Looking through my collection it's kind of amazing how few great American bands are present in it when so many UK ones are prominent. I guess my 5 favorites would be: Creedence Clearwater Revival R.E.M. The Velvet Underground The White Stripes Wilco Weeping -- this is part of why I've (re)started this board. When you start talking about "greatest bands ever" you inevitably hear the same suspects: Beatles, Stones, Clash, Who, Kinks, U2, Radiohead ... AND THEY'RE ALMOST ALL BRITISH! Virtually all of my favorite UK (and related) acts are groups rather than solo artists (the exception being Bowie, of course). On the flip side, when you start talking about greatest solo artists, well then we Yanks dominate: Dylan, Springsteen, Petty, Young, etc. So picking the greatest American band becomes a really interesting discussion, as (aside from the VU) there isn't that much agreement as to who the "usual suspects" are. I've actually been surprised at how much agreement there has been here. I suppose I should ask for folks to submit an official list, and then tally them all up a la the Rolling Stone Project. Anyone interested in that? Anyone interested in tallying the results? ('cause if I do it, we might have 'em by the end of the year!)

I'll submit a list, but I ain't tallyin'.
It's interesting to me that the mainstream will always agree that the Beatles and the Stones are the "greatest bands ever", with The Who and Pink Floyd right there on their heels. And usually, the underground will agree.
But when it comes to American bands, Aerosmith, The Doors, and The Eagles will always dispute top honors, but "the underground" usually couldn't disagree more.

So we're actually trying to nail this down eh? I thought it was just the standard nerd debate we typically engage in to no apparent end Someone please explain to me what I'm supposed to post.

OK, if folks are interested enough in this discussion to make it a bit more formal ... here's the ground rules.
Submit your list of the 15 top North American rock and roll bands by next Friday, September 23, 2005. I'll then tally 'em up, and release the list some time the following week. You get to define what a band is (so if you think Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band are a "band" then you can vote for the Boss: if you, like me, think of that same act as Bruce and his back-up group, then leave 'em off). You also get to define what "rock and roll" is -- big tent, extremely limited hard rock, whatever definition that works for you. However, I get to define what "North America" is: Canada, the United States, Mexico, and the islands of the Caribbean.
Ties are allowed, however, if you tie (for example) R.E.M. and Nirvana at number three on your list, the next entry below them will get the points for fifth place, not fourth. In other words, only the top 15 bands that are on your list will count, even if you have enough ties to give you twenty bands total. (Does that make sense to every one?)
If I can figure out the messaging system, I'll send a copy of this out to everyone on the boards. I'm open to (reasonable) changes to the above rules, so if you've got any suggestions, let me know.
NP: Pearl Jam, Fortunate Son (live in Perth, Australia, w/Johnny Marr on guitar!)

Cool! Maybe at some point we could narrow down the final results using a poll.

Cool! Maybe at some point we could narrow down the final results using a poll. I'll see how close it is amongst the top vote getters, and then put up a poll for it as well. But with all the activity around lately, I'm a bit worried that people aren't even going to know this is going on. Is there a way to send out a message to all board users or something, Strat? I took a quick look at the message screen this a.m., but couldn't see how to do a mass mailing, short of typing everyone's user name in the "to" box!

Swear to GOD if Audie Pietre hadn't succumbed to a most unfortunate fatal accident about ten years ago, ACID BATH would have had the opportunity to remain today as one of the GREATEST BANDS this country ever produced. With only 2 albums in their catalogue [Their stunning debut "When The Kite String Pops" and also "Pagan Terrorism Tactics"], these psyco-aggressive rockers were bristling with enough corrupted catharsis to encompass a dozen tired wanna-be's of today. They may have met with unexpected dissolution when their beloved bassist met up with his Maker all those years ago, but their legacy clearly lives on through today and unto eternity in the true rock pantheon as idols worthy of our love and devotion. I just ordered WTKSP on vinyl to commemorate this crucial 90's band legacy, which lives on through my stereo speakers to this day. *LONG LIVE ACID BATH*
