Although I dig alot of their other stuff, BSSM is so far ahead of the rest it's really no contest for me. And, wouldn't you know, the poll is turning out that way too.

I was actually listening to BSSM yesterday. Damn that album is good. Easily their finest moment. I didn't even press the skip button, not once. I only pressed 'stop' once the pointless little doodle of a closing track kicked in.
I also love the way the album is sequenced and how one song flows right into the next. "Suck My Kiss" is still my favourite song of theirs EVER, with "Could have Lied" coming in a close second. I wonder why they never released that as a single. Or did they?
The only track I'm kinda tired of now is "Give It Away". Not that it isn't a fine song, just a tad bit overplayed.

I'm not really a fan, but IMO their last two albums (Californication and By the Way) are their best to date. BSSM is waaaaaaay erratic (IMHO it's the classic argument that LPs were better than CDs, simply b/c they MADE artists edit themselves, at least to a degree).
Californication and BTW are the only RCHP albums that don't cry out for intoxicants and lots of sweaty bodies to be fully appreciated. Not that that's in all ways an improvement, but considering I've had to swear off the former, and haven't had much luck with the latter lately, well there you have it.

It looks like the new double-album coming out next month will actually have 28 tracks!
From their official website...
The 28-track, two-disc epic is out on May 9, trimmed down from the original plan of a 38-song trilogy. The discs are entitled 'Jupiter' and 'Mars' respectively.
Stadium Arcadium's Jupiter CD track listing comprises: "Dani California," "Snow (Hey Oh)," "Charlie," "Stadium Arcadium," "Hump de Bump," "She's Only 18," "Slow Cheetah," "Torture Me," "Strip My Mind," "Especially in Michigan," "Warlocks," "C'mon Girl," "Wet Sand" and "Hey."
Stadium Arcadium's Mars CD track listing comprises: "Desecration Smile," "Tell Me Baby," "Hard to Concentrate," "21st Century," "She Looks to Me," "Readymade," "If," "Make You Feel Better," "Animal Bar," "So Much I," "Storm in a Teacup," "We Believe," "Turn It Again" and "Death of a Martian."
I'm starting to think that maybe it is too much music to digest. I'll probably listen to one disc until I've worn it out and then pop in the other one and it'll seem like a fresh album.

"Dani California" has to be the one of the coolest songs released this year so far. And that video has to be one of the funniest I've seen in a long time. The 80's hair-band part is the best where the drummer points his drumstick into the camera, in classic Tommy Lee fashion.
Needless to say, I can't wait for the album.

Hmmm...got into an argument with a friend and his girlfriend yesterday about the new Chili Peppers track. Where I think it's the best song they've done in a long time, discounting "Scar Tissue" because I didn't really like Californication, they don't. But I'm pretty sure I'm right. I may have to check out this new one, though I was pretty certain they lost me after By the Way.

I think the new single is crap to be honest. I think these guys have lost all semblance of balls and credibility. John's still one of of the best guitarists in modern rock, but this track sounds like one more step in the over produced single friendly direction they headed towards with Californication. I have no problem with them writing hits for cash. I have no problem with them dispensing with the grit and maturing to the point where they don't sing about panties anymore. I'm just not interested. Listen to "Suck My Kiss", "Knock Me Down" or "Warped" and everything new just sounds uneventful. For my money these guys are done man. Sad but true.

Maybe the bigger question is whether you can get older as artists and still be hungry? In fairness RHCP aren't alone where lazy and uninspired older bands go.

I think you're a bit harsh there Riley. If anything, the Peppers have evolved. I like the fact that they don't insist on still doing the pseudo-funk thing and singing about partying on pussies [although some of it was fantasic. "Suck My Kiss" is still the coolest song they ever did]. You want lazy and uninspired? Check out U2 and REM.
I can understand where you're coming from though. Some people just prefer their older, more 'fun' stuff. Such is the case with most bands that have been around for 20+ years. I became a fan with BSSM and have never even bothered checking out the back catalogue... although I do plan on buying "Mother's Milk" some time in the future. I love "Knock Me Down" and that Stevie Wonder cover.

Personally I think the RHCPs are better then they've ever been...light years ahead of anything before Mother's Milk. They've become a singles band which is fine by me. If I remeber correctly, as it's been a long time since I've listened to entire RHCP album that wasn't a best of or live, all their album have a fair amount of crap on them so it's just as well really.
