Yeah - oops. Ah well, I haven't posted here in an age anyway. It's been a long time since I've had such an enjoyable online conversion about music. I've started posting here a lot lately, Ken guided me to this site...but I don't have anyone to talk to the Kinks about, and that completely sucks! But today, along came dolly, and I'm happy ;D Hehe - thankye kindly. Likewise Mr Cook. Laterz

Just remembered Two Sisters from Something Else... not sure why, but I really like it. Strange little harpsichorded ditty. I discovered a great little shop in Leeds that always had them for a fiver, but I was too poor back then and only managed to pick up Face to Face remastered before I moved town. Damn that was a good record store... Wow, I've an image of you like Jack Black in High Fidelity now. The Kinks should employ you as a street teamer. Too funny! Yea if someone comes in the store and ask for Justin Timberlake I tell them to get the fuck out, now. My friends run the place, and I'm a silent partner, but where I work is a short Metro ride to the store, and on the same line (red line for those familiar w/ DC). I'm hoping Ray Davies notices sales of his Kinks albums have gone up significantly in Washington, DC over the past year. I'd bet that our store has sold more Kinks in the past year than any other store in the USA. As you can tell, I've been doing some hard core preaching.

FYI, the all time best cover of a Kinks song is the Jam's terrific rendition of David Watts. With a hearty "Oi!" to put an exclamation mark on every chorus, it completely transcends the original in every way.
Paul, if you haven't ever gotten into the Jam (or Paul Weller's solo career), you really need to. Weller definitely followed in Davies' footsteps as far as observations of everyday British life, and songs like Mr. Clean, Man in the Corner Shop, That's Entertainment, and Wild Wood are all every bit as engaging (if not more so, IMHO) than anything in the Kinks' Katalog.

With a hearty "Oi!" to put an exclamation mark on every chorus, it completely transcends the original in every way. I disagree. The original is way better, better drums, and Ray's delivery w/ the vocals can't be topped. The Kinks offer a more, for lack of a better word, thumpin' sound. And the Kinks do an "hey" instead of "oi", but I think their impact is greater. I do like the Jam a lot however, and I do like the cover of David Watts; they do an honest job IMO. I just think the Kinks version flows better and is played better.

"Man In the Corner Shop" is a very good choice for a song, I like that one a lot.
I don't know if I would say the Jam is more engaging than the Kinks though. Ray IMO has a better delivery for getting his lyrics out, plus there is something in his voice that's more honest. I don't know if that makes any sense at all, but Ray has this innocence to him that I don't think Paul had.

Oh, but I do agree w/ you that the Jam's cover of David Watts is hands down the best Kinks cover out there. However, I haven't heard Wilco's version of Oklahoma USA, and I'd imagine they do a good job.

I don't know about Wilco covering "Oklahoma USA" as a full band, but I do have an mp3 of Jeff Tweedy performing it solo. I'd be happy to send it along if you've got room in your email inbox for a small mp3...or can accept a transfer over AIM or something.

A friend of mine did a great version of 'I'm Not Like Everybody Else' with her band that was one of the highlights of her show...the other two being an inSANE cover of 'Somebody Loan Me A Dime', doing the Bozz Scaggs/Duane Allman arrangement AND Jeff Beck's Goin' Down with all the start-stops...great guitar player this woman.
Adrienne Clement, known as Addie...from Palo Alto..

PCook, i'm impressed with your love of music (and with the fact that you love to talk about it too) Thank you I have a strong passion for it...I still have much to learn (stoner rock for example), but I have a never ending curiosity to know and understand almost all types of music. So far my favorite to study has been classic rock... The bands from the 60's IMO to this day can't be topped, and I listen to them almost everyday. For about a solid 7 months now, my passion has been the Kinks. Here's a band that completely blew my mind, and caught me off guard. I've known of them my whole life, but never got into them, and considered them 2nd tier to the others from the Brit Invasion; boy was I wrong, very wrong. I've never had a band completely take over me like the Kinks, and I'm pissed at myself for ignoring them all these years; better late than never I reckon...

yeah, sounds good. in the past year or so, i've actually regressed a bit.. my tastes got more narrow and a bit simplified.... but 4-5 years ago, i was purposely trying to expose myself to everything i could possibly get my hands on: free jazz, psychedelic rock, metal, indie rock, even classical.
of course, it was easier then.. i was 20 yrs old and somehow my mind seemed more elastic then.

about the Syd Barrett stuff.. i did make that compilation and its on my harddrive.. if you use SLSK you could get it off me. The Syd-Pink Flyd stuff you'd find easier to get into if you're a Kinks fan, as the Kinks have more in common with that Syd Floyd era than with the classic rock Pink Floyd everyone knows and loves.
