We've spent enough time debating the colonial's finest, now let's head across the Atlantic. This is for bands who hail from the British Isles -- i.e. Great Britain and Ireland. Same basic rules as last time ... you get to decide what a "band" is, and what defines greatness, I get the final call on whether a band is "British" (for lack of a broader term) or not. So who gets your vote? The Beatles or some substitute? The Stones or some band wearing disguises? Do the Sex Pistols rule, or were they just dreaming from the waist? I really want to know ...

Ah, the first 5 or 6 for this one will be easy for me, and I expect we'll have a bit more consensus in those slots, though the orders may be different. After that it starts to get sticky. Advance warning: though I tend to place the Beatles over the Stones overall, don't be surprised if they are below the Stones for this one - comes from my definition of "rock and roll band."
I just can't explain who will be in the top slot for me.

I have a vague feeling that whomever I poll in my top 20, they won't appear in the final list. It's probably gonna be the wholy trinity of faves- Beatles, Who, Clash. So pick one of those three and we're done...

Just to start thinking about this one is to realize that the Brits really do own us all. I mean, just the Muses, Motorheads, Massive Attacks - whatever - that you're gonna have to leave off your list!

I could make a "favorites" list from the British Isles, but a "greatest" list, which would have to include folks like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Who...man, I'd fall asleep before I got to fifteen of those old fogies.

Here's a "Favorites" list:
10. Iron Maiden 9. Thin Lizzy 8. Motorhead 7. Joy Division 6. The Verve 5. Blur 4. The Pogues 3. The Jesus and Mary Chain 2. The Clash 1. New Order
Honestly can't list more than that without having to start digging into folks like Franz Ferdinand, The Darkness, Bloc Party, and the Libertines. I could probably give you a bigger list of Aussie or Japanese bands than I could British. Had to stare at my music collection just to get those ten...

JAC -- read the first post, this topic is supposed to cover all of the British islands. So if your favorite band is from the Isle of Man or some obscure crag in the channel, this is their chance to shine. Welsh, English, Scotch, Irish, whatever ... they're all fair game since they're from the British Isles.
No, I don't expect the very top of this list to be shocking, but let's think about this for a minute. Where do Radiohead fit in relation to the sixties British acts? Will the Clash be named on enough ballots to offset their being left off of others? Will the Beatles, Stones, and Who split the "boring old fart" vote to the point that someone else winds up on top? I think the results here could be very interesting.
I started to put together a list, but damn this is hard! The top three are easy, and in fact it's really easy to come up with ten ... but limiting it to 15, and then trying to put together some sort of ranking, is damn difficult. So here's some names to just toss into the mix (aside from the Clash, the Beatles, and the Who) covering a pretty wide swath of genres:
U2, Simple Minds, the Rolling Stones, New Order, the Jam, Housemartins, Genesis, Queen, the Smiths (not my cup of tea, but oh so important), Oasis, Blur, Radiohead, Elvis Costello and the Attractions, Echo and the Bunnymen, the Waterboys, the Animals, the Kinks, Dire Straits, Cream, Traffic, Status Quo (kidding!), Siouxsie and the Banshees, the Cure, Depeche Mode, Joy Division, Gang of Four, Motorhead (never make my list, but I'm sure they'll pop up on somebody's), Def Lepard (see Motorhead), Led Zepellin, the Yardbirds, Massive Attack, the Chemical Brothers, Stiff Little Fingers, Big Country, the Damned, the Buzzcocks, the English Beat, the Specials, Madness, the Boomtown Rats, Coldplay (I'm sure there are people out there who'd put them on the list), Eurythmics, Squeeze!, Franz Ferdinand (Luke, if you put Interpol on your US list, you can put FF or the Libertines on this one), The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, the Pogues, Thin Lizzy, the Verve, the Cranberries, Garbage, Graham Parker and the Rumour, the Police (definitely on my list!), Pet Shop Boys, the Pretenders (?), the Proclaimers, the Psychedelic Furs, the Pet Shop Boys, UB40, the Undertones, World Party, Duran Duran, and of course the Spice Girls!
And I know I'm missing a ton of bands who deserve (at least some) consideration ... those were just ones I found easily in my head (or iTunes). This is gonna be a hard list to narrow down, the Brits really do put together great rock and roll bands.

Even among this music-savvy group, we're at 10+ posts without a single mention of the Zombies. Tsk tsk.
What's the deadline for our lists on this one?

Alas, I did not read the first post. I now see the implications of Ken's "tread". Sue me.
Usual suspects. Beatles. Stones. Who. Led Zeppelin. Black Sabbath. Joy Division/New Order. U2. Too many awesome bands came from the Brits to even count.
