As for Stars Doc, I agree there's a thread that ties the three discs together, not unlike The Weakerthans trilogy. For me the difference is still the wow factor. Stars make me think "wow I haven't heard anyone do that so well in a long long time. BSS make me think "wow I haven't heard anyone do anything quite that way before". The Weakerthans – there's another band that should have been mentioned a lot earlier in a thread like this… I take your last point there, Riley. I guess the thing for me is BSS pulls it off in a much more assured way on YFIIP. If they'd done the same again on Broken Social Scene I'd probably have a bit of a different take on the band. Though I agree, the Arts and Crafts collective is a national treasure and whether you go with Stars or BSS, "it's all good" definitely applies on this one. This post, esp. that last paragraph, makes me really curious about Stars ... while I don't like the Smiths, I almost invariably like bands that are compared to them, and I love Housemartins (and like the Trash Can Sinatras tracks I've heard, "Obscurity Knocks" was theirs, right?), so this is beginning to sound like a can't-miss recommendation to me! Start with Set Yourself On Fire, Ken. While you're there, pick up You Forgot It In People. Two 00s must haves.

i like broken social scene and arcade fire, but wolf parade does not do much for me. also, and i know this is blasphemy in the eyes of many, zepplin does not do much for me. maybe i never gave 'em a fair shake, but i was never tempted to do so. i guess i suck.

nice writeup there, Adam. I should look into Meshuggah more deeply. Only caught em live once - when they opened for TOOL - but we remained waaay in the back by the pretzel vendor while they played, and their sound was diffused far too much to properly appreciate it. My friends were like "man they suck", but I bit my tongue (cuz I knew better).
Like the time when I got back from the APC show where the Mars volta opened:
~If you asked my friends (or anyone who sat waaaay in the back of the arena), they'll all unanimously confirm "they sucked ass".
~If you asked me (or anyone else right up front where you could practically smell Cedric's breath), you'll get a completely, 100% polar opposite summation of their show. I.e, it was "Fucking stellar in every conceivable way".

I'd sure as hell stay away after a threat like that ... ... but the fact that I hate Led Zep (huuuuuuuuge critical blind spot there) is well known here.

Sleater-Kinney announced in the news today that:
"After eleven years as a band, Sleater-Kinney have decided to go on indefinite hiatus... The upcoming summer shows will be our last. As of now, there are no plans for future tours or recordings. We feel lucky to have had the support of many wonderful people over the years. We want to thank everyone who has worked with us, written kind words about us, performed with us, and inspired us."

I can't believe we have a thread about bands from the 00's and you fuckers still manage to bring the discussion around to fucking Led Zeppelin. Unbelievable.

The tendrils of their influence reach far into today, Riley.
but yeah, I hear ya. I remember their music getting old, oh, nearly 20 years ago already.
*sigh*

The only thing Broken Social Scene have in common with Zep is being dirty and scruffy.

No, the tendrils of their influence do not reach far into today.
I think I've spun BSS s/t more than I have YFIIP. I always convince myself it's the better album, but then I wind up popping YFIIP back in and remembering otherwise.
But shit, "Major Label Debut" through "It's All Gonna Break" is just a stream of modern pop classic after modern pop classic. And those first four songs hold up beautifully, as well. "It's All Gonna Break" in particular is amazing, and goes well with what Riley was saying about taking a perfect pop chorus and warping it into something greater.
The EP is spotty, but it's a fucking bonus EP.
I enjoyed the departure from focus that came with the album. Also makes for a much better stoner album than the debut. Not to mention it lacks the boring opener of YFIIP. And yeah, it's "something fresh", which you just don't find in rock anymore.
I get the same thrill out of BSS s/t as I did Mezzanine or XTRMNTR when I first heard them. Only I like this much, much better, as, well, it's a rock album.
/end random lines about my love for BSS.
Set Yourself On Fire is excellent, and I think Heart is almost as good. Gimme that second Novillero debut over either of them, though...
Not much of a Wolf Parade fan, but they're okay in spots, kinda like The Shins.

When Wolf Parade is on, they are very ON, but when they are a little off it can just make you shake your head and wonder if you are starting to slip in your listening tastes. I know I have thought that a couple of times.
