Semisonic had "Secret Smile", which is a fucking classic. The rest was trash, though.
"The Way" was a great song. Heard that on the audio before some band got on stage this past weekend at Bonnaroo. I remember the rest being crap, though.

"Out of My Head" was sweeeeeeeeeet.
I don't think I've ever heard "Secret Smile". Or even heard of it. All I know of Semisonic is "Closing Time", and that song made me want to gouge my eyes out.

You've probably heard it, but had no idea who it was, because it's an awesome song and it's hard to believe the same guys wrote "Closing Time" and the rest of their shitty catalogue.

I really don't think I have. It's possible that even if it was friggin' huge in one part of the country that it didn't get a bit of play somewhere else.

That Fastball album that had "The Way" on it was actually pretty good ... Sgt. Rutter gave it five stars, which was a bit generous IMHO, but it was a fine unpretentious power-pop record. Catchy as hell.

I just thought this board might have a little bit better taste than the mainstream... So stereolab's retrospective is being released on Rhino Records, huh. I guess that's all we need to know... Radiohead = mainstream - ? Well, sure. But so were the friggin BEATLES. get a grip, wagey. " a little better taste than the mainstream", what kind of statement is that, pauled? I for one (who busily scourges the depths of the underground) can state with a straight face that the mainstream has and always shall continue to provide human ears with the very best of the best that musical artistry has to offer. It's part of the reason such bands GET to the mainstream: sheer, unadulterated TALENT. Just think: Fleetwood Mac. Pearl Jam. Smashing Pumpkins. Pink Floyd. Led Zeppelin. And yes, RADIOHEAD. Plus far too many others to list here. The point is (once again; it sure becomes tiresome having to point out to you the subtle distinctions contained within the spectrum of reality) that nothing is as black and white as you seem to always profess is the case.

Really, from about 1995 on, the list is pretty crappy. In 1995, you've got Alanis Morrisette, the Goo Goo Dolls, Presidents of The United States Of America, Bush, Soul Asylum, et al. The best thing on the list is a song from a Batman soundtrack.

I liked Semisonic better than Fastball, but I can't help but thinking hairs will be split if we turn the whole thing into a full on debate. Neither band is as good as Nada Surf.

Neither band is as good as Nada Surf. This is true.

I giggle everytime I imagine it's Riley in his avatar saying the things that he posts. I think Shin deftly made this point in another thread somewhere.

The difference with this avatar is I can't actually see you guys sitting at your computers posting. Some power just can't be mainatained over the long haul. Just as well. I was tired of seeing Luke with his cock in his hand all the time.

your 'host' avatar is the best yet. You've got the patented lounge-type host smirk down pat. It's not even a 'smirk', really - it's that lounge-host, heavy-lidded expression after 1 too many martinis, yet you're still live on camera. perfect.

Fastball? Semisonic? Nada Surf? What the hell is going on here?
"Secret Smile" was okay. I think they had another decent one too. "DND" maybe?
That Fastball song had a wicked bridge in it. Never heard the album.

You've probably heard it, but had no idea who it was, because it's an awesome song and it's hard to believe the same guys wrote "Closing Time" and the rest of their shitty catalogue. The drummer from that band (jason something I think) actually wrote a pretty entertaining book called 'So you wanna be a Rock-n-Roll star?" I hate that 'Closing Time' song, but I recommend the book none the less...

I would like to read that book, I have to buy it first and I haven't done that yet.
