I have no idea what to do with that Doc. I guess that's what makes it sort of cool. This rules. The Russian Futurists. "Paul Simon"

If anyone ever asked me what my favourite song of all time was, or at least my fave Canadian song, it would probably be this oneI've always been sympathetic to the idea that Rush isn't for everyone, rather than being one of those fanatical Rush people who try to convert to non-willing. This song however, just speaks to perfection. Geddy's vocals are in check, the riff is clean and warm, the sensibility is pop based at 4ish minutes, yet the depth of musicianship and structure is undeniably complex and thick. "Limelight" to me is a flawless song.

Anyone checked out the stream of The Hip’s new album? For better or worse, as dependably dependable as ever. Bob Rock deflects like a ringer off the crossbar. Classic first video, something they've actually been quite good at over the years: In View

I heard another track that was set to highlights on the first week of Hockey Night in Canada. "The Lonely End of The Rink" I think it was called. Pretty solid track. The most contemporarily aware they've been in a while. I like it. This track too. Even with Bob Rock.
Maybe he can ruin The Hip like he ruined Metallica.

I suspect the "modern" sound of this one has a little bit to do with working with Bob Rock... But when you think that right up to the present day they've always had such good taste in opening acts, for example – I don't think I'd want to throw that one at them... I was thinking more along the lines that on this record, like on everything they've done (and I imagine ever will do), The Hip sounds absolutely like The Hip. Doesn't matter what (or who) you throw at them.... It’s always ends up with "Hip" stamped all over it.
They never really stand still but they're never going to drop a Kid A on you either...
On the new album, agreed, "At the Lonely End of the Rink" is great. I really dig "Fly" and "Family Band", too. Downie's always got at least a couple gems on every record.
There’s Mistaken Point, Newfoundland There’s Moonbeam, Ontari-ari-o There are places I’ve never been and always wanted to go (that’s right)

I like the sound of that single - Doc, this said it perfectly for me: The Hip sounds absolutely like The Hip. I haven't been all that interested in their material in quite awhile now, but I appreciate that they're always just them. You'll never mistake them for anyone else. That's admirable. And Gord Downie is always about my favourite Canadian aside from Ian Blurton and Rick Mercer (and you guys, of course.) I think he's a great writer and a fascinating character, even if I'm not always in the mood for what he's selling. It may take me a while to pick this up, but I'll always love him.

tunes – you can absolutely understand how a band that’s been around as long as The Hip and whose stylistic range is debatably narrower than Neil Young's would fall prey to a "same old same old" feeling from fans. I think I admire them more than I did at their height, though. It's easy to do it when you're the toast of the town. But to stay engaged after that with as much or more drive as you had when you were at your height – and think, counting solo albums, World Container is the 6th record Downie's put out since 2000 (plus everything else he's doing...) all of it good work IMO – is something a lot more rare.

Good stuff, Riley. Letterman’s a fan; just listen to the way he intones the words 'Broken Social Scene'. A non-video link, but for anyone who’s at all curious about the Hali/Nova Scotia scene over the last few years, some cool stuff here: www.cokemachineglow.com/scenecast/no2halifax.html
