Don't know why we don't talk about these guys- my second favorite band of all time- that much anymore. They're still extremely relevant, they still rock, Flea can still play like nobody's businessand Anthony Kiedis still bangs supermodels. And as far as bands who remained kickass through the 80s, 90s, and today, they fucking OWN U2. Ha!
They've got a new album coming out very soon, too, so maybe we can generate some discussion of that here?
My vote goes toward BSSM. Far and away. Here's my rankings.
8. s/t 7. Californication 6. Freakey Styley 5. Mother's Milk 4. By the Way 3. One Hot Minute 2. Uplift Mofo Party Plan 1. BSSM

I like that y'all have One Hot Minute in the upper teir....That's probably my third favorite as well. Very underrated/overlooked album.

Yeah, that one doesn't have a weak track on it either, and "Shallow Be Thy Game" is one of my favorites over all. That album is unfairly slagged.

Yup. Like we've said before, One Hot Minute is an incredible album and its only flaw is that Navarro is not a Chili Pepper. Also, it was the long-awaited follow-up to BSSM, so expectations were through the roof. I absolutely love that album, though. It came out in October '95, the same month as the Pumpkins' Mellon Collie. I got them both for my birthday. Good shit.
Californication, I really like it and all, but it's just not as good as the others to me. Some excellent, excellent singles on there, and I hate how overplayed they got. But I think By the Way outdoes it in every respect. To me, Mother's Millk is to BSSM as Californication is to By the Way.
So yeah, unless I have a craving for "I Like Dirt" or "Parallel Universe", I just find it more fulfilling to pop in By the Way.

I was listening to BSSM recently on a trip back to my hometown, and thought it was kinda cool to remember how at one point, at 13 years old, I sincerely felt that "Sir Psycho Sexy" was the absolute, undeniable pinnacle of genius in music.

Is it wrong that I still think of it that way?

It's still got a lot going for it. The pure sexuality and crude fucking stories, and then the completely soft emotion they throw in. And the little instrumental bit at the end. There's so much different emotion thrown into that song, and the length and complexity of it flow so perfectly. So yeah...it's still okay.

For such a crude song, it really is rather great musically. One of the more complex compositions on that album really. And the lyrics are actually quite clever.
The last time I saw them live (wow, it's been a while...August '00?) they played it in the encore, and it was pretty awesome seeing several thousand people (probably more than half of them women) standing up and yelling "I said 'What's up? Now suck my dick!'"

The tour with Snoop Dogg...when was that? It was the last time I saw them. A bit disappointed by the lack of old shit they played, but everything they hit was fucking awesome.
On my road trip to the hometown, I also heard "Apache Rose Peacock" for the first time in a LONG time, and realized that somehow that song didn't make it onto a single one of my N.O. mixes around Katrina. I dunno how I forgot that thing.
Some douche on the new RS boards claims that he's got three leaked RHCP songs off the new album. Could this be? I haven't heard anything about it, and I don't have any song titles to do any searching with.

I haven't heard a thing about a new album, as far as song titles or even a release date. I have no idea how much of it is recorded or anything. But I'm inclined to think that guy is full of crap. What titles did he list?
I saw them three times. The first was on the One Hot Minute tour, with Dave Navarro on guitar. I was a brand new fan, and a friend brought me into a luxery suite at the Palace of Auburn Hills. Actually closer to the stage than those suites usually are. The Toadies opened. It was a hell of a show, and I still strongly remember a lot of the OHM songs they did that they haven't done since and probably never will. At the time it didn't seem that way, but it was probably a pretty unique show as far as their whole career goes.
The second time was even more special. In the wake of Columbine, the Chili Peppers did a short tour of small venues, and the only way to get tickets was to win them, high school students only. So I saw them at Clutch Cargo (a 1500 capacity former church in Pontiac, MI). I was right up on the floor of this amazing venue with stained glass windows and everything. No opening band. They played a lot of songs that were going to be on Californication, which was to be released I think a week or two later. Quite amazing to be that close to the band in such a small venue. This was right when Kiedis cut his hair and had it all bleached, which surprised the hell out of everyone there when he jumped out from behind an amp at the start of "Around the World". Mostly stuff from Californication and BSSM, but with a few older ones thrown in ("Me and My Friends", "Green Heaven", "Police Helicopter") and they ended it with a cover of "Search and Destroy". The show ended early while it was still light outside, so we hung out and watched them get onto the bus like the silly fanboys we were. The best part of that was an old Buick with two old people in it driving up behind the bus. The old man driving gets out and gets in the back seat, and Chad Smith climbs into the driver's seat and drives off. Must have been his parents as I know he grew up in the area.
The third one was a year and a half later on the official Californication tour. It was at Pine Knob (now the DTE Energy Music Theater) in Clarkston, MI. Normally one of my least favorite venues (one of those big, characterless outdoor amphitheaters), and we were near the back of the pavilion, but it was awesome anyway. Openers were Fishbone and Stone Temple Pilots! Again mostly stuff from Californication and some of the more beloved tracks BSSM, but a couple surprises such as "Blackeyed Blonde", "Subterreanean Homesick Blues", "They're Red Hot", "Pea"...yeah, that was fucking sweet.
I regret not seeing them on the By the Way tour, especially since they came to town with Queens of the Stone Age, but I was broke at the time.

Gimme early Peppers, as I believe from BSSM they started to sound less interesting for me- but then I saw them during the Mofo world tour and they kicked ass! I just had such mixed feelings when BloodSugarSexMagic came out, as the uptempo stuff was really good but the slower material just grated me- I don't like Under The Bridge! And what followed after that was even less inspiring! I wished George Clinton had grabbed Kiedis & co by the balls and put them on a strict funk exercise diet so they's started to get more into that early groove again. So my listing goes:
1. Uplift Mofo Party Plan 2. Freakey Styley 3. One Hot Minute 4. The Red Hot Chili Peppers 5. BSSM 6. By the Way 7. Californication 8. Mother's Milk
Just my opinion. But when I saw them at Lorelei in Germany in 1985 they blew my brains out.

Maarts, you old bastard, I'm extremely jealous you got to see them back then.
Rocky, I dunno what the name of the tracks this boob on RS "downloaded" were. I don't really have the energy to go over there and try to ask him, either. That place is a mess.
maarts, I think the Peppers either could have called it a day or moved on to more mellow territory like they've done. I'm glad they moved on, but I'd rather have seen them call it quits then be a bunch of washed-up old guys running around with socks on their wieners. They'd be as sad as the Beastie Boys.
