Like her or not, it was Janis Joplin who opened the door of Rock 'n' Roll for women ... And she did it by being herself, authenticaly excessive and raw as far away emotionaly speaking as most of the female performers now ... Don't forget, she also opened the door of Rock 'n Roll to female impersonators too.

~I can't believe Patti Smith Group wasn't a choice ~I can't believe Portishead wasn't a choice ~I can't believe Diamanda Galas wasn't a choice ~I'm just kidding about that ~Where in the hell are 4 Non Blondes ~Where is Romeo Void, this is getting ridiculous ~The exclusion of Bow Wow Wow hurts ~Has everyone but me forgotten about that hottie in Berlin? ~Two words: Amy Nausea *bitches* ~HEART used to be a pretty damn decent band ~L7, anyone? ~Where are The Nuns? Seriously . . . this sux ~Ok, At least HOLE ain't on here... ~Brody Armstrong. *THE DISTILLERS* *Grrrr* ~*The Plasmatics*, anyone? Wendy O. Rocked, that is all.
That said, I did my part in this poll by making sure Exene Cervenka of X got a little push to help tie up w/the equally amazing & deserving Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders.
It was certainly a close -call . . . but I had to go w/ X, because I really think they deserve the recognition for the legacy they carved.
Rock on

Good call there ThornY! Excellent post, too, BTW.
It's really a tough choice between Chrissie and X, but damn those first four X albums are just about impossible to top.

Yeah, not to mention how hugely influential X were . . . and continue to be, to this day . . . (not that The Pretenders aren't w/out their own influence, but if I had to take a wild guess, I'd say X influenced more generations of bands).

I know about 10 times more music than most people I know. Compared to you guys, I know nothing. That's why I hang out here so much.

I voted for Blondie. The first real frontwoman for a pop/rock band. Debbie Harry paved the way for so many others that followed. She was also my first rock n' roll crush. What about Grace Slick fronting Jefferson Airplane? Janis Joplin with Big Brother and the Holding Company? Phil's favorite Swedish export, ABBA? Patti Smith Group? I love Debbie, but I think saying "first real frontwoman" might be pushing it more than a bit. I didn't word that properly. Granted, Debbie wasn't the first frontwoman, she was just the first frontwoman who was sexy too. All those chicks you mentioned were ugly as fuck...

Does that make you cringe Mr. Holzman? Manzerak was (is) a horrible rock keyboard player, who was in a really bad band backing up an incredibly pretentious narcisistic hack ... but he's not a bad producer! I guess that just further proves the old adage about those who can't do ... Seriously, Manzerak did do a fine job producing those first three X records, and gets bonus points with me for noticing the band in the first place and helping them get media attention. X were never big stars, but they sold a hell of a lot more records than many of their contemporaries (for example, every band listed in the "last American band to get played on the radio" section of I Must Not Think Bad Thoughts), and part of that was b/c of the association with Manzerak. Shit, Sandy Pearlman produced Give 'Em Enough Rope, and that's got some of my favorite Clash songs on it! Producer is a very different job than performer.
