Damn. I was hoping someone would do it for me...leastaways someone from the same apx era as me could prob pin these down pretty easy...few 'obscurities'. But easy to see your consternation, Ken. I just ain't that concerned about being 'counted', but here's the auteurs..
Exile On Main Street - Rolling Stones Live At The Fillmore (neè Band Of Gypsys) - Hendrix' band of that name Live At Leeds - The Who Abbey Road - The Beatles Liege & Lief - Fairport Convention (who someone here said doesn't 'rock') ZoSo - Zeppelin Bloodsugarsexmagic - RHCP Louder Than Love - Soundgarden Stain - Living Colour Powerage - AC / DC Hotter Than July - Stevie Wonder The Dreaming - Kate Bush Gasoline Alley - The Faces Love Over Gold - Dire Straits Waiting For Columbus - Little Feat Mad Dogs And Englishmen - Joe Cockeur Get Your Wings - Aerosmith Benefit - Jethro Tull Abraxas - Santana Fighting - Thin Lizzy Force It - UFO Undertow - Tool Kill City - Iggy Pop Four Way Street - CSN&Y Johnny Winter And Live - Johnny Winter

Thanks RocDoc. It just makes my life a little easier. I knew the better part of the list, but "Benefit," "Fighting," "Force It" and a few others would have been mysteries to me ...

*best put this in by 5*
*disclaimer: these albums are *off the top o' my head*, so they're not thoroughly considered and/or balanced against the entire backdrop of albums I didn't think of. Also: I *tried* to limit it to 1 album per band; only in extreme cases did I list otherwise.

As far as boring old rock goes Thorn, that's a pretty cool list

This last post courtesy of a guy who fessed up to the fact he still owns gazillion records made by HAIR & SPANDEX bands and at one point in his(still young)life embraced the mullet ! !

rockdoc, I was wondering about that Dreaming pick - whether you meant the Kate Bush album. Easily her most interesting, varied album, but I never saw anyone peg it in a list as her best work before. Great choice.
Which is it then Rush fans? 2112 (thorn) or Moving Pictures (Riley, drum)? And how to get past the guy's voice....

Hey, I had 2112, too! (Fly By Night and Farewell to Kings were in the runing).
It will probably have enough votes to get it on the list in a respectable slot, I think.

thanx Riley I too had a mullet ;D Well Jesus, if I had my way, I would list no less than half a dozen RUSH albums. I only picked 2112 as a kind of "commonly consented upon" album, a rather "definitive" release of theirs, if you will. Certainly not my *personal* favorite, which, actually, is an impossible thing for me to decide upon. The following RUSH albums I personally consider to be all TIED FOR #1: ~Caress Of Steel ~Farewell To Kings ~Hemispheres ~2112 ~Moving Pictures ~Permanent Waves ~Signals ~Grace Under Pressure ~Vapor Trails Shiiiiiiiiiit, ONE more and I'd have *10* Rush albums all vying for 1st place . . . . Hell, I forgot FLY BY NIGHT!!!! There you have it: The 10 Best Rush Albums . . . and they ALL KICK ASS!!

For The Record:
I am VERY happy with MOVING PICTURES as "THE" definitive Rush album, or, if you'd rather, the *koff* "BEST" album out of their illustrious career. MOving Pictures has it all. Such an influential album, too. Not a bad track on it. I concede to those who voted for it: nice work.

Jesus -- there's no way to get past Geddy Lee's voice. That said, it was worse on the older albums (i.e. 2112, Fly By Night, etc.). If I remember rightly, Moving Pictures is mostly sung with less than a banshee wail. In fact, a couple of those tracks are instrumentals, which is really the best way to listen to Rush (no pretentious lyrics, no wailing vocals). Moving Pictures is about as good as prog-rock gets.
And I am definitely NOT a Rush fan by any means, but my older brother was, and I had friends in high school who were. I'm not afraid to acknowledge a killer single either, such as Spirit of the Radio.
I'll get started on the scoring later today, I think. Expect final results some time on Friday or Saturday. And expect lots of albums to only appear on one or two lists. Concensus? We don't need no stinkin' concensus!

Wait a minute. I just listened to Bummed for the first time in about 2 years, and for some reason it was fucking shite. Obviously my taste has changed radically, and I can't keep it high in my list on nostalgia alone, so if you do get chance to make the slight adjustment Ken, here it is. No worries though.
1. OK Computer - Radiohead 2. Aenima - TOOL 3. The Queen Is Dead - The Smiths 4. The Smiths - The Smiths 5. The Bends - Radiohead 6. The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses 7. Unknown Pleasures - Joy Division 8. VU & Nico - The Velvet Underground 9. Turn on the Bright Lights - Interpol 10. Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness - Smashing Pumpkins 11. Blood on the Tracks - Bob Dylan 12. Angel Dust - Faith No More 13. Urban Hymns - The Verve 14. Elizium - FIelds of the Nephilim 15. Definitely Maybe - Oasis 16. Funeral - Arcade Fire 17. To Bring You My Love - PJ Harvey 18. Disintegration - The Cure 19. Superunknown - Soundgarden 20. Agaetis Byrjun - Sigur Ros 21. The Nephilim - Fields of the Nephilim 22. XTRMNTR - Primal Scream 23. Kid A - Radiohead 24. Lift Yr Skinny Fists... GYBE 25. First & Last & Always - Sisters of Mercy
Btw, Bonnie Prince Billy's album I See A Darkness was only left off to see if I still rate it so highly in 6 months or so. I can see why it got the mythical 10.0 on Pitchfork though. A wonderful, wonderful album. When you see tautology you surely know I've got a lapful of sperm.

Jesus -- I've put your new list into the spreadsheet ... as of now, I believe that I've got better than 370 different albums that were nominated for this list. This is gonna take a while to add up ... and my early money is on London Calling or VU and Nico to take the top spot, but there are several others that look to be in the running as well.
