Tell you what Doc- ever since you recommended to follow the Flames to me as the hard-yakka-team of the NHL, they've gone a bit fromk strength to strength now haven't they?
Philemon definitely not coming back? C'est dommage! I wanted some chicken recipes off him.

Yeah maarts, no matter how things go from here on in, Calgary's done themselves proud. Really pulling for them to make it into the Cup final and go all the way! Tampa or Philly will be tough though, even if they do advance past San Jose.
I e-mailed Phil on Sunday. Haven't heard back yet, so he may be away.

Riley - Thanks for enlightening me with the origin of CanCon. Does that term refer to Canadian music only, or does it cover all things Canadian?
With regards to Mayumi Kojima, yeah, I can see how the Japanese-ness of her music can be both a turn off for the Western ear AND an interesting change from what they're normally accustomed to listening to. In ekul's case, it looks like it was the latter, but I'd be curious to find out how it sounds to Drum's ears.
Anyway, I'll be looking forward to that box set!

Ryosuke, the term CanCon represents the "folklorization", if that’s a word (it is now), of a government regulation. In January 1971 the federal government, through the Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications Commission (CTRC) instituted what are officially called Canadian Content Regulations. These regulations (still in force) require Canadian radio stations to play at least 30% Canadian content between 6 a.m. and midnight. Songs that met the requirement became known as CanCon, so the term refers to music but over time just about any Canadian culture (or anything Canadian) came to be known as CanCon.
Mayumi Kojima - haven’t listened to the whole disc yet, Ryo, but I liked the few songs I did listen to. I’m actually liking the sound of Japanese vs. English within pop songs although it’s interesting that you mention that. My wife liked Sunny Day Service but she didn’t like the Mayumi Kojima songs we listened to basically for that very reason. Well, that and the fact that it's a female - she's kind of particular about women's voices.

These regulations (still in force) require Canadian radio stations to play at least 30% Canadian content between 6 a.m. and midnight. Which is part of the reason radios play the fuck out of Nickelback, Default and Theory Of A Deadman. People, especially impressionable young music fans, would like New Pornographers, Flashing Lights, Blurtonia, and Tangiers, if they ever fucking well got to hear them. We have a zillion great CanCon artists that would more than allow programmers to meet regulations, and just imagine, even break some new artists and expand their respective audiences. But no, let's push what's easy and then play old Guess Who and Bryan Adams songs when we run a little short on new crap. If it wasn't for you guys and the internet in general, I wouldn't know what to check out, because I sure as fuck wouldn't be listening to Canadian radio.

Sorry. Too much coffee. Too little sleep. No more rants today I promise.

Unless someone gets me started on The Eagles or Bon Jovi, then I can't be held accountable.

'Course I agree with all that, Riley. I'd love to hear Emm Gryner all over the radio as opposed to Celine or whatever but I still agree with the basic principle behind the CanCon regulations. I always liked the line by Greg Dymond and Geoff Pevere in Mondo Canuck that CanCon was "a shot of pure adrenaline" into what in 1971 was a pretty borderline Canadian music industry. Entertainment execs and programmers will always opt overwhelmingly for bland and safe; without CanCon they'd just replace Nickelback and the like with Creed or Korn or whatever. As it is, it's sort of like entertainment industries in other countries, the schlock more of less underwrites the cool stuff.
Bryan Adams, BTW, despises CanCon; called it the subsidization of of mediocrity or something to that effect. Gotta love the irony of that one on all counts.

Well part of that stems from being considered "un-Canadian" by CanCon standards after he wrote with British Shania beau Mutt Lange (I believe? - insert Def Leppard/Shanis/Mutt diss here).
You're correct Bryan. There's nothing particularly un-Canadian about your music. It's just particularly un-interesting and un-eventful.

Yeah. I read that on the Chart mag site yesterday. Not sure what to make of it honestly.
I kindo flike the idea that Rush never did covers, but it sounds like a bit of fun too. Especially "Mr. Soul" and "Shapes Of Things"
