One of my favourite Kinks songs.

good one indeed, that's a song that sounds like Mr. Dylan help to influence....Have you heard Van Halen's cover?
Kontroversy is an album I adore, but don't listen to often....the Kinks' cover of "Milk Cow Blues" is awesome, and the album has one of my absolute favorite Kinks songs "Dedicated Follower of Fashion" -- Ray Davies at his smart assy best.

Van Halen covered Where have all the good times gone? Haha - no I haven't. Just been reading the covers Mix CD board - you should put that on there - if they do it justice that is. It's hard to imagine I have to say....
I love the sound of some of the songs on Kontroversy - they just sound....fresh. Where have all the good times gone, the world keeps going round, til the end of the day. ... And yeah - Dedicated Follower as a fab pisstake of all the Dandies of the day. You can almost see Ray and Dave sat there sneering at them over a pint of beer and an overflowing ashtray.

Milk Cow Blues is great. Who did the original? I forget - actually, I don't think I ever knew in the first place.
Shit - I'd forgotten how an afternoon can be whiled away in this place. I've not even had lunch. Oops.

"Sleepy" John Estes did the original... www.cr.nps.gov/delta/blues/people/sleepyjohn_estes.htmIt's been a long time since I've heard the Van Halen version of "Where Have All the Good Times Gone"; I heard this version before I heard the Kinks though. They also covered "You Really Got Me". I've been thinking of that mix, but I don't have a lot of Kinks covers, none actually. My idea was to make a mix of Kinks covers, and songs the Kinks covered such as "Milk Cow Blues." A few years ago Wilco used to cover "Oklahoma USA" only live though. The song is from the Muswell Hillbillies album (1971), and Wilco never recorded it....I'm trying to hunt down a bootleg.

Stomach still rumbling....
I'll check that link out - cheers.
You know I can really see Wilco covering Oklahoma USA - I really can. Maybe someone will have it as a file-shared mp3.
One Kinks cover I do not like is the Pretenders Stop Your Sobbing. Nasally, saccharine - but then maybe I am clouded by Chrissie's destructive effect on Ray and Dave's relationship - though I realise they fought about anything and everything without her influence. But anyway - do not like.
One that I'm not sure if I've heard or just been told about (my drug-addled goth days) is The Mission's Mr Pleasant. Ha. Whether I've heard it or not - it's just wrong. Wrong wrong wrong....

I agree about Wilco, I can just envision Jeff Tweedy really doing that song justice...
The Missions doing "Mr. Pleasant" -- that's odd. "Mr. Pleasant" is also one of my absolute favorite Kinks songs, the piano so good It's kinda eerie and sad, yet happy all at the same time.

Almost as odd as the Sisters of Mercy covering Gimme Shelter... I might have to seek both out for nostalgia purposes. Mr Pleasant is cool - it's like Sunny Afternnoon in reverse - but typically both guys end up pretty fucked. Never a happy ending whoever the subject

This is fun going between threads to talk about roughly the same subject, the mods should be happy about that.... So what are some of your favorite Kinks songs? (other than "Where Have All The Good Times Gone")

Yeah - oops. Ah well, I haven't posted here in an age anyway. It's been a long time since I've had such an enjoyable online conversion about music.

Muswell Hillbillies.... You are quite right - also not particularly well-received I believe. You have a very good point. Maybe I was right the first time by saying the Stones were followers rather than visionaries. They just did it bigger, sleazier and with more glamour than everyone else... Also out of character for Davies the observationist voyeur. I wish I had a copy, not listened to that since I had access to my folks vinyl collection. Y'know Kinks CDs are ridiculously difficult to find in the shops, in comparison to Beatles, Stones - even the Small Faces. Mgiht have to hit soulseek. I somehow missed this earlier.... Muswell is a fantastic album, not very accessible, but it's a hell of a listen. I love the sloppy ragtime sound. You can find a lot of the remastered Kinks CDs for cheap on eBay....Or check out Amazon.com. If you were here in the States, I'd say order from mine and my friends' store in DC... I've single-handedly turned the place into the premier place in DC to buy the Kinks. We've sold so much there, I get a real kick out of turning people onto them. Many are reluctant at first, but once they hear them, they're sold, new life long fans.

Just remembered Two Sisters from Something Else... not sure why, but I really like it. Strange little harpsichorded ditty.
I discovered a great little shop in Leeds that always had them for a fiver, but I was too poor back then and only managed to pick up Face to Face remastered before I moved town. Damn that was a good record store...
Wow, I've an image of you like Jack Black in High Fidelity now. The Kinks should employ you as a street teamer.

Yeah - oops. Ah well, I haven't posted here in an age anyway. It's been a long time since I've had such an enjoyable online conversion about music. I've started posting here a lot lately, Ken guided me to this site...but I don't have anyone to talk to the Kinks about, and that completely sucks! But today, along came dolly, and I'm happy ;D

You've listed many I would probably have listed if I hadn't snap posted under pressure from the other half to get the turkey fillets out of the oven Y'know - I'm going to come up with a better list over the weekend and post it here for you. I shall give it some thought! Right - I'm being quizzed about noodles now - I'm supposed to be having dinner cooked for me - but I think my help is required. Pumpkin Beadz over and out. Later dude, it's been fun!
