There's a lot of ripping off going on right now, but a lot of the bands doing it are at least ripping on cool bands. Loving the Bravery disc, but the opening track is "Blue Monday". Then there's an accoustic track on the new Idlewild that sounds like a Nickelback progression, but with good vocals and lyrics, so hopefully some of it is accidental. I saw The Bravery Sat. Night and the only thing they truely are ripping off is Morrissey's live stage presence,I can't count how many times my girlfriend turned to me and asked "Does he think he's Morrissey?"(POSING,Mic Clutching,Eyes to the sky) Blue Monday on the open yes,but after the open I disagree It could be worse it could sound like Orgy's Cover I can't believe they were Headlining with ASH on the bill as well for shame The album's good but the live show is full of energy and moping all at the same time Worst part it was an All Ages Show and that ment the doors open @ 6pm and the show was over by 9:30 that sucks what RNR show ends before at least 11pm I say all this and look foward to seeing the band most like the Smiths this Sat night (The Dears) Music Midtown may not be Coachella festival but our headliners for half the money($65) are just as strong for 3 days FRI- The White Stripes SAT- The Killers SUN- THE PIXIES!!!!!!(shhhh it's a secret)

I gotta tell you, you have to watch out for the hype on The Kaiser Chiefs and Bloc Party. I think both bands are just terrible. I haven't heard the new Mercury Rev yet, but I will. Definitely an underappreciated and underrated group. Kaiser Chiefs are a liitle weaker than most of these other "next big things"(kol, bloc party, bravery) I really look foward to hearing the entire Bloc Party album Mercury Rev are a fantastic band, they fall into that Afghan Whigs Catagory that if you know about them you really love and respect the music they make,if not you wouldn't know because college radio is the only support they get

Kaiser Chiefs are pretty terrible, Bloc Party pretty damn good. I'm seeing the latter in a couple of weeks -- been hearing mixed reviews of their live gigs. I heard about the Sum41/Coldplay thing but completely forgot to check. Not quite sure how I'll feel about searching for a sum41 track on slsk. Though I imagine I'll have to go no further than check Riley's hd for it.

I honestly don't know why but I don't get the Bloc Party thing. The Futureheads (that hounds of love cover is just brilliant and it's not even close to being one of the best tracks on the record) absolutely, but Bloc Party......I guess I'm just going to have to keep trying.
I will say this: I have been listening to LCD Soundsystem's "Losing My Edge" and I think that guy is going to get the award from me for the most brilliant song of this decade. The lyrics are genius, the song is great and it furthered my hatred for The Rapture. Note to The Rapture: take your universal advance money and just hand it over to DFA because your careers are only at their fingers.

I brought my copy of Aha Shake Heartbreak back to Best Buy for a refund after I found out that I wasn't going to be able to put it on my MP3 player. I mean, I only listen to music in my truck and when I run, and if I can't listen to the fucking thing when I run, I don't want it. I also refuse to pick up the new Mars Volta for this same reason, and I won't buy ANY CDs with that FBI warning shit on them, ever.
Unless they're only one penny, like that Bravery three track teaser thing I got. I really liked the radio single, and those three tracks weren't so bad, but FUCK does that stuff sound contrived, almost to the point of turn-off. And this is coming from someone who loves The Killers.

That copy protection stuff really sucks... partly why I am still thankful for my Mini Disc player, using the computer software I can still download copy protected tracks onto MDs... I wonder for how much longer though...

Can't you just press the 'shift' key when you put the cd to cancel the copy protection?

2005 Reviews In Short. Part 1 3 months in here's a couple sentences on each release I own Trail of The Dead- Worlds Apart (7) The best live band you probably haven't seen continues to challenge it's fans NO Source Tags/Codes,but hints at an even better record down the road. Standout- "Let It Dive" (the bic lighter anthem they had been missing) Bright Eyes- Digital Ash In A Digital Urn (6) The "NEW Dylan" plays with the toys inside his bedroom and makes better music than you and I if we tried the same thing. Standout-"Easy Lucky Free" M83- Before The Dawn Heals Us (8) The Best Producer who isn't named Kevin Shields forgoes his ambient masterpiece(Dead Cities,Ghosts & Red Seas) for the rock sdk to a Michael Mann flim (think Heat not ALI) Standout- "Lower Your Eyelids To Die With The Sun"(maarts wants to be buried to this,I think it's the best anthem since "Where The Streets Have No Name" so yeah you need to DOWNLOAD,BUY THIS ALBUM Bright Eyes- I'm Wide Awake It's Morning (9) Conor's best case for why teenage girls worship a skinny, shy young man,and when you resist his charm,he's already conveyed his limitations better than any young songwritter around. Standout- "Road To Joy" The Chemical Brothers-Push The Button (7) The Rave lives on the only mistep is the worst UK rap song("Left/Right") I have ever heard, but by the power of the mixer Ed and Tom Still Know How to spin a party record. Standout- "Hold Tight London" LCD Soundsystem- s/t (7) Disc 1 (6) Disc 2(9) James just put out Disc 2 and throw in a few new tracks(ie Bravery,Louis xiv) most people don't know anything about those singles until NOW you had a classic but instead we got b-sides and a couple new ones to bang(Daft Punk.Tribulations,Disco Infatrator) Standout- Disc 2 Kings of Leon- Aha Shake Heartbreak (7) No Longer the "Southern Strokes" more like a faster paced My Morning Jacket, but all the songs involve sex and drinking so maybe I'm wrong about them not being the Southern Strokes still? Standout- "King of The Rodeo"

I'm indeed very wrapped in M83's album. If any track isn't more like the equivalent of a warm shower than Lower Your Eyelids....or see myself slowly descent into a burning hell with that angelic song in the background...

2005 Early Recap Pt 2.
Doves- Some Cities (7) Take a little from lost souls, add the pop of Last broadcast and throw in more distorted vocals and this is what you get. not bad,but hurts my claim their one of the best bands around Standout- Sky Starts Falling
Tori Amos- The Beekeeper (6) It's not my favorite Tori album and I REALLY Enjoy how every girl I know stiil thinks it's one of her best. There are some strong arrangements but I haven't had the moment where I connect to the music yet. maybe by the end of the year I will feel different Standout- "Power of Orange Nickers"/(with Damien Rice)
The Mars Volta- Frances The Mute (10) THE BEST ALBUM SO FAR 78 min of a pure mindfuck, it's not for everyone with a story of murder, sex, addiction, and multiple personalties inside one's head all to find the link between legacy, purpose and family. Oh and OMAR is my new guitar god, while MV stake claim as the best ROCK MUSICAIN BAND since Led Zeppelin Standout- "Vismund Cygnus"(the ride begins?)
The Bravery- s/t (8) Sometimes you want more from an album The Bravery is not one of these sit. You get synth influnced rock from a lead singer who can't make up his mind if he wants to be in the Strokes or A Morrrissey impersonator and for nearly the entire duration you'll be convinced they could rule TRL and your local hipster bar Standout- "Give In"(all I want is Everything)
Kasier Chiefs- Employment (7) Part Franz Ferdinand more Bay City Rollers shouldn't this band be on Top of The Pops everynight? a really strong pop/rock record for you and yours that never completely takes off but doesn't drag at any point either and God I hope they get much more famous than JET Standout- "Saturday Night"
Daft Punk- Human After All (7) I trashed it when I heard it,but I'm starting to warm up to it,it's good not great now The robots dominate all the sound there's no "Digital Love" tracks it's all just very factory like and no real soul besides the voices screaming to get out of this record,Kraftwerk Lite Standout- "Television Rules The Nation"

2005 Early Recaps Part 3.....
QOTSA- Lullabies To Paralyze (8) The demise of QOTSA has been premature by the press this album's getting it's only fault is a couple "desert session experiments" but it still contains some fo the best lyrics of Josh Homme's career
Standout- "You Got A Killer Scene"(leading the sexiest rock song award nominees right now)
Beck- Guero (9) The mad genuis of such lame genere titles as "slacker rock","white boy cool" etc... continues the best Cal Ripken-JR like streak in music of making really great solo albums without making the same album twice and his worst album is still the first major label print as it should be("Mellow Gold") This is Beck for Dummies
Standout Track- Scarecrow
Bloc Party- Silent Alarm (9) The best debut album of the year and thank you for finally sharing this band (Vice Records) with the US. Go ahead talk about they sound like this band... blah blah much like TV on The Radio you can't deny they have a style and sound all their own
Standout Track- "This Modern Love" (this week)
Kasabian- (5) Do you like the Stone Roses low points on the 2nd album? Good you'll worship this hacked up collage of sound trust me all you need is the singles and the remixes are so much better than the whole album
Standout- "Reason Is Treason"
The Kills- No wow (8) Natural Born Killers come to life as a rock band with great songs about guns, blood, and cool-cool, some of the dirtiest production and hissing since your last sex tape you tried to make,it's as if Pj Harvey let her boyfriend sing backgorund while he stroked her back with guitars and the sexiest video of the decade doesn't hurt("The Good Ones")
Standout- "Rodeotown"
