I'd actually be pretty interested in a list about non-UK/North American artists and/or bands. Seems like we discuss only artists from those areas because we have most in common with them...it'd be jolly good fun to find out if you have some foreign stuff on your listening diet and how it'd compare to your standard musical fare....

Yeah, I'm entertaining this one, too. Originally, I was thinking that I'd allow votes for bands from NZ or Oz in the UK ballot, but then started thinking that the down under scene really deserves better than to be lumped in with the British Isles. So I think that, at some point, a Greatest Rock and Roll Band NOT from the US/Canada/UK is a discussion we should have. But maybe not just yet ...

..don't think an NZ or Oz best band comp would work...all the great indie bands from my part of the world have not been heard by more than a couple of people on here....so go Crowded House, The Finns, Split Enz.....ummmm spot the problem...if Neil or Tim aren't there most of the boards supporters won't have heard it...
...I'd rather we all made a local mix CD and distributed some copies and then had a bit of a discussion/vote maybe....at least everyone might know what I'm on about......

the world's a bit bigger than just Oz/NZ. I'm pretty sure Sigur Ros (Iceland) would get a few votes.
Or Ali Farka Toure, Youssou N'Dour, Fela Kuti, Can, Kraftwerk, Neu, Amon Duul, Bob Marley, Lee Perry, Peter Tosh, King Tubby, Bjork, Daft Punk, Paolo Conte, Ryuchi Sakamoto/Yellow Magic Orchestra, Susumu Yokota, Opeth, Dimmu Borgir, Sinead O'Connor, Hedningarna, GusGus, Meshuggah, Jan Garbarek, Yulduz Usmanova, Hector Zazou, Pan Sonic, Merzbow, dEUS, Johnny Halliday, Jacques Brel, Zap Mama, Amalia Rodrigues, Cristina Branco, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Sergio Mendes, Olodum, Chico Cesar, Tito Puente, Buena Vista Social Club, Celia Cruz, Sepultura, Chieftains, Le Mystere Des Voix Bulgares, Diamanda Galas, Vangelis, Jean Michel Jarre, Tangerine Dream, Serge Gainsbourgh, Abba, The Hives, Einsturzende Neubauten, Laibach or BAP just to name a few.....
...and if we could include Quebec as being 'outside' North America, I'd predict a top ten finish for La Bottine Souriante....

These random banner ads at the top of the page are really effective in some sort of subliminal way. I just about booked an all gay cruise to Alaska a minute ago.

Great list.... loved that tie for second too! Good to see at least a few of my favourite bands getting in there in the top ten... I don't feel like my choices were so "out there" after all!
However I noticed a good many of the less high profile bands of my choice didn't even make the list..... which is a - ok and to be expected really!
Great work Ken! a List we can all be truly proud of and feel like we have proven our musical worth over! :-)

Ya know, one of the things that hit me about this list is how different is was from what we would have had just five years ago. NIN got one or two votes, Guns 'n' Roses barely registered, as did Metallica. Really, this list doesn't seem too enamored of any one particular style or trend. When I started this board, I wasn't really thinking about a formal survey, but I'm glad we did it. Even if we did crown the Velvets rather than X as America's Greatest Rock and Roll Band.

Going back to that idea of an Oz list... I have to agree it would serve the musical scene rather badly.... as Probably Maarts and myself a few select others would be the only ones who know more than the obvious big name ones...
Quite frankly, I'd hate to see another list of "top" Australian bands featuring INXS, ACDC, Midnight Oil, Crowded House, Silverchair and others of that ilk....some of which are brilliant, but so misrepresent everything going on down here...
