i love it that rocky loves the zombies so much... And it's still driving me nuts that nobody else here seems to! the zombies would totally make my top 25 list....but yeah, they don't crack the top 15. gotta exhaust all my post-punk obsessions before i get there!!

This is so hard. Avoided knee jerks as best I could and just tried to take Ken's advice and go with "who does it for me". Bands from the last 25 years just really keep my interest more than bands for the most part before 1980.
15. Echo & The Bunnymen 14. The Jesus & Mary Chain 13. The Cure 12. New Order 11. James 10. The Who 9. Pulp 8. Trash Can Sinatras 7. Joy Division 6. XTC 5. The Verve 4. The Beatles 3. Teenage Fanclub 2. The Smiths 1. Radiohead

So here I go. An honest enough list. Decided it'd sound too contrived if historical. It's my favorites tinged with a touch of critical analysis. I'd originally planned on doing my critical thoughts with a touch of my favorites. Regardless, the Beatles still may not have cracked the top 5, and Led Zep would be toward the bottom of the list.
15. Radiohead 14. The Verve 13. Primal Scream 12. Black Sabbath (they'd have beaten out Maiden before this year's Ozzfest...hey, a legacy has to count for something, y'know?) 11. Iron Maiden 10. Judas Priest 9. Thin Lizzy 8. Motorhead 7. The Pogues 6. The Cure 5. Joy Division 4. New Order 3. The Jesus and Mary Chain 2. The Clash 1. The Smiths
And Mary, it's not your fault that the Americans completely owned the Brits in the 90s musically. Certainly the one decade the yanks were indisputably better...

It took everything in me to not include metal. I just don't listen to those bands enough anymore to make it worth using up valuable slots.
That said Iron Maiden and Judas Priest should be on every list ever, truth be told, regardless of topical relevance.
For instance. 10 best vegetarian breakfast options - #3 Judas Priest.
Don't ask me how it works, it just does.

Not entirely settled on this but I think I’ve tried about 27 different versions of it so far, so it's time to get something down "on paper". Guess we’ll call it a first draft. Very, very difficult indeed, particularly in final band placements.
1. Roxy Music 2. The Beatles (fulcrum point of this whole uneven list...) 3. Elvis Costello and the Attractions 4. The Who 4. The Kinks 6. XTC 7. U2 8. The Mekons 9. Sex Pistols 10. The Clash 11. The Smiths 12. The Pogues 13. Joy Division 14. King Crimson 15. The Fall
Honourable mentions to: Pretenders, Gang of Four, The KLF, The Chameleons, Pulp, Radiohead, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Cure, The The, Suede, Primal Scream, Talk Talk, New Order, T.Rex, That Petrol Emotion, Ultravox!, James, Eurythmics, Boomtown Rats, Cocteau Twins, Prefab Sprout, Thin Lizzy, Pet Shop Boys, Queen, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, The Pop Group, Fatima Mansions, Ultrasound, Waterboys and about 1000 others…

Suede should probably be on my list somewhere. Fuck. I'm not fixing it. Nice list Doc. Man you guys really like The Pogues eh?

The Pogues - definitely. Shane MacGowan traded talent for booze but there was no better writer in the UK in the mid-to late 80s.

I forgot The Stone Roses. This isn't even fair.

Goddamn, this is hard. But I was missed out on the American one (mostly because I fought with the list way too much), so I need to take part in this one!
This has little to do with cultural relevance, and everything to do with the bands that mean the most to me. Thus - no U2. (I used to love 'em, but Bono makes me so crazy that I can't even listen to them anymore.)
And I'm counting Elvis Costello as a solo artist
I'm still not entirely happy with this, but here goes nuthin'...
1. The Clash 2. The Undertones 3. Pulp 4. The Beatles 4. The Who 6. The Kinks 7. Echo and the Bunnymen 8. Psychedelic Furs 9. The Police 10. The Animals 11. Super Furry Animals 12. The Housemartins 13. James 14. Lush 15. Rolling Stones

Ugh, that sucks already. ... had to modify to include the Housemartins, who definitely deserve a place on my top 15. Unfortunately, that means so long to the Smiths - shocking, I know...

01. The Beatles 02. Radiohead 03. U2 04. The Who 05. Cream 06. Pink Floyd 07. The Rolling Stones 08. Led Zeppelin 09. The Kinks 10. The Clash 11. The Yardbirds 12. The Jimi Hendrix Experience 13. Jethro Tull 14. The Jam 15. Supergrass
I wanted to include the Jeff Beck group, but it's various incarnations never seemed to be concrete enough to ever be really a band.

Now, there's a pretty nice list. I intend to buck the trend and include only bands that actually have some claim to "greatest."
