Let me know who I left off. I can't explain how hard it is for me to pick between the Junkies and Mazzy Star, but I went with Mazzy somehow. Btw, some of the best songs ever sung by a female are sung by one Kim Gordon, if you ask me.

S-K are easily the best band here, so they've got my vote. After them, ummmm, I'd probably go with Ms. Merchant and her band of Maniacs, though it is a tough call all around.

Stll can't listen to Sleater-Kinney. Dunno, this kind of slightish a-tonal grind just doen't do it for me at all anymore. Have the same thing with things like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Be Your Own Pet. Love Mazzy but it's sometimes so narcoleptic it's not safe to put it on during driving. Junkies are grand but Margo Timmins does the same thing with her husky voice. Love Natalie Merchant and I hope to catch her live solo soon. I think I'd put Cocteau Twins on top here but, taking the fine bands here my vote goes to The Sundays.
Agree on Kim Gordon- together with Kim Deal they vocalise the best songs for their bands.

Blondie and Garbage are missing from that list.
I'd like to vote, but I don't actually own records by any of those artists so I can't really have an opinion here.

I'd probably put Blondie above S-K, but then again, Blondie never cut a record as good as Dig Me Out.
Since the poll said "best band" and not "best female singer" I think I've still got to go with S-K. But the Pretenders would win my vote if they were on here.

A few more choices to consider ...
ABBA (Phil knows this list wouldn't be complete w/o them) ;D B-52's Eurythmics Bangles Go-Go's Cranberries Everything But the Girl Human League Jefferson Airplane The Mamma's and the Pappa's No Doubt (just for Bowiglou!) ;D X (who ARE the best band with a female singer) X-Ray Spex
And what about The Velvet Underground and Nico? Or Sonic Youth?

I don't think they'd qualify as bands with chick singers- part-time chick singers, yes.
Do you think that the appeal of Kim Gordon/Deal is that they only sporadically do vocals for their bands and that their impact's just mainly due to the fact that you're so used hearing Thurston/Frank Black doing the lead vocals?

Yeah, I think that part of what makes the Pixies and Sonic Youth work is the contrast between vocalists. They take the gruff front-man/whiny second vocalist to it's logical conclusion. It's like Mick and Keef (or Joe and Mick), but to an even greater extreme. X, on the other hand, definitely belong in this category IMHO. Exene was the lead singer, and John Doe was the bass player and second vocalist. I think you've got to look at them as a band with a female lead singer. And X were (and still are) the best band mentioned here. Of course, IMHO X are one of the very best American bands with any singer, so of course I'd think this way.

X should be in this poll and therefore be the winner but I'll go with Sleater-Kinney.

Hey Achn! How's it going!
Pretenders are right up there, but I still would have to give it to X.

Don't forget Fleetwood Mac ...
Christine McVie and Stevie Nicks certainly qualified as female singers ...ÔÔ...
Not so sure about those two Abba singers until I see some urine test results ... !!
