Broadband here Strat. Started with a cable modem, but switched to DSL when it became available. Had high speed access now for 2-3 years, and could never go back to dial-up.
(and I did take part in the poll)

I've had a cable modem since 1998 ... and wouldn't dream of being without one. There's just no comparison.

Have dealt with dialup for TOO long now... broadband has only really become the big thing down here in Australia over the last couple of years... only fairly recently has it come down in price for access...
And our telecommunications industry is unfortunately monopolised by Telstra, and limited by poor legislation anhd a small population... hence we have shittier services, more expense to get them, and VERY, very slow and arduously long waits for installation...
The only downside to living around here, really. We can be up to 2- 3 years behind the times in terms of technology.

I'm on DSL. Once upon a time in the distant past I was on dial-up, but I couldn't imagine what it would be like to have to do it that way now.

i'm still with dial up. fortunately, the dial up in sydney isn't that bad, and is pretty fast. even with downloads. i'm on a friend's computer with broadband at the moment, but there isn't much difference. the only difference i see is with downloading photos. which i do a lot of, and would be the only reason i'd get broadband. that and so i'm not tying up the phone line. i don't think anyone has called our house phone and gotten through since 1999.
i'm with aol. they switched to a national number and it's first attempt straight on, never get booted off and it's cheap. so it will be dial up for a while longer.

that being said, broadband here is pretty expensive and useless. the two major providers are our two phone companies. they're the only companies guaranteed not to go bankrupt for a while. (we've had heaps of providers go bankrupt and keep debiting your account) they're slow and useless and the customer service sucks. so i see no reason for me to switch to either one. in time i'll probably get another phone line.
altnernatively, i could always just move out of my parents house...but whatever.

Dial-up(and I joined the poll) for the 4-5 years I've been 'Internetted' and am DYING to go to DSL...
....but I've got the dial-up acct at home AND at the office and I'm writing it off tho the 13-something bucks a month is pretty much dirt....and it's still better than the 30-60 dollars that the DSL'll go for, besides having to provide something for the house while I write-off the office's DSL. So I dunno...I'm sort of at an impasse.
I don't download music(tho I do recall that in the Napster days wishing that I could, but FASTER....SO much available there and nowheres else!)basically through the horrible time involved to grab even one song...aaah, someday.

I'm on dial up, and will probably wait until I move in the near future to make the jump to broadband. Dial up is painfully slow here. I was kind of curious as to how many have dial up (for picture sizing and other considerations). Looks like about an even split so far.

Well, I see by the poll numbers that broadband is inching ahead of dialup here. Maybe I'm being cheap or stubborn, but I've just got too much on my plate right now to deal with changing it. I had really hoped my service would improve dramatically with the move to less congested phone lines, but it hasn't worked out that way - it's even worse in some ways (getting slower connection speeds, can't get on, etc.) I guess I can't blame the phone lines anymore. What burns my ass is that the ISPs (at least Earthlink) seem to be deliberately providing shitty dialup service in order to coerce people to switch to their broadband service. That really gripes my ass.

I'm on DSL, and when I go back to school, I'll be on cable, which is even faster. ;D

Glad you've got a good pipe going, Punky! I have a fat pipe at work, but I'm still limping on dialup at home. I normally just try to pop in and lurk (from work), then post from home. I make a mental note of all the clever things to say at many of the boards and then forget them all later, see?
