I can't believe there's so much praise here for "Losing My Religion". One of the most annoying songs I've ever heard.

gotta go with the 'love' losing my religion cadre...adore that song...never tire of it.......and for some gawd-forsaken reason it's on the same LP as shiny happy people!!!!!

If I were forced to choose to listen to either 'Losing My Religion' or 'Shiny Happy People' for a full 24 hours non-stop, I'd take 'Shiny' in a heartbeat. Even if it's not one of their finer moments, it's nowhere near as annoying as LMR. And it's got Kate Pierson, who is always a blast to listen to. As for my favourite 'Out Of Time' moment, I'd go with a song nobody here has mentioned yet. 'Low'. Love it, even if it's got that Doors 'The End' vibe to it. Anyone else notice how even his vocals sound similar to Morrison's on that one?

I hate to admit it, but I always get Document, Murmur, Fables, Life's Rich Pageant and Reckoning mixed up. I can never remember which songs are on which album, so I always have to check. So embarrassing. Same problem here, apart from 'Murmur' which, I think, is the only REM album I don't own. Of course "The One I Love" being the only exception. I know it's from Document because I used to listen to it quite often. Damn, I love that song! One of their finest moments, up there with 'Drive'.

Yep, it definitely is the only one I don't own after looking at that list. I think 'Radio Free Europe' is the only song I'm familiar with on that album. I don't have 'Dead Letter Office' either, although I suppose that doesn't really count.
I must say, I am tempted to pick up 'Murmur', especially after the fact 3 people here voted for it as REM's finest work.

"Country Feedback" is Out of Time's saving grace, IMO. It's the only thing on the whole album that I really, really like ("Losing My Religion" is okay, but the excessive mandolin bugs me...I also think "Belong" is pretty good, but the rest of that album is forgettable).
I really loathe "Drive", although I heard an arrangement they were doing during the Up tour that rocked it out a little bit and it wasn't half bad... The band I was in when AFTP first came out worked up a cover of "Drive" and had it ready to go within a week or so of the album's release.
I think "Sweetness Follows" may be the best song on AFTP...really love how Cameron Crowe used it in Vanilla Sky.

I don't have 'Dead Letter Office' either, although I suppose that doesn't really count. Doesn't really count? Oh, I don't know about that...some excellent songs there, not to mention that the ESSENTIAL Chronic Town is a part of the package. Even on it's own merits, though, DLO has some great moments ("Crazy", "Bandwagon", I still prefer "Voice of Harold" to it's doppelganger, "Seven Chinese Bros.")... Even Eponymous is worth having for the Hibtone original of "Radio Free Europe" (though I sure would have liked to have heard the B-side of that single there, I think it was "Sitting Still") and "Romance"...

I'm beginning to wish that I'd voted for Murmer rather than AFTP as well. Not b/c ATFP isn't a great record, but b/c Murmer is such a singular achievement. Not only did it sound like nothing before it in rock, nothing after it sounds like this, either. Not even the next couple of R.E.M. albums. Murmer just sort of appeared in stores in the summer of '83 with almost no notice or warning, and in a quiet but persistent way, it just demanded to be heard. I had friends who liked a bunch of crap (Ratt, Motley Crue, etc.), but who loved Murmer. I was into punk, but also found Stipe's mumblings and the band's jangling but still cloudy absolutely entrancing.
If you're only going to own one R.E.M. album, it really should be Murmer.
And once you've fallen in love with it, then you need to pick up Dead Letter Office so you can have their stunning debut EP, Chronic Town. Every bit as good as Murmer. Put those two together on one cd, and you'd have the finest debut in rock.

Ken, I don't own the album but I think it's spelled Murm ur. Normally I don't correct spelling, but hey, weren't you the one who 'corrected' someone's apostrophe in 'Life 's Rich Pageant'? btw, how could you notice such a thing? Shouldn't that be the correct spelling to begin with? I don't get it... You're right of course, that's how it appears on the album, I just find it odd that you would pick up on such a minor detail.
