If our top 25 Albums in Rock is any indicator, Achtung will run away with this one. I hope not, as Joshua Tree gets my vote.

Achtung Baby!
By a huge margin ... as much as I love U2, this is their best album, start to finish, by a clear margin. FWIW, here's how I'd rank them right now ...
1. Achtung Baby. 2. War. 3. Zooropa. 4. Boy. 5. All That You Can't Leave Behind. (I like this record. I really really like it. That's why it's up this high). 6. The Joshua Tree. (The good stuff is soooooo good, it more than balances out the bad). 7. Pop. (See previous entry, just there's a bit more bad stuff. But "Gone" is one of their top five tunes). 8. The Unforgettable Fire. 9. How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb. (Vertigo is mediocre, and there's some poor stuff towards the end. Real solid in the middle though). 10. October. 11. Rattle and Hum. (A near- unmitigated disaster. This was a two-LP set, and there's a single side of material here that's worth hearing).

Unforgettable Fire.
After that, I would only really listen to Achtung Baby and War. I'm sure I've said this on about 7 threads recently. Are we talking about U2 everywhere?

Ken's got a pretty good list except that Zooropa is a horrible peice of crap and Unforgettable Fire is better then Boy, it's probably about equal with War.

I love the best parts of The Unforgettable Fire, but the crap on there is really awful. Indian Summer Sky is a really horrible song, as is Elvis Presley and America (that one should have stayed off the album and been released as a b-side, etc.), Promenade is unrealized filler, as are both 4th of July and MLK. The rest of the record is awfully good, though, and even better live. Hearing MLK/The Unforgettable Fire as the first encore in the Joshua Tree show I saw back in '87 was absolutely heart-stopping, and Pride is one of the all-time great rock anthems.

MLK filler??? I couldn't disagree with you more, Ken. It's a surefire stargazer-song, a simple little lullaby for the ages that really touched me the first time I heard it. I have associations with a lot of songs from U2 but this one is the tenderest. Live the version of Bad as played at Live Aid is probably my all time favourite U2-song. Much of The Unforgettable Fire still sounds goog, especially A Sort Of Homecoming and the title track. Elvis Presley & America is just unforgettably sad.
For me Achtung Baby is just a hodgepodge of DJ-orientated rock- lord, those remixed B-sides! with a handful of melodies and the ego-level on 10. Sorry, it never will be my favourite album. I even prefer the much maligned Rattle And Hum over it as the steps into gospel and rock are much more convincing than what the band achieved later on.
Just my two pence.

you know how most everyone loves REM"s 'Automatic for the People' and U2's "Achtung Baby"..?...well I realize whilst both of those are worthy works in their impressive cannon's, I still default to the initial or early output..so I voted for War (with Unforgettable Fire and ATYCLB following) insofar I saw U2 (with Bowie and Pretenders) at the US festival that year (1983) and they were really making strides then....true it's kinda "concession' to stadium-rock but that album was pure Springsteenian-anthem like......and for REM I tend to default to Murmer/Reckoning, etc.....
I think I initially get very excited about an artist and tend to gravitated towards their earlier works, and though I will still 'like' some of their subsequent output (Costello--Blood and Chocolate; Jam--The gift; Clash--Combat Rock; REM--Reveal; U2--How to dismantle...) it is generally the earlier age 20-fueled rock that kickstarted their career that most galvanizes me......
again, I have loved later works by elder spokesman of late such as Neil young, Paul Weller, Ray Davies, etc.....but when it comes to 'groups' generally it's the initial works I prefer the best....

Not that I don't love The Unforgettable Fire. I just think that besides the track, "The Unforgettable Fire" the rest of the album is mediocre. Actually, "With Or Without You" is the only U2 song I like better than that song.
