What if we're making fun of the stuff after that? Like Gene's supertan in the eighties or the wigs? or remember when they went "metal" in the early ninties?

I am officially onside with this thread, as long as we only discuss Kiss matters up to and including Dynasty era Kiss. Maybe even as far as Creatures of The Night. Silly? Absolutely. Gimmick laden? No question. Super cool for the first 6 studio and 2 live releases? Fuck yeah. Fucking right 'Dog. Agree all the way with the last part of your post. Those bastards could really put on a show. Two of the best shows I was ever at were KISS shows in '77 and '78. Those guys could rawk!

Just for the record, In the 60's Townshend used to have roadies collect the peices of his smashed guitars and glue them back together. He'd switch during the mayhem that usually came at the end of an 'oo set and smash guitars that had already been smashed. Never heard that about Townshend before, but I'd say it's safe to say he had a rather low recovery/re-use ratio. It'd be hard to put a Rickenbacher back together - sort of like Humpty Dumpty. And smashing a Les Paul is no small feat in the first place - that's a pretty stout chunk of lumber! But he didn't always smash the stuff all to pieces, either. But nobody had been smashing guitars for awhile so it was kind of a retro thing when Kiss did it (some thought it was brand new!)

Lots of material there no question. Paul's opening high vocal part for "Heaven's On Fire" for instance is pure comedic brilliance.

Kiss put out a few pretty good albums early in their career (the first 6 studio albums and Kiss Alive, basically). I never saw them live, but I would imagine that their show was incredible and would have been impressive even if the music had been mediocre (as opposed to what it was: pretty good). I did see them on ABC's In Concert series several times, though I don't count that as "seeing them live"...still enough to give an impression of their show's potential...
Kiss is such a huge marketing machine these days (I mean, come on, how many other bands offer a CASKET emblazoned with their logo, fer cryin' out loud?), they don't even need to worry about record sales, what with all the other Kiss-crap on the market. And really, it's been like that almost from the beginning, from the Kiss comic book to the television show, Kiss Meet the Phantom of the Park (I THINK that was the name of it). Still, a few good riff-heavy rockers amongst the early material ("Black Diamond"& "Detroit Rock City" are a couple).

I've seen Kiss twice. The first time was on the Hot In The Shade tour in '89. It was awesome. They had a huge sphinx that shot lasers and even sang part of God Of Thunder. It was the last tour with Eric Carr who was a great drummer. They played well and put on a great show.
The second time was on the reunion tour, in 2000 I think. It sucked. I don't think most of, if any, of the band was actually playing. The show was bland, it was just big...but not cool. They were just a bunch old guys in spandex whorin' it up for cash. It was pathitic.

Damn straight we'll include Creatures Of The Night, Riley - ! For one, I just found it on vinyl the other day; it reminds me of my highschool days. Second, they still had their original makeup -- and Ace was on the album cover (but not in the band). And that's when I saw KISS live: their 10th Anniversary Tour; no one yet suspected they were going to lose the make-up directly afterward. So I got a chance to see them at the tail end of their "heyday". Saw em at Mud Island, outside Memphis, and THE PLASMATICS opened for 'em. (Yep: Wendy O' Williams & the Electric-taped nipples...) That KISS show was thunderous. Good stuff. The Plasmatics, while putting on a killer punk/metal dirty ass show themselves (as a matter of fact, I recall being a little worried for KISS after the Plasmatics finished their blistering set). But my concern was to no avail: for when the houselights went down and the announcer came on, KISS blew up the whole place with their thunderous opening, and all thoughts of the Plasmatics "stealing" the show away from them were dessicated as Gene, Paul, Vinnie and Eric showed everyone how it was done. Just a stellar set, louder than hell, pure rock'n'roll satisfaction.

Prince or Paul Stanley?, discuss... Prince = better musician Stanley = better rNr voice "Phantom of the Opera" w/o either in the lead role = priceless
