DSL at last! Ah - this is great! Faster than at work and doesn't tie up the phone line! Instant downloads! Wheeee!

This may be a timely post here.....I'm still on a dial-up mainly just due to the $19.99/mo. price that I'd been paying for it. Obviously would be nice for a bit more speed....I'm not an on-line gamer or anything but when I was doing more downloading of mp3's, man it sure would have been nice to grab things a helluva lot quicker.
My recent predicament is that I've moved in the past month and found that my old provider does not have a local number anymore so I'm searching for a new one. In the meantime I loaded up on AOL for a free trial and it SUCKS[/u][/b] to say the least. Seems ungodly slow and I've been knocked off several times and geeeee,,,,I Just Don't Like It.
Anybody have lines on perhaps a better provider.....I'm almost heading to wanting to go with a Verizon or Insight DSL.....cable can get crappy right if there's a lot of users on at the same time? I'm figuring that's the majority of the hassle that I'm having with AOL -- it's just too common of a carrier...

Amp, I've got DSL. My downstream speed is 1.5 - 3.0 Mbps, and the upstream speed is 384 - 512 Kbps. Not sure if that gives you any info you're looking for...

Been on cable here for about 3 weeks and IMO it's blowing the doors off of the DSL that we had at work (up to 4mg). Shit loads up so fast that I can't react quick enough...too used to plodding around but now there's NO way I could go backwards from it.
Have only downloaded a couple mp3's and late last night started to download Kaaza again....ended up stopping it. Not sure if I want to deal with all the AD shit....anybody have dope on some of the other free services like Limewire or whatever??

I'm not sure about your cable company Amp, but mine offers several different speeds. The one that I have is MUCH faster than dial-up, but not faster than DSL. The other two speeds, based on what they claim at least, are faster than DSL.

I think I got the slowest available cause that was the “special”. Its gotta be faster than dial up, its cheaper, and I get some cable stations. Life is good.

We just upgraded from 56K to DSL in the last month and it's been pretty cool, but our processor is so old and inadequate that even DSL is not as fast as it should/could be.

I use Road-Runner light with Time Warner Cable. I called a few months ago to cancel and go with a dial up for financial reasons and discovered that Time Warner has options. The option I chose was Road-Runner (beep-beep) light. Cost difference was from nearly 50 a month to 25. It's cable internet connection 4 to 5 times faster than dial up.

Has everybody got a firewall program or at least a good spyware killer to run semi daily? It only takes a couple of days of surfing to totally snafu your system and turn it into tortise-ware. It's just not an option or luxury anymore - a firewall is a must. There are some good free ones now, too.
DSL is great. But it changes your habits. You can get all your surfing done so much faster - you don't get to do all those things you used to do while the page loaded, like trim your nails, get a beer, go to the bathroom, etc.

Hi, Pat! Wow, that's cheap! I believe it runs closer to $40 around here for that.

Got a firewall, spyware protection, and adware protection here, as well as obviously keeping virus protection up to date. With an "always on" connection like broadband (DSL or cable), a firewall is a must. Don, have you looked at Kazaa Lite? I think it's supposed to be sans adware.

Got an awesome firewall system & spy block with this new gig. Lets you have instant listing of what tried to enter, auto deletes & lets you disinfect at will. No surprise my old puter died from disease. Its just mind blowing the amount of crap trying to get in within a 2 min period………… mind boggling!
