i voted for Hall and Oates. they had a terrific body of work up until the Voices(?) album, when they started doing crap like Your Kiss is on My List. after that, it was all downhill.
but up till then, much of their stuiff was spectacular. a healthy mix of blue-eyed soul, the philly sound, rock, and r&b. just listen to She's Gone or Sara Smile and not find yourself grooving.
the Cars are right up there, but their catalog of good stuff is much smaller. one great album, one pretty good one, an experimental electronica one, and then pure drivel.

I have a recurring dream where I punch Timothy B. Scmidt in the face repeatedly when he sings the really high parts on "I Can't Tell You Why". Joe Walsh laughs everytime. Both parts make the dream worthwhile. that's funny, cause it's one of the few Eagles' songs i can stand. that and Walsh's In The City.

I just can't see how an of those bands could be called under rated...I think in fact it would be hard for me to select which of them is the least overrated.....but lets face it..I'm from Outer Botswana, home of the under rated band......

I'm with Straw. I can't vote for any of those as 'underrated.' The Cars might possibly be, but have they not received their due?
btw - Lynyrd Skynyrd.

I voted for Alice in Chains... just cause out of all of those, I enjoy their music most, and their music was, to my ears anyways, the best out of all of those... I'm not much into the others.
I guess there's a bit of 90's kid element to it for me as well. :-)

All of those bands are extremely underrated in critical circles (except the Eagles.) It's not really a list of who had the least commercial success.

Nice list Ken. I am indeed a Housemartins fan (which just reminded me that I left them off my list on the British Isles board, shit)... but I'm actually an even bigger Material Issue fan. One of the finest power pop trios that ever was, IMO. Ellison could craft a catchy pop hook like no one's business.
As for this poll... er, I guess I'd have to say the Cars, though I don't know how underrated they were either...

Thanks Tunes ... maybe you can help me convince Clubber that these bands really aren't that obscure (except for Dream Syndicate anyway). And Material Issue should've been huge ...

Don't think it's an issue of obscurity...it's more an issue perception.
You're sitting around getting drunk with your buddies and you say that The Cars are the best band of the 80s, they're going to laugh at you. You say you like the Eagles, people are going to tell you that you're fucking stupid. Duran Duran will always be snickered at, Sublime will always be lumped in with Sugar Ray, Skynard will always be a "not nearly as good as the Allmans", redneck, fratboy band, and Stone Temple Pilots will never be properly ranked with their alterna-90s peers.
The only band on here which I don't think is the least bit underrated in this sort of sense is Alice In Chains, although I wouldn't have said that just five years ago.

For faceless gay white guy soul though, Hall & Oates have never received appropriate props. Let's be honest here.

I was trying to think of some witty comment to surround this with, but I can't, so here goes:
"Ball and Scrotes."

the only band of the above that I really care for was the Cars..and even then that dried up after their first 2 LPs..but they were the first to get a new-wave song on the popular radio..followed closely by the Knack

Looks like the Cars are actually doing quite well in the polls there! :-)

My favourite band on that list would be AiC, but they're fairly highly rated... so I voted Duran Duran. Not exactly a band I rate, but:
- They got unfairly dismissed as an eye-candy boy band; a disposable pop group. Well now we know what a real eye-candy boy band actually is, don't we? And it's not pleasant. Whereas these Brummie chancers could write and play at least, and came up with some killer pop hooks and groovy basslines.
- All the things that saw them ridiculed are now celebrated in bands like The Killers - anthemic songs, pop hooks, danceability, melody... we're not ashamed anymore of bands creating 3 minute pop songs. There's no longer an indie-snob mandate to 'enjoy' only bands like BRMC. Good thing too...
- When they'd stopped agonising over writing the next number 1 single and concentrated on their album tracks, they could write passable songs like The Chauffeur. Not enough people know this.
