Yeah, that Cornell picture was about the most early 90s thing I've ever seen. It's embarrassing that PJ ever even made a shirt like that. Cool to look back at, though. ah! THAT's the Cornell we all know 'n love!! I could almost hear 'em screamin' out "Loud Love" in that pic! Cool shot of Joy Division and the one sweaty Pete Garrett! What's cracked me up most tho' for the day was I believe Thony's tossing in the Caddyshack gopher -- fuckin' classic!

I remember Mazeppa, Jac! Used to stay up late to watch the horror flicks when I was a kid in Tulsa. Back in the day when an unknown Gary Busey used to appear in the skits as Teddy Jack Eddy! Wow! That is SO cool! I didn't know you'd grown up in Oklahoma! Yeah, I have always been a fan of Gary Busey, based solely on his work as Teddy Jack Eddy on the Uncanny Film Festival! He was HILARIOUS! Pure psycho! Sartain sells VHS & DVD highlights of the skits they did on that show on the internet, but the prices are a bit steep for me to shell out for them...and yet, I cannot think of any DVD I would rather have right now than one of those! What memories that would bring back, even though I was just a youngster when I stayed up late to catch the horror flicks myself... If you're interested, here's some web junk from a website called Tulsa TV Memories that has a 3 page spread on the old Mazeppa lunacy... www.tulsatvmemories.com/mazeppa.html

Great stuff, Jac! I've often told people about where I'd seen Mazeppa [later character actor and Hee-Haw regular] and Busey first - I didn't realize there was such a cult interest (well deserved). I lived in Tulsa as a kid for about a year and then again much later as an adult for another year.
Here's a laugh: when I went to find campy pics of 70s teen idol bands, the photos of the Osmond Brothers, the Monkees, and Bobby Sherman at their sites were right-click protected! Yeah, like I'm going to make a fortune selling bootleg pictures of the Osmond Brothers and Bobby Sherman out of the trunk of my car!

I appreciated your pics of the classic Tele, and the very well-worn classic Strat, achn2b! The Ric and the Gibson 335 were also nice. As was Paul's SG.
If I want the double-coil, humbucker chunk sound, I'll go with the SG every time - the Les Paul is just too heavy to play for very long. Most times, I'll go for the classic single-coil sound of the Strat... I guess they don't call me 'strat' for nothin'.
btw, achn2b, do you have another moniker you like, or shall I always remember you as "Aknib"? (Is it like, 'aching to be'?)

Hey achn, love your icons post. Not (too) far off mine ... though I'd probably have added a shot of Greg LeMond at the TdeF as well ... and a Porsche to go along with the 'stang.

J a c k L e m m o n ! yeah, good thought there (was it r.i.t.?) --- one of my favorite actors and so often ignored among the other greats!
...and "Achin' To Be" is a GREAT fine Replacements tune

I put Lemmon there. He's probably got to be my favorite actor ever since I saw him in The Apartment.

Ditto on "The Apartment" -- easily in my Top 10 films. Lemmon usually seemed SO at ease within his characters, something that he carried well into his acting even later in his career; "Glengarry Glen Ross" comes to mind as another stellar performance.
Have to also then give you props Fuzz for the 'Mingus Montage' put up today -- one of the true badass mo'fo's. I just happened to think right now too that I can't recall ever seen footage of him playing....static photo's are one thing, can't imagine taking him in action but bet that he was one concentrating player that made facial expressions worthy of Buddy Rich.

I've been going through sort of a jazz phase lately, and Mingus is definitely becoming one of my favorites. I've listened to Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus twice already this morning. There's just such raw emotion in every aspect of his music. He can be ferocious and tender in the same phrase and it all just blends perfectly. There aren't too many people I usually call a "genius," but he is surely one of them.

"Mingus 5" is one essential purchase (the other being "Mingus Ah Um") but especially for II B.S. which is probably my favorite cut by him. I'll have to check out the site -- DID read a biography on him a few years back, "Myself When I Am Real." He had an incredible temperment with his music AND towards those in his band. He was known for actually firing a musician right onstage in the midst of a performance if the dude was hittin' it just right! JAC! Flippin' NIGHT FLIGHT[/i] !!! Forget if it was a 2 or 4 hour show but that was the best eclectic music/entertainment late night programming around. You'd have cutting edge video one moment and then the old b&w "Showtime At The Apollo" next! Here's a link that has some good memories about it: www.jumptheshark.com/n/nightflight.htmOh, and I actually have that "National Lampoon" issue sitting in a drawer about 5' from me. Probably a "Creem" or two in there as well.
