Fairport Convention is a great band but R'n'R is not one of their forte ... !
Should have put Porcupine Tree in my list ...
Oh well ...

Jesus Christ (or Jesus and Mary Chain!) there are a lot of excellent British bands! I'm gonna try to post some sort of list/justification for at least some of my picks tomorrow ... it is gonna be really tough to try to justify leaving out names like Roxy Music, Squeeze, XTC, Blur, or Radiohead ... but there are just so many to choose from. And who will include Wham! on their list? Riley? Phil?

Did I read that right? Did Ken say leave out Radiohead?

Yeah, I'm not sure that Radiohead will wind up making up my final top fifteen. There are just sooo many bands here to weigh ... and so many are sooooo good.
Squeeze, on the other hand, are almost certain to make the final cut.

Still working things out but I’m not 100% certain Radiohead will make my top 15 either. Don’t get me wrong – I love 'em and they are a great band – but there’s a sense in which their career, particularly post-OK Computer, has been all about avoiding the mantle of anything like 'Greatest Band in Christendom' and I’m not sure that a) that impulse shouldn’t be honoured at the end of it all, and b) that they haven’t (to a degree) succeeded.

I could easily fill out a top 25, 40 or even 100. Do we have to restrict ourself to 15?

Britian really does seem to shit all over alot of other countries in terms of influential and groundbreaking music for some reason... maybe i have a particular bias there, but there does seem to be a hell of alot of really seminal rock albums and bands that have come out of the British Isles...

I don't mind. I'd have to do that list within the next two weeks or so as I'm about to move house and I don't know how long I'm without a connection.

Completely forgot about "The Smiths" in my favorites.
Ken-
I doubt Def Leppard will make anyone's list!
I surely didn't put Interpol in my American list...
And Ken, I guess if you want to call Garbage a "chick band", you can call them British, but every member but Shirley is American, including Butch Vig, who is probably much more a driving force behind the band than Shirl, IMO...she's almost like an instrument for the guy.
Didn't mean to come off too snotty in my last post. May try and knock out fifteen of these. I have muchos respect for the British stuff, but I suppose I always took the Beavis and Butthead view when it came to those "whiny English dudes."
Motorhead certainly belongs on any list, though. The famed missing link between punk and metal.

maarts -- there's no way in hell I'm compiling votes of 25 or more bands from all the active posters here! If you want to make up your own personal top 50, 100, or 10,000 UK-related bands, I'd love to read it. But I'm only gonna count the top 15 for this survey. BTW, how does next Friday sound as a due date for ballots? That should be sufficient for everyone, I think. Luke -- I was just tossing Garbage out there b/c of Shirley, and as a contrast to the Pretenders (Chrissie was, I think, the only Yank in the original Pretenders). The biggest point I was trying to make was that it really is as valid to vote for 15 modern British bands as to vote for any of the old fogeys. I don't think there's anyone here who hasn't established their "credentials" so to speak, and so it's not like you'll be slagged if you name the Killers the number one band ever. Well ... maybe if you name the Killers number one we'll give you a bunch of shit, but as long as it's a little more reasonable than that ... Drum -- I agree with you on Radiohead. If I forget about Kid A and Amnesiac, and maybe even I Might Be Wrong, they'd likely have a spot here. But they have really run from any kind of "greatest band" label for long enough that they've taken themselves out of real contention here. And when you compare their catalog with long running bands like XTC or Squeeze, well, it just doesn't make a strong case for them. Similarly, the fact that Blur (IMHO) pretty much lost the plot on their last few albums is going to hurt them, and no matter how much I love the first two Oasis albums, I've gotta admit they've done a pretty effective job of sandbagging themselves since then. So I'm thinking that nineties Brit-pop, for all its popularity at the time, may not wind up being well represented here. I'm really curious how this is gonna play out ... particularly once we get past the top four (I'm really expecting that some combo or the Beatles, Stones, Who and the Clash is gonna dominate the very top of this survey, but I might be wrong).

I'll have my list ready by Friday... probably by Wednesday or so... I'm on holidays, after all! And I am going away from Thursday through till Friday, so I'd best have my list posted before then, methinks!

My problem, Ken, is that I really DO think the Beatles are the "greatest band ever." The Beatles, Stones, and Who will all make my Top 5, even though I don't listen to the Beatles and don't even like the Who. Maybe I've had too much respect banged into me by the "old fogeys", but I'd just feel silly putting The Smiths or the Jesus and Mary Chain down as the "greatest British band ever."
But yeah, I'll come up with something...

I’d have no problem with someone arguing The Smiths over the Beatles, in fact I’d love to see it. I mean, we all love the pantheon but rote historicism is as boring as it is unenlightening. Of course the same can be said for knee-jerk anti-historicism. Which is to say that I'm not saying there's anything wrong with posting 15 'classic rock' picks, if that's what floats yer boat. Drum -- I agree with you on Radiohead. If I forget about Kid A and Amnesiac, and maybe even I Might Be Wrong, they'd likely have a spot here. But they have really run from any kind of "greatest band" label for long enough that they've taken themselves out of real contention here. Actually Ken, I do rate Kid A, I Might Be Wrong and even Hail to the Thief, though I think this reticence to really take hold of the thing and run with it holds them back on the latter. Like I say I haven’t 100% decided. Considering their records and their presence on the scene over the last decade, they should be a cinch. But this avoidance thing just hangs over that band. More and more, in fact, as years go by.
