant for horses but she did very well on it. Very noticable improvement in her condition after we put her on it.
She's passed on now and this was several years ago, so I don't know if it's still available or not. Of course, these days you could just go to any pharmacy and pick up a bottle of glucosamine caplets.

well, i had to put him to sleep a lttle after noon today. he'd only gotten worse overnight, he was so frail and lifeless, and i could see he just had no spark left in his eyes, he was just in horrible pain. i got to spend a few minutes with him before we did it, and while i held him, he made that moaning/growling noise that cats do when they aren't happy. all he wanted was to be put on the floor, and when i did, he walked unsteadily over to a corner and just plopped himself down.
there he let me pet him and talk to him while the doctors were preparing themselves, and i helkd and talked to him while they injected the stuff. i was really broken up at the time, and right now it hasn't registered. i feel as if he's just gone for a few days and will be back soon. but i know that isn't so, and when it does sink in, it'll probably hit me hard all over again.
i'm tearing up as i type this, but he was so obviously feeling terribly, and was just a shade of his normal self, i couldn't bear to see him suffer through any more. now i just have to learn to live without him. and i miss him so already.

I think that all our hearts go out to you, Achn. And if I may suggest, I've found that one of the best remedies for losing one dear friend is to go out and get another ... when my last pit puppy died (at age 13), I don't know what I'd have done if I hadn't already had another pup there in the house. It just seems so empty w/o them around. I really do feel for you here ...

Very sorry to hear that, achn. I know there's not much I can say here that will help now, but it gets better with time.
And Bow, if there's anything else I can do to help on this, let me know. Hope it works for your dog.

yeah achn...I do feel for you...we had to put our cat down a couple of years ago, after having him for over 18 years...sort of never thought of a time without him, and we still haven't got ourselves another pet
in saying that the neighbours two cats have adopted us and spend huge portions of the day at our place...greatest pets you can have...no food or vets fees, and no need to organise the kitty babysitter when we go away!!
