I think Weeping is right. Edit: "Who Loves the Sun"/"Oh! Sweet Nuthin'" was the only American single, but there was a UK "Sweet Jane"/"Rock and Roll" single, although for some reason it didn't come out until 1973. members.aol.com/olandem3/odsingle.html

Ken - Awesome awesome awesome. Thanks! I didn't want to have to settle for "The Kids are Alright." Not that I'd really be settling on such a great song, but "Love Reign O'er Me" is far far superior to the entire Who catalogue...oh yeah, you know it.

One Tree Hill was a single?
Great lists though ... I just may have "Born to Run" at #1 as well, frag. In fact, there's darn little on your list I'd change. Some great picks there as well, RocDoc.

Were "All Apologies" & "Immortality" officially released as singles?
Are we including the Mo-Town/Soul/Funk scene here as well? I've been making my list not including the Temptations, Ottis Redding, James Brown, The Four Tops, etc....If so, that changes everything. I've been staying strictly to Rock N' Roll/Hard Rock/Classic Rock

I've been staying strictly to Rock N' Roll/Hard Rock/Classic Rock The category is really as broad/narrow as you make the term "rock and roll." Personally, I'll have at least a few classic Motown cuts, b/c those fall into my own definition of rock and roll. And certainly "Dock of the Bay" qualifies as rock and roll in my book.

Paul - "Immortality" was released as a single with the b-side of "Rearviewmirror," as covered by The Frogs. And "All Apologies" was released with "Rape Me" and "Moist Vagina." I'm pretty sure it wasn't a US release, but "Immortality" was.
And yeah, I avoided Motown releases too, but like Ken, I think "Dock of the Bay" is definitely a rock song.
Also tried to include some more modern songs...maybe not so wise, but oh well...

Remember, it doesn't have to have been a single in the US -- Great Britain, or most any "Western" country will do as well. So all Kiwis, Aussies, expatrioted Dutchmen, etc. here can use your own country's charts/releases as well as those of the US and UK. I'm pretty sure the Beatles used this trick to add at least one track to the Ones collection, seems like one of those songs was only number one in Norway or Denmark or some such thing.
C'mon Tunes, you can't bail on this! If nothing else, just take the first 50 that come to mind ... hell, that's what I may wind up doing anyway!

First 50 (however many I wrote...) that came to mind which I felt had significant airplay (indicating to me that they probably were 'singles' or then just shoulda been...like One Tree Hill, a huge favorite for me) and which made a big impression on me.
Singles as a concept are closely inter-related to a particular time for me, in explanation of why my list is majority 'oldies'...but they're ALL great significant tunes!
That local (but charted #1 NATIONALLY) version of 'Gloria' always gave me chills when it came on...and Tambourine Man! I remember standing in the grade school playground with 3 or 4 of my little buddies with our 8-transistor radios cranked, groovin to that song...!

Oh yeah...and we've pretty much all had different Stones songs, so far. I think "Satisfaction" and "Paint it Black" were the only ones repeated. Dylan too. Guess that happens when you've been around for nearly half a century...
